Re: 1971 Winner Bimini 17' Tri Hull

Quick question.... should I glass the underside of the new deck when I get to that point?

Re: 1971 Winner Bimini 17' Tri Hull

I used a pre-treated 3/4" plywood sheating for the deck in mine, and I put the treated side down, and resin on the edges. Then the top was covered with csm & resin. I'm not sure if it was the best descision or not, in hind sight I think I'd have at least coated the underside with resin. But what was there lasted for 37 years, so I think I'll be okay. The original deck was 5/8".

Thanks for the responses.

I'm thinking of doing 1.5oz csm on the underside, then a layer of 1.5oz csm on the top. Next a layer of 4oz cloth then a final layer of 1.5oz csm.

Or would 2 layers of 2.0oz csm be sufficient on the top of the deck?

Does anyone have any suggestions on this?

Should The deck be a min. of 8oz. total?

I will probably just roll on some gellcoat for a textured finish instead of carpet.

If she were mine, I'd use 1.5 mat and then finish with 1708 Biax. Your Grandkids will be using it for their kids.

How bout mixing up some thickened resin and tearing/shredding some 1.5 oz mat hair up and mixing it up to peanut butter consistency, sand, wash with acetone and spead it on the hull. Redrill the holes and it'll never rot again.

Hummm... good suggestion wood.

How thick do you think it should be and how far out to either side?

What about multiple layers of 1708biax, each over lapping by about 2 inches??

Thanks in advance for any advice

I'd make it approx. the same as the wood was so that the existing bolts would work, and fair it into the hull. It will be plenty strong and solid. One thing tho, I probably would suggest using epoxy instead of poly, it's a LOT stronger and does NOT crack as much.
