Re: 1964 Johnson Tri-Hull restore!

I ALWAYS recommend doing this. Drill oversized holes and fill with PB. Example. If you are needing a 1/4" hole drill a 3/4" hole, mix up some "HOT" PB (use a little extra catalyst so it will set up faster) and fill the hole. (or use some 5 minute Epoxy and thicken it the same way) When it hardens, Drill the 1/4" hole. that way you NEVER have to worry about water intrustion into the transom. If you don't want to do that, then use 3M 4200 and coat the heck out of the hole and the screw/bolt when you install it.

Thanks! That sounds like a great idea!

Another question. How many layers do I need on my deck? Is just 2 layers of CSM ok? Or should I do a layer of CSM, then a layer of woven, then 1 last layer of CSM?

1/2" With not allot of support, I'm going to be relying on the foam allot to support the deck. It is the way it was designed unfortunately.

Also can I go right over woven with CSM without sanding it smooth? Woven kinda leaves a bumpy finish.

If you have the resin to spare then I'd go ahead and use the roven. I'd give it a light sanding with 60 grit to knock down any high spots befor the last layer of 1.5oz. You will still have some bleed thru of the roven pattern but not to bad. What are you covering the deck with?

thanks. Well, I think I'll need to get another pail of resin then, I don't think I'll have enough to do 3 layers. Unfortunately they don't offer something in-between sizes, its either 20L or 4L, pretty stupid, and it way more economical to get the 20L pail, but then that'll leave me with a bunch leftover!! Maybe I can sell it? I don't care if I see the pattern a bit. I am just painting the floor with ????? Not sure yet, some kind of anti-skid.

Ok, you Could use 1.5oz and do 3 layers. Do the first and see how much resin it takes and go from there. But I really think you're gunna need more so get 5 gals and use the roven then you won't have to worry.

Ya, that's what I was thinking, I think your right. I'm trying to keep as much wieght out of the boat as I can, but I gotta do what I gotta do. Its already way more skookum then factory.

Yup, that's why I decided to rip the boat apart this winter and inspect it, I had suspected it was rotten. So, if I gotta spend another $150 on resin, then so be it. Its going to be so much nicer this year I can't wait!

Next winter I think I'll paint the boat!! Thinking of seeing if I can get it plastic media blasted to strip all the crappy paint off of it.

Got the foam done this morning!!!!!!! WHOO HOOOO, a guy that works with my dad came over and helped me, he drilled the holes and vent holes, I poured part A and part B into small mixing cups and then dumped them into a bigger cut for him, he mixed and then poured, went very well, made a huge difference in how firm the deck is, I can now walk on it with no flex at all!! Now just have to mix up some PB and fill the holes, then start glassing the deck in!

Thanks! I just got done sanding the deck down, got all the foam crap sanded off, got all the holes prepped for PB, finished grinding the Hull for tabing, just a tiny bit of PB work and on to glassing the deck in!

Thanks for being so much help Wood through all of this! I'm sure there are a bunch of people following along this build, but not many posting, oh well no worries!

Hi parris I am almost at your stage I am waiting for my gas tank to get retro fitted.
I am taking a week of vaca. to solely work on the boat and hopefully have it close to being ready to put on the water.
I am waiting to paint in the winter also I wanna get on the lake....

Hey Wood, I'm having a thought here. Seeing as most of the strength comes from the tabing, what if I do a tab in CSM, then woven then CSM, then just 2 layers of CSM on the deck itself, I'm thinking that will give it really good strength and save me on a bit of resin.

Sure we're watching, but there's no need to "chime in" because you guys are doing great! I'm looking forward to seeing the splash myself and those seats you got look just like the ones I got for my boat, but I went with all Navy. Deck and the transom look awesome. Now get this thing glassed and painted (or whatever you're putting in for a sole) and drop that OB on the back. Oh, and to rub it in, we didn't get any snow this year (snicker)....
