Man Im having a hard time aligning my engine. I think I finally have it right thought. The alignment tool goes in like butter. But the grease marks show the front of the engine may be leaning towards the right or for you seafaries starboard. Will post some pics soon, just taking a sandwich break.

After the engine alignment I went ahead and cut wiring cable for the dash. I also tried to install my fuse box.

say Azlo,
could you actually make this an open bow with a walk-thru winsheild?I had a chance to buy this model of boat but let it pass because it was closed bow,I wonder if it would ride well in the water or if it would make a difference.I guess I'm afraid to make too many modifications because of how it will plane out and track

Snake, they are the exact same hull. Check out my thread and you'll see how simple the consoles would be to fabricate.

Azlo,

I have really enjoyed reading your thread. Thanks for all the outstanding pics and play by play. I think I have learned a lot just from your project. I have 1972 starcraft nova 18' that I just got last week. It has been sitting in a pole barn for five years, so it will need some TLC.

Again, very nice work.

I agree with EZ. Center console, open Bow and even cabins have the same hull (correct if Im wrong). I love these boats they are so versatile. As a matter of fact that was my plan, to make mine an open bow. But i just moved the dash forward a foot. I like this look.

Thanks man, im just returning the favor that others before have done. I mean its a dam good circle, you post your project, get help, get criticised and you learn and others learn from your discoveries. This thing keeps evolving. Now Its your turn captainnate. Time to get the camera, tools out and most of all CASH. The journey is well worth it. Congratulations on your new project. BTW, nova is a rare one.

Oh,I thought it looked small in the bow, this is how alot of PNW boats are.Leaves more room in the back for fighting salmon and sturgon.I cant wait untill you get it in the water,I want to know how it handles.Do you know what the beam is on your boat?I've looked at some of the new ones and they are quite wide.
Thanks

Mine reads at 75" or 6 ft. Not really that wide snake. But yeah that was reason for me moving the dash forward. I need all the space to battle fish.

SO I redid my dash had to cut some extras for my switches and levers and also used a diffrent curve on top of the dash. I minus well make a unique shape.

and my non insulated terminals for my wiring.

Now for the wiring itself.

Im using cables composed of 4 wires. Cut shrink tubes and slid on the wires.

MAH009601.jpg

Slid some spade terminals and soldered them

MAH009603.jpg

Used a heat gun to shrink the tubes.

MAH009606.jpg

and walaah.

MAH0096014.jpg

also used label maker to label wires.

Neat stuff.

Great progress Azlo. You are going to want to crimp those connection before you solder them. Better to do it with a good set of ratcheting crimpers. Solder alone in a high vibration application can lead to a bad joint with intermittent issues. They can be hell to troubleshoot. I know you already sealed them up but it could save you a lot of headache in the future.

I myself pass on soldered. Most aircraft will not allow it so I dont think it is great to do. I mean if a joint fails on a plane you learn to fly or die. A boat you might have to learn to swim. I can swim faster than I can fly, without a machine helping me.

look at this PDF. Otherwise looks great.

Hey Az,

What are you using to house the 4 wires in ? I see the black hose/cable/wire loom ? What exactly are you using ?

Nevermind, i see you bought the cable as four wire cable.

Also, why non insulated terminals ?

Also did you go with marine grade wire ?

Great info in that PDF.

See, i saw nothing about any 'negative' aspects of soldering. Only how great it is to use a certain terminal. It's almost an advertisement for those terminals he was speaking of. No comparison of any kind on crimp vs solder. Just that the aircraft industry doesn't use solder.

Keep up the great work Az, i plan to do similar to what your doing. In comparison to what 'was', what your doing is a huge upgrade.

There is no shortage of information explaining why a crimp is a much better connection that a solder connection especially in an environment where there is vibration. Google it if you don't believe it. There is a reason all automotive and aviation connectors are crimped and not soldered.
