Re: 1973 Chrysler Fin & Fun Rebuild

so, you are suggesting that bed/glass the cap on to the floor instead of just screwing it back down? i like the idea of not putting the wholes in the deck, but im pretty much screwed if i need to pop the cap ever again.

Maybe I don't understand... or you don't understand.

I thought your boat didn't really have any decking on top of stringers and plywood was attached to the bottom "deck" pieces of your cap? That's waht I was asking earlier, is the decking attached to the bottom side of the cap? Or the stringers? You only attach it to one or the other, not to both.

Hmmmm... Ok I think I Gotcha now, when I was doing my demo there were 0 screws in the deck, but the cap was screwed into the floor. The floor was tabbed in like frisco just did in the Carlson rebuild. I was thinking I would pl glue and screwing the deck down as frisco did also. And the screwing the cap back down to the floor.

Thanks for the help. If this doesn't make too much sense, I can take pics tomorrow

Ok, now I understand.

When you lifted the cap off, the decking came up with the cap because it wasn't glassed or fastened to the hull. I gotcha now.

I thought your cap was fabricated like a cap/insert and the deck pieces were glassed to the cap... my bad.

:facepalm::facepalm::facepalm:

no no no...

the floor of the boat was securely attached to the hull and stringers, however it was only held on with Peanutbutter and some type of bondo suff(no screws were used to secure the deck to the hull)

The cap.... it was attached to the deck with screws. but it was screwed down just to hold it all together... the cap was in no way the main structure for the floor to be attached to.

... looking back at the pictures... i unscrewed the screws from the cap/floor (not shown)... then i removed the rubrail... then i raised the cap off and pulled the hull out from under the cap... then i cut out the floor and all of the foam....

As I stated earlier...Put it back exactly the way you found it. Your previous pics show exactly how it was done and you should copy that.

Re: 1973 Chrysler Fin & Fun Rebuild

Ok I am a bit stuck! I knew that i was making the transom a little bigger than it needed to be so that it wouldn't be too small and i would have to start over... However it was supposed to be only about .5in to wide. well yesterday i went to fit it in the boat, so i took my belt sander and mad it fit like planned, but now i am noticing it is not setting all the way against the hull. it touches the hull on either side but there is still about a .5 inch gap in the center where the drain whole is. ?!!!????!!! I am thinking that i may need to cut my transom in a little more. i amthinking that the transom is hetting where the hull makes the rounded transition from the back of the boat to the side??? *picture below* But i am afraid that if I cut it in too much i am going to loose the strength of my transom.

any suggestions?

Your graphic is looking down on the transom from above correct?

If so, chamfer the BACK vertical edges only of the plywood transom....

yup trim off the corners and sides until it fits down in all you need is another 1/4" then fill the other 1/4" with peanut butter. You want that on the sides too.

Re: 1973 Chrysler Fin & Fun Rebuild

Transom is fit, and wrapped in 1 layer of 1.5 chop strand.
Sunday I plan to bed the transom and stringers

Soo I have another major question.

The last thing I want to do is put a hole in my water tight transom when I go to attach my speedometer sensor and depth finder. I know I will have to put wholes in the transom for the ladder and motor mount but am trying to avoid the small unnessecary holes
Any one have some alternate suggestions on how to mount my spedometer and depth finder sensors ?

Looking good. Suggestion for Mounting your Speedo and DF, Glass a 3/4" thick x 2"wide and 4" long piece of plywood to the outside of the transom using CSM and 1708. Predrill the holes and precoat the screws. If the "Plywood Mount" ever rots you can easily fabricate another one.

Re: 1973 Chrysler Fin & Fun Rebuild

Why not through bolt with the stainless bolts coming out from the inside coated with PL or Epoxy to seal the hole and threads and just nut the speedo pickup and ladder from the outside. With the PL and Epoxy those holes will never leak and the bolts won't turn loose in the hole. You could also use head head bolts and embed the head in the inside top layer of the transom and seal the threads with PL and the head with pb then cover with a layer of csm and resin.

Re: 1973 Chrysler Fin & Fun Rebuild

Let me take a second to say THANKS.
I really appreciate everyone's feedback, it has been extremely helpful so far and I know I will have many more questions to come....

speaking of more questions...

I was wetting out some 1708 today to patch a whole I made when i was grinding the boat, and it would not completely wet out... everything was going good, but only 95% was looking "wet" and the other 5% was still white and looked dry... so I mixed more resin and drenched it with resin ... with still no luck.

anyone else have this problem? do i have bad 1708?

Sounds like it's been contaminated with something. That's a shame but it does happen some times. Cut it out, grind it and patch in another piece.

Thats what i was kind of thinkin but it would have to be a contaminatin from the factory since it was individual strands that were woven running the whole lenght of the piece, instead of a littel dry patch
