Re: 1973 Super Sport...I bought it!

Question: Are blind rivets the same as a close ended rivet? Or what kind of rivet do I need to get that will be watertight?

All blind rivets are pull rivets , the mandrel is pulled to expand the rivet. The difference is closed end rivets are basically a top hat shape with no hole away from the mandrel. and regular pull rivets are top hat shape with a hole for the mandrel on both ends (more chance of leaks)

Jeez, what a ramble. Sorry. Closed end are watertight with 5200. Open end are watertight with lots of 5200. Use closed end.

And nice paint, the stripe is perfect!

Re: 1973 Super Sport...I bought it!

I got the dash back together and all the wiring is sorted out this morning. So I am wating on a rectifier to see if the tach will start working.

My nav lights now work with a new three position switch. That was easier to figure out than I thought it was going to be. The red on my stern light isn't so red anymore...will this be a problem?

I am in the home stretch now and it feels good...not quite so overwhelming. We are getting real close!

The red stern light - you are talking about the pole light? That should be white. Hope the tach works for you. You are so close there bunker.

My mistake. I meant to say bow light...the red/green one isn't so red on the red side. I have never been so happy to see a couple little bulbs shining!

OK - got ya now. I think the older nav lights faded over the years. Prob still red enough. You last pic reminds me of a tin cigarette boat - long and sleek. It has to be the way you did the side stripe. Amazing job there bunker.

Okay...more progress this afternoon. I didn't do much but it is another item checked off the list!

She now has a stripe. This wasn't too difficult but it was time consuming and tedious. It isn't perfect and I still have some air bubbles to work out, but hey...it's mine! It is black on silver...the same colors I am going to use for the Starcraft logo.

I also bought some close end rivets and a gun today. I just need some 5200 and I can fill the badge holes with my tiny 1/8" rivets, and also reinstall the transom hooks.

Here are some more pics:

Let there be lights! I got the trailer lights mounted and the trailer wired up today. That is a good feeling. I also plugged those badge hole with some close end rivets. I now know why they are called pop-rivets. I scratched the paint a little twice when they popped.
Here are some shots of the nav lights that recently rewired too. Are my bow lights right? I am on the short list to splash down!

Man I really dig the striping ... Bunker. The clean rivets also look nice against the hull since they are shiny and new. Almost looks like it came right off the factory line. O by the way nice job on the lights too :D

Re: 1973 Super Sport...I bought it!

I got a few things done today...and I undid a few things too.

I bought a cheap volt meter and installed after figuring out that my old one was a fire hazard. So that works now.

I replaced the rectifier...still no tach. I just happened to find a really nice Teleflex tach for 10 bucks at the 75% off table at the RV and Marine store. I opened up the dash a little wired it up and fired the Merc...nothing. So I am thinking that maybe I spent 10 bucks for a bad tach...sheesh! I will do some more troubleshooting tomorrow. Any ideas? I tried the harness from the control box and tried the brown wire from the swtichbox on the stator wire.

I tied down batteries in their final resting places and got all the wiring secured.

I also started repacking the trailer bearings. I got one finished and have to tackle the other tomorrow. I learned that axle seals are more expensive that I expected...at least at NAPA auto parts.

Getting closer...

Ok the tach now works! It only took buying new batteries...oh well. So she was running great and then quit. I started chasing ghosts until I pulled the Dist cap and found little pieces of carbon and spring everywhere. I am glad that is a cheap part. One step forward and another back! It's the little things that will get you/

Re: 1973 Super Sport...I bought it!

I am going to splash this old boat this week. I am waiting on that "brush and spring kit" for the distrubutor cap to come in the mail. It it gets here early enough tomorrow I will shoot to get wet in the afternoon. If it comes in too late I will have to wait until Thursday.

She is registered and I got here all stickered up and the trailer tags current. I have some rope, an anchor, something that resembles a paddle, working lights, a bucket, two air horns, a throwable and my vest...I should be good to go!

I will keep you all posted!!!

Re: 1973 Super Sport...I bought it!

We pulled it off. I got the SS wet this morning with myself and and my 4 year old captain at the helm. It was an uneventful little outing to a small "no wake" resevoir about an hour from the house. Solo loading and unloadind went pretty smooth considering I have never launched a boat in my life. The Merc idled for a couple of hours until I found myself isolated upstream and then got the revs up and she planed out quickly with a 15p prop. My and my boy had a blast! There is a little water seeping though the transom at the motor mounting bolts, so I need to seal those up. Other than that she proved to be a very seaworthy little vessel. There is alot of slop in the control box too. To get full revs I have to throttle with one hand and hold the fast idle lever down with the other. I also had to readjust the shift cable to get reverse to engage before I attempted to trailer the boat. Great trip though!

final touch...
