Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

Hey Everyone,

I have a quick question.

Would something like this work for screwing the deck to the stringers?

http://www.homedepot.com/Deck-Mate/h_d1/N-25ecodZ5yc1vZfk/R-100348705/h_d2/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&keyword=deck+screw&storeId=10051

Or would something like this be better?

http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/Wood-Screw-2DV28?Pid=search

I plan on putting a large bead of PL Premium on the stringer, then after I drill the pilot holes, I'll fill them with 3M 4200 just before running the screw in.

I am open to any suggestions or tips.

Thanks in advance

Yep use em all the time! I just use resin to coat them and the holes.

Moving forward this weekend.

I used some of this stuff I had to add the second layer of foam on top of the pieces on each side of the center stringer:

Seemed to work pretty good. The bottom pieces are notched to go around the hull stiffeners.

I also got the undersides of the deck pre-soaked and then a layer of csm on it them. Just have to trim the excess on one of them:

Finally got the bilge box PB'd in:

That's it for now.

I hope everyone had a great weekend?! It was beautiful in the northeast!

I finished the flotation foam and got the deck screwed down:

I put in one of the old lounge seats to check alignment and height:

After pre-drilling the deck screw holes, I filled them up with 3M 4200 and ran the screws in tight about every 6 inches.

Also, I started filling the gap between the deck and hull with PL Premium:

Hopefully everyone is well and moving along on their projects. For those of you that have finished, I hope you are enjoying all the hard work you put in :)

Thanks for following my journey.

Just curious why you chose to fill the deck gap with PL instead of PB? Make sure the PL cures a minimum of 72 hours before you tab the deck to the hull. The PL will continue to Out Gas for at least that long. And while it is, you cannot lay glass over the top of it.

I already had 4 tubes sitting around I wanted to use.

I'm looking at probably another 2 weeks before I can start glassing in the deck in anyway.

Made a visit to Tractor Supply Co. tonight :)

The TSC near me is dropping the Valspar paint for something else so the primer, paint and hardener was all 25% off. :D

Hi Everyone,

Well life has been really hectic lately and progress has been slow on the boat.

I did get the deck glassed in a few weeks back and yesterday got the bow eye backer PB'd into place.

Due to the busy nature, I have not gotten any pics taken of the progress. I hope at some point soon I can get some and update the thread.

I have also come to the realization that she will be finished when she is finished as I was hoping to have her in the water over a month ago.... Oh well. When she is done it will be worth it. :)

I hope everyone is making good progress on their projects and those of you that have splashed.... ENJOY! :)

Got the deck painted tonight:

I ended up going out back last night and got some sand. I then did a sifting with a kitchen flour sifter to sift out the small pieces from the larger ones. I then used a piece of screen to sift out the larger sand grains from the medium sized ones. The medium sized ones were perfect for the grip texture on the deck.

I put down a coat of Glidden Porch and Floor paint in Steel Grey.
Then sprinkled down the sand. About an hour later I rolled on another coat of paint.

This seemed to work pretty good so we'll see how it does. I will probably put down a third and final coat.

Hope everyone is doing well :)

Very Nice!! I think you will need the 3rd coat and possibly a 4th.

Flipped the boat today:

The keel is a little scrapped up but not bad:

IMAG0751Custom.jpg

I used some interlux 202 solvent on the hull today and sanded the keel (after the pics were taken), nicks and gouges and will use some 3m premium filler to fill in these spots and throw a few layers of csm and 1708 over it for little more thickness.

Also got all the brackets off the trailer so I can the the wire wheel to them, sandblast them and prime and paint them. This will also help to better sand the trailer down for primer and paint:

Also found the serial/model number tag:

I am hoping to get the keel and stuff done tomorrow but we'll have to see what the honey-do list entails :)

Worked on the keel on Sunday as well as sanding and filling any gouges with 3M premium filler:

I need to get some more of the 3M filler. Planning on doing that late tomorrow afternoon.

Re: 1968 Glassmaster Runabout

Sprayed on the first coat of primer today.

Here is what I did:

1. I had already washed the hull with Interlux 202 solvent last weekend.
2. I then sanded the hull with 100 grit sandpaper on the palm sander.
3. I then blew off the hull with the air compressor.
4. Then washed down the hull with acetone.

Next I used Woods primer/paint formula. I mixed 2 cups of the Valspar grey primer (tractor and Implement) with 1/3 cup acetone and 1/3cup mineral spirits. I just check on the drying and here's what it looks like:

Any suggestions as to what happened :(

Wow...Some kind of contamination, incompatibility. gunna have to sand it off!!! Next try, just use acetone. Mix One cup of the primer and thin with 1/3 cup of acetone only. Make sure your volume setting is set low so you're not putting out to much paint. Just enough to get a light covering.

fstorm, I just got caught up with your thread. Glad to see you're back at it strong as you're making great progress. I'm of zero help on the paint, well on any of it for that matter, but I can give encouragement and kudos with the best of them. So.....kudos! See, I told you.
