Re: 1974 Penn Yan 23 Sportfish Restoration

Only a few things done on her since my last visit. Working on redoing some electrical work. Over a year now since we got this boat. I never knew what this light was mounted next to the anchor light.

Since I was replacing the anchor light I figured it was time to trace her down. It goes to the manual bilge pump switch on the flybridge. Lo and behold...I turn on the bilge pump and this light strobes! Pretty cool idea, but not for me.

We went fishing Christmas Day. Conditions were perfect. Wind and current were in my favor to fish a favorite spot. After an hour or so without a bite, I donned the lucky hat veritas honus (this is for you my friend) gave me. The bite was on.....Thanks!

Thanks for rubbing it in that you're able to go boating 365 days a year. Mine is sitting up on blocks with every tank, water jacket, and hose filled with antifreeze. What a difference 1200 miles in latitude makes!

Sorry about that, Mr. Luhrs. It is another bright, sunny, day! The wind blowing out of the south at 25kts is keeping me landlocked. Do you feel any better?

I'm working on the foredeck. I added some chain to the anchor line. The chain won't go thru the winch. Here she is wrapped around a cleat I need to use when tying up. I have a safety line attached, but I can't come up with anything regarding what to do with the chain. Any ideas, anybody?

hi captain slick.....(now that i know what sasto means)...( I would love to hear the story of that journey by the way !) :)

What was the idea with the bilge strobe thing? I don't get it.....kinda like a big flashing light when your boat is taking a pee?????

ok.....i really dont like the chain /cleat idea either....dont like what it is doing to the deck....just DO NOT WANT.....lol

I would make a really cool looking bucket or holder for the chain that fits under the roller.....one that does not look like a bucket.....but is the shape ...(long and narrow) of the yoke of the roller. and has a overboard drain.

your thoughts capt?

The trip to the Bahamas in the 18' Sea Pro with a 90 Merc was uneventful..oops! The fishing was eventful, though.

I think the strobe was in place to let the operator know the manual bilge pump switch is on.

You have a good idea, buddy. I may just cut out a hatch. That area is above the anchor locker anyway.

Looks like you were having a good time. I'm glad the hat works!!!;) Wish I'd been there with you. Hopefully, we'll get together again sometime soon.

Sorry about rushing off the phone yesterday. I was on a ladder, figuring out some difficult angles to cut crown moulding (a diagonal wall across a corner, with a vaulted ceiling)... Fun fun fun. I was doing this at my In-Laws lake house. Clear, staingrade crown moulding... No compesating for inaccurate cuts.

PS: The hat looks good on you.:)

All is well with Baccala. Many, many more hours on her. 3 oil changes since my last post. I finally primed the cockpit and put a very expensive rug over it. (was given to me, I had to do it!)

I had to replace the steering after taking some young'ns tubing. The old steering couldn't take it anymore. The bearings went out on the raw water pump.

Re: 1974 Penn Yan 23 Sportfish Restoration

More pics coming soon.

Try to make a long story short. I took a couple from the marina whom own a large boat out for a little cruise and watch the sunset. They brought along a cooler full of beer and a couple bottles of wine. They were really living it up! We returned after sunset and I put Baccala on the lift, raised her up a little bit, and walked the dock. Stopped and talked to several boaters along the way. My time for a beer, or two, three, I don't know.

I had a knock on the door in the morning. Island security asking me if I owned Baccala. Yup...I do! She floated off the lift bunks during high tide that night. She floated past a dozen boats, across the lagoon, into a narrow canal, and just sat there. A sheriff was there and ask me if I was Mike, the owner. Yup....that's me!

He was about to call Coast Guard if security didn't find me, which can be difficult at times. My cell phone and wallet was on the table... and a whole trash bag full of wine bottles and beer cans in the cabin. The Sheriff shook my hand and told me how glad he was to see me. They thought I was overboard.

I'll get back to taking pics.

Yup, woodonglass, white gotta go. I have more mahogany and could do it in more planking, but not sure if it would be appropriate. I faired it out and probably used Rustoleum. Maybe a solid color....or how about mahogany formica. I'm not good at woodworking, so simple is good.

I don't know how many hours I have on that sole...

Mahogany veneer. It's real wood and can be stained and finished to match.

]I'm turning this interior to my good friend who lives in the marina. We do everything for each other.....if needed. He is one of the best I know. A perfectionist. I'm going to have to beat up his work with a chain and hammer to make some "petina". Between us we have enough Mahogany veneer and boards, plywood and formica to get the job done.

I have ran aground several times since the keel repair. A couple on purpose...a couple times exploring and expecting it, and a couple times on oyster bars.......I wasn't expecting that! When I pull her out for a bottom paint job, I might as well do a keel job from stem to stern.

I have actually moved on her 'till summer. With 2 fridges, a 2 burner stove, rail mount grill, and a stand-up head, (only if I open the foreward hatch and stand up:cool:) hot showers, laundry, Tiki with TV's, and a village grocer, and onsite storage facility, it's better than camping out. Certainally not for everyone!

Y'all take care!

Here she is in her winter slip. She was on a lift till yesterday. I tried living on land a couple months ago. A quarter mile from Baccala. I gave it up and am sleeping on her. Many things have been redone. New flybridge bench and trim and new Bamboo floor to name a few.

I tore out the mahogany sole before it was finished. I came across some real bamboo for the flooring. Have trim cut now and am installing it. I like the brighter look as I do a lot of evening boating and night fishing

Here she is at out Tiki after a hard days run. Well...not so hard. The ICW was like glass. I had the window black mesh installed earlier in the summer. What a difference it makes. We did a temperature test between white and black. The interior window was much cooler with the black than the white. We can only figure because the black absorbs the heat not letting it pass.at tiki.jpg

Can anyone give me any information on Sasto? I saw recently his boat on CL for free, and I was wondering what happened to him. I kow he was ill some years ago, Cancer I believe, but it was in remission I thought. Anyone know what happened to him? I chatted with him a few times here and other sites about our Penn Yan boats.,
