Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

Well i figured that was going to be a signature sound, but I had to convince the ol'lady of that. Ahhh the muff thing, yeah I know but, wanted to get some of the oil moving in the engine. Also makeing d*$@ sure that the oild pump is not clogged or carped out.
But i'm happy how it sounds.:D Hey nice footage there, by the way, I hope mine sounds that good on the water. :p Gotta replace the ex. manifold gasket, seen some drippage there. Nothing major but going to fix before it becomes major:eek: Cant wait to enjoy it, 3 weeks and counting going on my 10 day camping/ boating trip on the ohio river up here. Then about sept or oct. going to tear it down.

Changing out the exhaust mani gasket is a good idea, but you may want to torque them down and see if that helps first.
I changed mine (and blocking plate at the back of the mani) and leaked a bit, even though I thought I had them buttoned down, had to get on them just a 1/4 turn more and no leaks.

hmmm, I'll give that a try first. Checked up on the price of it, its only like 13 dollars and some change. THe gasket edges that are exposed look very rough, (well the ones that still have gaskets edes left at all)

Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

Been a long week, didnt get anything done on the boat like i wanted. Got 2 weeks untill the family goes on vacation.
Decided to go on and pull the lower unit to inspect the impeller. Cant find my allen wrench set:mad:(must be on my work van). All well i need 2 sets anyway, guess i'll go get another set tomorrow:rolleyes:

I think Napa is becoming my marine parts place( I can say that name can't I??)called them today and they can order a impeller kit for me. The prices are comparable to what i see online. Plus I get it in a couple of days. Sometimes dont trust buy online, and needing the part in a pinch:D

:facepalm:Oh yeah gotta buy a bigger flathead screwdriver also, so i can pull my drain plugs in the outdrive, gotta to clean the gas tank, etc, etc, . OH yeah to top it off, a friend of mine asked me if i can replumb his mobile home before i go on vacation:eek:
I need a cloning machine lol lol

Took the lower unit off about 10 minutes ago. Now I know why it didnt seem like i was moving enough water that day i had it running. 2 blades on the impeller are gone, and the remaining blades are dry rotted.
Now the scary part, a piece of metal fell out of the upper drive when I seperated the sections. I had the boat in gear and running prior to today, in foward and reverse. Going to check it out with a light
 Now that i given my wife a heart attack about the metal, she asked if its in the exhaust chamber?? I said yes and then she just looked at me and waited for me to get it.
Oh yeah that might just years of buildup, cant see any damage up in the upper unit:facepalm:
Shes been around boats longer then i have :D

TTTC - It is probably the exhaust shutter. They rust and and fall down and rest on the lower unit. I changed the impeller in mine and found the same thing. After I found it I didn't chop the throttle to slow down, just reduced power. Never got water up the exhaust and didn't fix it. Just told the new owner about it.

Did you find all the pieces of the impeller? The pieces could block some cooling passages upstream from the pump.

Exactly what I was thinking. May want to run a hose from your Tstat backwards, and from the rear of the riser towards the Tstat to see if you can backflush anything out.

Nope didnt find any pieces of the impeller yet. I figured on flushing it out backwards from the t-stat and on down thru the exhaust.\
Hmmm didnt think about my exhaust shutter, along as i get about 2 weeks worth of leisure time with it this summer thats all i'm worried about. I snap some picyures of the upper tomorrow and post them up for a mechanical opinion:D

Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

I didn't replace my shutter cause an engine removal is needed or it helps to pull the engine. I just watched how I slowed down. Not perfect but it worked. Somewhere in here I think I read that shutters aren't used on the new M/Cs, but I really don't know where or if I was dreaming. Those shutters don't seem to last all that long.

Do you have a pic of the chunk you found when you dropped the L/U? I didn't see it in the pics you posted above.

PS - Love those Holidays

Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

Alright, maidian voyage tomorrow. Wish us(family) luck:D
checked out the gas tank tonite, its trashed, so dug out some of my old outboard tanks. Will run on them for the trip.
Let the boat run tonite for about a hour idling on muffs, temp just reached the yellow, green line. Man I can tell a diffference in water flow with the new impeller on there.:D

Im soooooo excited, but nothing to fast this time just putt out to the island relax, and
dream of what it will be like next year, restored pullin the kids in a tube.:)

Oh man, been lookin at you tube vids of big hp jet boats.......... almost convinced the wife to let me look at them after the hoilday is done.:D Along as she takes out a insurance policy on me lol:eek:

Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

Well it survived,

Got a couple of issues that i will have to resolve before it goes out again :facepalm
1. gota slight leak in the hull:eek:
2. bilage pump doesnt work(i hate buckets now)
3. there is a water issue in the oil, but i think that is from the intake of water into the hull:facepalm:
Before anyone says anything. i know i should've replaced the pump before hand, but hey, i trusted the po:rolleyes:
Other then that the engine ran great, only opened up once, she topped out at about 2700 rpm, i know that cant be right.
some kinda of cap popped of the outdrive. A sliver one, about the size of a quarter, gotta love duct tape.:D
now i guess i will start the restro in sept, want to have it ready to go next spring.:D

Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

Sounds like you had a good maiden run, TTTC. And you started the checklist for winter. The 2700 rpm is low, but heck the carb probably needs a re-build, plugs, etc.. Normal maintenance. Hope the water/oil issue isn't serious. I can't place the cap you mentioned. Where is it on the outdrive?

PS went back in your thread, scratch the carb re-build. Miissed that earlier.
