Before I make another hole in the transom I want to explore all options. What about reinforcing the area under the gunwale between the transom cap and tie down cleat and mouting the support arms there? Possible? Strong enough? Thoughts please...

Hey bunker,

That's where I was thinking of attaching the support arms. I was thinking it would be strong enough right near the back --- especially with a piece of ply in there for added strength.

My concern for you is is the piece of redwood --- at the base of the pole. I would feel more comfortable having it attached to the floor ... but that's just me. Having the base of the pole low puts the pull forces more on the support arms vs the screws holding the pole in place. As I mentioned you may want to consider trimming the pole down a bit... up to u of course!! Is there some reinforcing under the redwood... something to tie it the deck?

Just my 2 cents... just wanna be safe one the first ski!!!:)

Yes there is steel strap underneath. The four mounting bolts and fours lags are all backed by one long piece of strap. So that is 8 bolts through steel. Four more lags will bolt the wood to the splashwell on each side. I am thinking about something similar for the support arms.

Ya... that should hold... support arm force is lateral...so ply or steel sandwiched with the existing tunnel alum should do it. Screw or bolt together... and she'll hold.

You a tuber, wake boarder or skier?

The Brazilian wood is like iron too, should be more then enough support. Did you separate the steel strap from the aluminum of the splashwell?

Nice looking ski pylon! The Brazilian wood looks fantastic! It'd make a nice addition at the helm & dash too.......

There is nothing between the steel and aluminum other than paint. Perhaps I should cut a piece of wood to fit in between the two huh?

Unlikely to get wet, but dissimilar metals shouldn't be in contact and wet. Try to find a single piece of pvc or vinyl cove base & trim it to fit between them & cover the strap. It's cheap, thin, almost non-compressible, and will separate them.

I got some more wood cut and some more holes drilled to finish up the ski pylon install. I cut some pieces to mount on the splaswell area to attach the support arms to. There just wasn't enough area for me to be comfortable going through the transom. It turned out ok I think...but I wish I was a better wood worker. Now I just need to get out on the water!

I finished another project on the old SS today. I now have a real sound system on the boat. An old friend donated two 8" subwoofers and an amp to the boat cause...so I felt obligated to install them. A couple of RCA cables and some 10 gauge wire later, we have a rivet shaking sound system in the boat. I used the rest of the remaining redwood to make spacers for the 8s. It sounds great and I am super excited to blast some tunes at the lake!

I added a powered switch for the second amp on the dash.

This looks amazing! I love how well it cleans up the whole area. It gives it such a finished look. I have seen a few others that have added wood here and I am going to to the same at some point.

I finally got my new power trim hoses installed. Already went out once this year and the hoses were busted so I am still looking forward to my first trip to the lake with power trim. We are heading out again next Saturday...I wonder what will break before then!:D

I have a new thread going in the trailer section...but I thought a few of you would get a kick of me finally trying to remedy my ugly trailer situation. It is looking better already!
