Re: 1973 Super Sport...I bought it!

Well...I don't think I totally fried the engine but the impeller and upper housing came off in pieces. The lower housing and gaskets look ok, I think the wear plate sacraficed itself.

Where did the oil come from, though? Exhaust manifold? Do I need to pull anything else apart?

This really sucks. It was running better than ever and the only things that needed to be addressed were the throttle cable adjustment, and fuel leaking from the bottom carb.

I will get a new housing and impeller tomorrow and see how it goes. I guess I will have to wait to pull the boat off the trailer for a few more days.

Take a strip of real fine emery cloth and smooth out the shaft. I have had to take a few off with chisels in the past. Hope all is well, a lesson well learned. I don't know of to many that have not done the same.

Thanks fellas...yeah I got the shaft smoothed out once I calmed down. I will let you all know tomorrow.

Still moving forward with the whole project and did some more sanding today as well. I found one suspect rivet that didn't match the others and had some sort of sealant on it. And I am looking forward to diving into the trailer.

Oh well if this motor is cooked. I still love the boat and if I have to repower I have to repower.

Progress pics tomorrow.

My experience is with JohnnyRudes but......... a complete waterpump kit which includes housing, impeller, etc. should get you back together just fine. The oil/water mix is probably just unburnt fuel. Normal. If you'd been cooking it, your overheat buzzer probably would have gone off. I think you're fine.

Ya sorry to hear about that bunker.... Ive done stuff like that in the past...... After I freaked out too, it never happened again :D Usually the worry is worse than the problem. New impeller $20, some more oil $7, experience priceless. :D

Ok so the Merc is fine. I am getting really good at removing and installling impellers and the lower unit. I now have a good strong stream. I am not messing with the enigne anymore.

I am focused on sanding. The port side is just about finished. Tomorrow I am going to try and finsih the starboard side and maybe try to get her off the trailer. Then I have to focus on the hull. Here are some progress pics.

Re: 1973 Super Sport...I bought it!

Well I am happy to say that the boat is now covered in primer. But this job has taken a different direction. A good friend of mine makes a living with his paint and body shop and has been guiding me through this process. I started sanding the roughest area with 80 grit. The hit everything with 180 takingn the sides, transom and front hull down to bare aluminum. This is where things turned....it went from a backyard job to a professional paint booth job. With all time and effort I put into prep he wanted it to pay off. We used a really good straight to metal primer that needs no etching primer. Not cheap though. Tomorrow is back to the shop to sand and fill a couple spots and scuff the rest ot the boat for final paint. The paint is single stage that is made by the same company as the primer...again not cheap. The primer ran just under $200 and the paint will be about $400. More than intended but he assures that it will pay off in appearance and durability.

I have to finish up the bunks and have the trailer all done by monday as the plan is to
prep and mask tomorrow, followed by final paint Friday morning in the booth. Then back onto the trailer Monday morning after setting up all weekend.

Here are some low quality cell phone pics I forgot that I took that day. The last pic I took before primer, and while sparaying primer.

You're gonna bet me with finishing boats if you keep it up. Course when I took the rubber side trim out, I had a lot of trouble getting mine back in and stretched. I think it was MichaelP who told me to pull it with needle nose vise grips. It helped me a bunch. You are making real good progress there.

It is back on the trailer and at home, and I must say it looks incredible! I can't wait until the nre bimini comes in Moday.

Paint and prep was much more involved than I anticipated. Sanding off old paint, filling scratches, finish sanding, primer, and then more sanding and filling, then cleaning and greasing anf then final paint.

Oh what a process this was. I wet sanded all the primer with 320...waxed and geased it, masked it and finally got some paint on it! I have to have at least 40 hours in prep and paint.

I got some fender welded on the trailer. I also got the bunks finished and installed...still need some final adjustments but are really close. The trailer is still ugly and now the really nice boat makes the trailer look even worse. Oh well...

That looks incredible!! Your boat will probably have 1/50th the resistance in the water that mine has! Probably hit 40mph with a 42lb thrust! :)

Very nice!

Re: 1973 Super Sport...I bought it!

I put the side moldings back on today...looking good. I am going to fill the origainal Starcraft Badge holes up with some rivets and get some vinyl decals made to replace them. The decals will be the same color as the pinstripe. I think I am going to go with a silver and dark blue or black stripe.

I have been chasing Tachometer/Voltmeter problems and have come to the conclusion that I have a bad rectifier. After I get that all sorted out I think that will be it for the time being and hit the lake while I still can.

In the fall I plan on painting the top and getting a stereo on board.

Re: 1973 Super Sport...I bought it!

We are getting closer...

After a wonderful weekend away, I was looking forward to getting back home and the package that has been wating to be unboxed all week.

I mounted the Bimini top today before even unpacking the car. It is westalnd form here on iboats...36" high and 6' long, white sunbrella fabric. It looks great and think the dimensions are perfect! I will post some pics when I get off work Wednesday.

I am going to buy a rivet gun this week also to fill the holes left by the Starcraft badges.

Question: Are blind rivets the same as a close ended rivet? Or what kind of rivet do I need to get that will be watertight?
