Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

So my focus was just on the bottom. I did not spend a lot of time sanding it down etc as it is the bottom and more my test area as well before i hit the sides and transom. You will see some orange peel but that is what was there and me not sanding and prepping it to be the absolute best. I figure i will do that next summer if it really bothers me.

Now the sides of the hull i make sure to get nice and smooth and wet sand it so hopefully when i spray it today it will look a whole lot better.

now the proof of the color change beginning.............

more pics

Things were flowing nicely so i ventured to the transom to see how it would look.

a closer view of the transom

still a little bit of orange peel up close but the results are MUCH better, at least to me. Hopefully the rest of the hull will turn out good as well.

I stopped right at the chine for the waterline so I could tape it off there and not have to worry about he over spray messing up what i had already completed. so today will be tape off, scuff up the areas where the paint went over where i was wanting to stop at, wipe down and spray spray spray away.

thanks for the help with the setup

Yeah, I'd say you got the paint thing figured out. If you wait till the spring and hit it with a buffer and some light compound you would be amazed how that light orange peel would disappear. It's WAY insignificant, IMHO.. Nice JOB!!!!

Nice, RR. I like the blue too. Like WOG said, buff and maybe some light color sanding - the orange peel will go poof. Hope you can finish the sides while it's still good weather.

Good to see you back. Looks like the time away helped you regroup. Paint looks great. Glad to see it going your way. Good luck with the sides.

 So sorry JB and others, I hate when that girl comes out in me. :D Ok so I have finally read the entire thread and I must say, very nice job on the boat and great info to consider. I wonder if I will do another boat project when my first one is done? Hmmm, jury is still out on it, but it is fun and gives me something to do in my down time. Perhaps I will try digging into the motor on mine over the winter. I am learning so much from all of you guys, keep up the great work and conversation.

Question, would it be worth the time or money to coat the inside of a tin boat with the flex sealer that is advertised on tv? IF, and that is a big if, it really works as well as they say and does not shrink upon drying it could save a lot of time. Of course anytime one tries to save time they spend twice as much so maybe not. lol

I have very similar sides in my boat that create a pocket along each side. I don't have much other storage and was hoping to come up with an alternate idea for storage. Rrumba have you considered any other ideas or were you trying to keep it close to factory built? I too have minimal storage under the cap in the front, but not much. I do not have the 2 seats you have in the back so I thought I could do a bench seat all the way across the back with storage under the seat, and have it hinge to gain access to the bilge area if needed. Are you still thinking of putting your gas tank up front?

Very nice work.

AJ, the gas tank will depend on the one that i can pick up. I wanted to just to keep some weight forward but that is tank dependent and will have to go through the Jasoutside battery decision process and approval before that determination can be made.... :D

as far as storage, i am using my back to back seats for that, the forward area, and one side of the rear seats if i put the gas tank back there. one side for the tank, one for storage and batteries and then the middle where the bilge pump is will have a slide out like a drawer for my cooler score that my son found.

I am not concerned about factory more about function and family. If you have the room for a bench in the back then that would provide lots of storage. Look at Jas umpteenmillion boat threads, not sure if he ever finished any but the one he sold though, he has some good storage ideas as did azlo and a bunch of others.

I forgot about the SC cooler you son found. Did you get some more paint on before the temps fell through the floor?
