Instructions for 2 x 4 transom clamps.

The top bolt is for applyin pressure to the end of the clamp
The middle bolt is for applying pressure to the middle of the clamp.

You should get the clamp to within 1/4 of an inch clearance on the middle section and 1/2 inch clearance on the lower end and then slip it over the transom. Tighten the middle bolt snug then begin to tighten the upper bolt to tighten the lower end of the clamp snug. Alternate back and forth until you get the desired tightness. NOTE: I would highly recommend you have a helper to assisist with this clamping method and ratchet wrenches or drills with socket attachments. You do not have much time to get this done and the clamps are a bit bulky and unweildy to handle. Practice with them BEFORE you do the final glue up. I recommend 5 clamps.

What's the best way to seal the ends of the plywood? Just paint it with resin? And before the transom gets installed?

Yup..resin coat the crap outa it untill it doesnt drink anymore resin.

I would have everything sealed, precoated and prepped before you install your transom.

Not too bad at all actually. I've got lots of woodworking experience though. It took me about 2hrs to build the transom. I just have a sickness for rebuilding things, I've done lots of different things throughout my life, working with my hands is what I like.

Here is something I build straight from a log! I've been woodworking off and on since high school. Sorry for the non boat related.

Are you using Poly or Epoxy? If poly, I would coat both sides with poly AND a layer of 1.5 oz mat and another coat of poly PRIOR to install. I would Wrap the edges with the mat. If epoxy, then Two coats both sides and the edges, NO Mat needed.

Coat it.. seal it..prep it.. then go to town ( hope you have friends passin your glass and resin.. ).

Trans or stringer jobs for the first timers are going to be a Baiach..

even if you have help its still going to be hard enough.. think about poly res like baking.. you only have ONE chance...better make it good

I'm figuring to allow the transom to dry first before the install. It'll be much easier.

I'm pretty much a 1 man show, as is with most things I do. Maybe I can get the old man to come help when I glue in the transom.

I'm thinking to mix up about a gallon of PB for the install? That should be enough?

Got my transom halves glued together today, will fill the screw holes tomorrow and start glassing the transom tomorrow as well.

Got the transom coated with resin, let it get tacky, then put down a layer of matt on the inside of the transom, going to glue in the transom before I put a layer of matt on the other side. Had one spot where I couldn't get the matt to lay down around the corner, I think I didn't round the corner enough, I guess I'll have to grind down the parts that didn't stick down and put down another piece on its own.

Here is what I did today, glassed the transom. Only did the one side and the ends with matt, that'll be the glued side, I'll glass the other once its in.

Got my transom clamps made up today. Thanks to Woodonglass for the idea.

Dry fit is good, now I got it so all I got to do is tighten the lower nut and all is good.
