Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

Okay, so I went on the merc I/0 thread and asked around about my 120 merc. Well I have been on the fence about rebuilding it or not. What kind of major engine work to do, boring, honing, etc, etc. They answered my quesions about performave gains, which is little to none:facepalm:already question my outdrive since I flooded the shift cable area with water when the freeze plug popped out on the water. There was evidence of water up around my driveshaft when I pulled it. Well I can take the same money, and do something better.

It's decided then I'm going follow in the footsteps of the great glasser destroyer(jasoutside). Going to hunt around and buy another boat to get the 3.0 merc and a alpha one drive. Figured I have a year or so maybe. Now he's a question, the alpha one, its cutout will be different then my pre-alpha that I currently have, correct? Or will my gimbal housing still work with the alpha one( which would be just awesome at this point.) Maybe I will find Baby Thumper out there somewhere with a nice 3.o

The good news there is you'll find wayyyyyyyy more 3.0 rotted glassers out there than V6/V8 versions. I think them picken should be pretty good for ya.

T3C - I take that as a big :thumb: from the Great Glass Destroyer. :) In total agreement - CL searches show up more 3.0 donors than anything. Good luck lookin'.

Well, I will have some new pics up tomorrow:bounce: going to pull the engine with the help of a maple tree and my crackshot mechanic team:glee: they work for food and a roof over their head, and of course a ride in the girl when she's done:laugh:

Then she gets untrailered...... For the next adventure

I love my new avatar. Anyone ever seen the episode of top gear with the Toyota turned into a boat???

Anyway, sadly I'm reporting tonight:grumpy: Not much done today. Yard duties took top of my list, haven't mowed all spring.
Then my boss called, hey I got 2 service calls for ya. :faint2: Sooooooooo. This is all I got done today:

Nice setting sun

My engine pulling tree

Got the ladder out and set my com-a-long and chain for the morning duties

But hey my yard looks great, and two people have heat tonight:D

Okay so I'm going to start the paint scheme conversation for the fun of it. Originally the wife and I had discussed bone and yellow. Bone or beige interior, then a bone colored hull with a yellow stripe. That was 2 years ago, fast forward to the present. Now that the wife is a soon to be ex, I'm kinda not sure. I liked the yellow, but don't want a whole boat yellow. Pure white shows too much dirt, as I will be in the Ohio river most of my time with her. A yellow stripe yes, kinda like this picture but imagine that blue stripe yellow, and the white some type of off white. Any thoughts fellas?

The boat you pictured was the inspiration for my paint scheme.

I also like yellow a lot.

Here's a few more ideas, I do the like that yellow

I love that black stripe thrown in there, hmmmmmm

Now this has the yellow broke up. That would test my masking skills, and my skill of free handing the shape with masking tape

Anything similar to the 2nd of those ^^^ & the lower rubrail's gonna have to come off too look 'right':
attachment.php

I'll just leave that ^^^ here, Jas or Gibbles will be along shortly to show off their mad graphic design skills.........

Is this too little yellow &/or too much of an older style:

Those last 2 pix are of smooth sided glassers, so the 1st will probably translate better to a lapstrake hull, IMHO:

And be MUCH easier to mask off...... Just follow the lapstrakes :)

Well JB, you just gave me more to think about.......

I like that pic you found, just a little more yellow perhaps. But yes that lower rub rail will not be left on for the finished product.
I know that I'm going to paint the I/o yellow also. And the engine, perhaps some bling in there too, chromed plated valve cover anyone? I know that's a custom job. May a merc cat, lol. I have. Interesting picture in my mind

I'm not so much a yellow guy myself, but then again, she's yur boat so there's that.

First things first though...

Have you picked out your brand of paint yet?

Why?

Well if your going Rusto, than your colors are pretty limited.

If your going to actually spend some money on paint than the whole rainbow of colors are at yur disposal eh!:thumb:

Well, yeah I probably will spend some money on paint, considering I have time. Probably will experiment on my trailer first.:friendly_wink: Never know i might get good at this part. I remember back in my teenage years, my buddy and I rattled can a truck of mine. It was shiny when we were done, considering we used engine paint:facepalm:Lots of sanding. We will see:whistle:

UraGlow.

I think Jas will reject it as a choice, based solely on:
* can be used on fiberglass, aluminum, steel and wood

* it's like wrapping your yacht in glass!

I think it was Bwanna Don who mentioned Ace Hardware's brand of rust stop paint is re-badged Rustoleum, and that Ace will tint or modify tint of their product when you buy it.

Jas: Isn't 1 of your top non-cost reasons for choosing off the shelf Rusto, is the ability to quickly & easily get off the shelf paint for touchups later? Possibly even in a rattle can?

I suspect that most paints will change colors slightly over time (fade? IDK, maybe), even in a resealed can (unless you nitrogen fill the now less then full can, to remove oxygen). So if there's any chance of a slight mis-match down the road & later, esp when from the original resealed can, or a 'new, improved & reformulated' Rustoleum off the shelf color, I wouldn't let not off the shelf stop my paint color choices.

The Uraglow reads like a good product & choice for aluminum, but wasn't/isn't Easypoxy? I don't think Ez will ever be referencing & referring anyone to it.

Best of luck navigating somewhat uncharted territory TTT w/ Uraglow. If you do decide to use it or another non-typical choice in paint, please keep us up to date on it's details & how it goes. Someone has to be 1st ;)....

Re: 1968 starcraft hoilday 18 i/o 120

Okay so here's todays progress:

Thought I would throw in a pic of her hooked behind my tow Vehicle.
image.jpg

Engine coming out, now were getting somewhere
image.jpg

Pics of the crackshot mechanic team:D

image.jpg

Transom assembly removed
image.jpg

The entire bottom of my transom is worm dirt, Scares me to think I had it out 2 years ago
image.jpg

Now it's thinking time. I got a alpha one sitting in my other boat. Had a 4.3 bolted up to it. I know the gea ratio is wrong, so new upper and lower. I can find those all day long, just not a complete assembly. I debating to use the gimbal housing from my alpha, the inner that I just took off and then purchase a used upper and lower. Trying to use what I got and spend less money. Going to sell both out drives and engine to raise some funding for the Starcraft. But is what I'm thinking about doing even a mate or am I just spinning my heels here. V-6 and v-8 donors are over cl down here by me, but the merc 3.0 is hard to come my intact that's cheap. 1500 to 2000 is what I have seen so far:faint2: that's just not even a option at this point. Just think out loud or at least at finger tips

Oh yeah, going to have to redo my bunks on my trailer and add a set lower toward the keel. All the weight is riding on the busted rollers
image.jpg

Notice the gap with no weight in her, didnt realize how much she was on the keel.

Hmmmmm, let me think? Uh no. Tha beat the Carp out of the boat at wot. Nah going to stick with the 4 but I am going to experiment and see if I can get my drive to bolt up. I'm a poor busted boat builder here.
