Re: 1971 Winner Bimini 17' Tri Hull

Boy, that brings back nightmares!!
:D :D

I'm going to make up a rack (on casters) next weekend for the boat so I can move it around the driveway or into the garage (if needed).

Once I get it on the new rack, the next order of business is to pop off the cap.

Progress is a little slow but I'm not in too big of rush at this point. :)

Just wondering;is it important to support the outside edges of the hull,to maintain the exact level of the deck??If not, will it "spread"open a tad?The way you have your rack built is pretty close to the way boat sits on the trailer,support/wise.I am replacing the deck on a tri/hull myself and have been concerned if I should build such a support, rather than proceeding job while it's on the trailer.Being new to this stuff,I question my decisions alot lately.

I'm not sure if it's needed this way but the rack supports it better than what I had it on (cinder blocks / wood blocks).

I do not have a trailer at this time and wanted to support it as best I could before I pop the cap off. :)

Someone that is more knowledgeable than I on this could probably give you a better answer.

I did my whole job on the trailer. I didn't notice any problems.

I too did mine on the trailer. The only thing I did do was put a strap around the middle of the hull when I started laying in the stringers and deck. I had no known issues.

From what I rememeber seeing somewhere on here. The auto grade bondo is NOT waterproof and has no place on a boat. I am alot like you and new to fiberglass work so this is just what I seen on here and just trying to pass along anything I learn.

I also have a Winner project going on at the moment. It looks alot like yours just a closed bow 1972 19ft v hull. I was just going to put my cap back on and redrill new holes for new rivets and pay no attention to the old holes but thats just me. (might not be what is the propper way)

That is what I used to fill the gaps in the ply wood on the sides of my boat. Bondo is not waterproof if you look on the can that should be. I did not care as I used 1708 and resin on top of that. Where people mix up the peanut butter I just used that. 2 years on the lake and no issues. That stuff has been in the bed side of a 64 ford truck I have for 15 years and still holding strong.

Just an loooong running joke with my wife (the admiral) ;):D:)

I may be the captain but she's the admiral so I get overruled on a regular basis. :p

Re: 1971 Winner Bimini 17' Tri Hull

Well I'm almost done with the bathroom remodel. I'll finish it up tonight and should be able to work on the boat a bit on Sunday. I will not be upset if I never have to do another one again but I'm sure it will not be :)

Tomorrow is the last cruise on Mom and Dad's boat before they take it out of the water on Monday. Going to leaf peep on Winnipesaukee.

I'll update once more work has been done.

I do have a word of wisdom for you, on mine, I used 3/4" & 1/2" marine grade plywood for the transom. I put the 1/2" all the way to the top, and the 3/4" up to the edge where the motor hangs. What I would change is, to run the 3/4" all the way up also. Also, the thickener that you have will work great for bedding the transom. Slather it on all the way around for a good watertight seal...especially across the bottom.

Hi All,

Well not a lot going on lately. Been busy with work, house and holiday stuff.

Got a little more of the old glass off and just started the grinding a bit.

That's it for now. Hopefully I'll have more to post in a few weeks as I would like to get a good chunk of grinding done.

Have a GREAT holiday everyone!

I'm liking that boat looks like a great restoration boat. I'm also from new england and the only thing thats bad about do a resoration is the seasons winter you cant do any thing. Most the work on that boat you can do you self make it the way you want. i would suggest if you wanna save money do every thing you self if the boat floats it doest matter the way you do every thing else. make the floor sturdy but you don't have to worry about elctonics and seats. the bow of the boat you could put plywood and cushions home made there. and you can uassly get away with a some what cheap motor just test it and have a mechanic check it so you dont get riped off. And since you have kids you will love the trihull safer just don't take the kids with you on choppy days
