Hey T3C - Don't forget about those wonderful glass donors for re-powering the Holiday. Find a cheap one with a trashed hull, yank the drive train, strip the good stuff and junk what's left. You might even make some extra cash off of it.

Yup ^^^.

The great thing about going this route is that you have everything all there, all the little pieces and parts that really could add up otherwise. Plus, the 3.0 Alpha combo is a super common driveline so it should be pretty easy to find.

Cheers man:)

Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

I did find a orignal mer control like what was in my starcraft in good condition for 40 bucks, going to get that. The alternative is a 800 doller one that wife found and almost insists that it gets put in the boat:eek:

Missed this the first time. If the wife is willing to spend $800 for a control, surely you can convince her to put way less up for a glass donor. Then you can demonstrate the thrill of reducing the glass to garbage can sized chunks. Heck she might even take over and do some chopping. :D

Well, I think I made up my mind on the repower. Found a complete bottom end kit for 4 to 5 hundred, and a buddy of mine at work knows a guy who will rebuild my head for probarly 50 to 100 dollars. Just hate to change the engine because its original to the boat.(i'm kinda funny that way), and other then having the block inspected and cylinders honed or maybe bored out. I can reassemble the engine myself. Leave some money for the outdrive and other small upgrades i plan on doing. gotta a break in the weather, thinking about going on and get everything ready to yank out the motor. as soon as i start that i get some pics posted up:D. I know most of the readers are dieing to see some tear down progress.... so am i

Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

Okay got a question, I havent reserached this yet, but the wife suggested that i use spray on bedliner material instead of gluv-it for the seams in the bottom when i tear out the floor. I dont think that would work because its purpose is to protect truck beds from scratches and wear, n tear, not to seal and waterproof. Any thoughts on this before i waste the time to reserach this idea even though i think i know the answer.

I know it's been talked about many times around here. I do believe the consensus is to stick with the Gluvit:)

thanks jas, yeah thats what i thought, but i got to keep the admiral happy:D Oh yeah i think im goign to have good weather next weekend, so i have some pics up. Going to pull the outdrive and get it in the basement. Come with this idea of sliding my boat on to a cradle on th ground to make the engine removal easy on me. Dont have anything tall enough to go overhead(no garage) so i thought, just lower the boat to where i can work on it. That should be interesting, will post pics of that process.:D

Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

Okay, well spring is here and guess what, the starcraft is now offically a 2 year project. Yes, yes i will here it from everyone" i told you so". Some family issues came up (that were in my favor) and so my life has become very busy again. Now that i have decided on taking my time, the rebuilt will be done right. Didnt want to half***** it like the wife suggested to get out on the water this year. But see that is only the begining. If you all have noticed at the bottom of my postings, my 22' deck boat that i sold. Well it was sold to my mother-in-law's husband. Boat is still in my driveway, in fact its stripped down in my driveway. :D He bought a rebuit mercusier v-8 to put in it. He is a union painter and in texas working. So now his stepson and I get to finish putting it back together so the family can use it this year. So my attention will shift to this one for a while. then back to the starcraft later on.

Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

Okay folks, been kicking some ideas around with the Starcraft again. By the way before anyone says it, I'm not gutting out my glassers for the parts just going to be upgrading it while working on the Starcraft.:friendly_wink:

Here's my ideas, I'm taking the belly tank out of my four winns to put in a bigger tank when I start the other mods. I was thinking about using the 29 gal belly tank in my holiday. The weight shouldn't be a big factor, plus with the engine I'm going to do,it won't matter. If I center it in my keel, then the balance shouldn't change. I would like to have more running range then the stock size tank. What's is you all thoughts on that.

Also been looking at the floor material again. I'm convinced that I'm going to use the 1/2 sheet plastic (hdpe) is better then the wood, because it will never rot, it's pre-colored. Once I install it I will never have to worry about replacing it again. The cost is high but I think worth it. I would like this boat to last me thru my kids teen years before I would have think about work on it again. Going to start some tear down this weekend, I will post pics of the floor condition.

Well now I'm getting somewhere. Long day on her but it was worth it.
Starting floor tear out
image.jpg

Floor torn out, now got to clean with vacuum
image.jpg

Vacuumed the debris out, will pressure wash the inside tomorrow
image.jpg

Got a ton of parts now to redo and repaint. Still deciding on color for the hull, well the scheme anyway. Going to go with a sand color interior. Yanked my outdrive off, noticed a lot of rust inside the housing, and some funny looking weld beads around the gimbal bearing area. Not sure what's that about. Will take a better pic of it with some light tomorrow. Gotta get my gluvit ordered and the motor pulled, but well on the way now.

Going to pull by belly tank out of the four winns and see what it looks like in the Starcraft. Will take a pic for you all to give any input.

Pic of parts, lol kinda trashed the side yard today

Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

Hey, I bet those glassers have some great parts in em!:becky:

Great to see you in action again:thumb:

Yes they do, since one is in my driveway, but I'm just robbing the parts that I'm going to replace anyway. My glasses will be back on the water someday too.

Has anyone tired putting a belly tank in the starcrafts before as a retro design pose to the original fuel tank location? Just curious, wasnt sure how would affect the weight distribution. Forgot how much space is under the floor when you tear them out.

Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

The 18 footers won't have a ton of room under there, you'd have to find a pretty thin tank to make it work but it's dooable eh!;)

Hi 3T, Just curious as to why you removed the top decks and gunnels. That's a lot of additional work. I think you may need them in place to stiffen the hull before you replace the floor or other structures. - Grandad

Yep, found out the hard way. Okay, so removed the tank from my glasser and cleaned it some.
image.jpg

Hauled it inside the hull and checked,( no I don't know what a tape measure is,lol). Guess what, it's too tall:Cry:

Plan b is check measurements and order a true belly tank.

Started playing with pressure washer, had to clean out all the ribs with a flat piece of metal just like Azlo did on his.
image.jpg
There is some back tar looking stuff all over the bottom. Some of it came out, some didnt. Besides that, there is glue all over the nose and the sides from the carpet. What is a good cleaner for wiping that junk off?
image.jpg

Going to pull the engine this afternoon I guess, found me a good tree branch that I can back the boat up to. No garage this shade tree mechanic yet.

Well, I am going to refinish all of the surfaces in the boat. Decks, gunnels and everything. Maybe I was premature but it did aid in getting the floor out easier. I guess I will have to reinstall them temporary when I put the new floor and framing in. We will see, this is all a learning experience for me, so all tips, concerns, and options welcomed. That's why I'm here

Been researching below deck fuel tanks, going to have to go custom made to get one that fits. Just want something bigger then a 12 gal. But don't want the weight sitting on one side either. I figure it will cost the same amount of money either way so....

Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

Spent awhile researching on at custom fuel tank builders websites. Took some painful searching but I think I got down to two builders. One site will give me a quote via email. The other one had a estimated price and gal cap according to your dimensions and tank style. I going witha belly tank( 3 sided bottom) 4.5 tall, 24 inches wide, 48 long. Will give me approx. 22 gal cap and I would mount the tank right in front of the motor in the floor of course. Looking at about 350 bucks plus shipping. Not bad considering what the plastic tanks run.
