Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

been awhile since i posted an updated. been putzing around on it here and there for an hour or so, have not had much time to work on anything. anyway now the update

Here is the last of the floor installed. i also fabbed up some side and end stops so nothing falls over the sides and under the floor since it is a storage area.

one i used to get a good seat height for the new seat bases. these were the old seats out of my IMP that i replaced the all the wood on and used the covers as they are still in good condition

Here is the primed splashwell, waiting for color

both side gunwales are done as well just no pic of them.

Had some major decay on the bow plate so i wire brushed everything to get all corrosion out, vinegar bath, soap and water bath then acetone wipe and then JB weld over all the bad areas.

Ok so now i do have some questions on the bow plate support structure. It seems like commone practice to cut the very front piece so you do not have to take off the entire bow plate. see below

so my question is what is the best way to fix this? should i just replace it with several pieces of epoxied plywood, use dimensional lumber and what type, or just re-use the piece that is there? I kinda want to replace it but not sure which would be best to use and i will be taking it all apart and putting at least one coat of epoxy on all the pieces.

Any suggestions?

To my completely inexperienced eye, that wood looks like possibly Mahogany and seems to be in really good condition...

If, and that is a HUGE If, I am correct, you should just mark it, disassemble, sand, refinish, and assemble...

Then again I could be completely off my rocker......

Have a great weekend!

GT i believe you are correct that it is mahogany and it is all covered up instead of showcasing the wood

I am more concerned with the gap that will be there from the kerf of the blade. i thought about maybe using some angle aluminum between there to take up the gap and give it some more strength since that is right in the middle where you would step up to walk on the bow.

now that i think about it maybe i can cut a piece out of a scrap piece to fill it in, use gorrilla glue or Titebond II and if needed then run a piece in the back to sister it up to it.

Re-use existing it is, now to find the best plan to fill in the gap.

I've always felt that structural strength counts first, looks count second. I would replace that dashboard. Mahogany was originally used for the structure because it is light, strong and withstands water reasonably well. It wasn't installed for looks, since the original was covered up by Starcraft anyway. If you just want strength, you could use plywood with or without epoxy. If you want good looks, trying to make that butchered existing piece into something you'll be proud of will be an exercise in futility. It won't be strong and it will likely look like caca. In my opinion, a new piece of mahogany is really not that expensive in the scheme of things and if properly finished, you'll have something front and centre to be proud of. - Grandad

Grandad, Decker,

thanks for the input. I am not worried about the look of it as it is covered up by the other items, i was saying how it was a shame not to show the wood since it was a nice piece.

not sure how much a new piece of mahogany would be to replace the current one, but i will check tomorrow and find out. Do it right now instead of do it again later. I Will have to see if it can be used somewhere else for something else....

Hey Bear thanks for the fly by.....

Ok, so i decided to replace it with a piece of tight grained southern yellow pine instead that will be coated with epoxy to seal it. It is going to be covered up so no sense in the cost of a nicer grained wood. although i may put a piece of 1/8" luan or birch or something for the very small part that is visible on the passenger side since i do not want to put vinyl back on it, but it is a small section. might do the same thing for the helm section as well just to dress it up.

Bow plate is etched and primed and all is ready for color. will have to be tomorrow though as i have to get ready and head out to the

WARRIOR DASH in about 2 hours.

have a productive weekend folks

Good Luck on the "Warrior Dash", rr...

Yeah I didn't mean that the wood should be showcased, I just thought that it was reuseable after a bit of TLC...being how's it doesn't look to be rotten...

Good idea to make it one solid piece of pine, since it is structural...

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

PM - I know this crowd (not that i participate in any of it myself) and if you mention or even think of one everyone comes out of the wood work, it's like an all call on paging so no date yet, another reason explained below as well..

Fish, GT thanks for stopping in

Jas - THE DASH....uh yeah about that.

got through the dash this weekend and had an excellent time with the wife, 2 of my sons and our friends. right at the end there are 2 fire obstacles to jump over then barbed wire crawl into a mud pit and the END, maybe 100ft from fire to end. No one had any injuries all went well until this lumbering ox jumps the first fire obstacle, stutter steps to make the second jump and i believe one foot got scared and decide it was not leaving the ground AT ALL   so what happens next............

that's right, diving straight into the fire pit head first. i put my arms up in an X to protect the face and head and then plowed through and slid through the rest of way . can you say fire, that man is on fire  rolled over several times Popped up and dove into the mud pit to put out the coals that were stuck to my skin. I did get a yell that i was an animal after everyones gasps, laughs and shock, so yeay, go animal

So with that the right forearm from about the wrist halfway to the elbow had burnt skin dripping off when i washed it with water at the finish line. 2nd degree burns on the forearm which is the worst part, and on the sides and both legs, the right one is worse from the inside thigh to the ankle with the nice blisters, charred skin etc. etc etc.

anywho, need to sand and paint the remaining pieces yesterday as i did not get to them for the reasons above, but they will be done this week if the weather holds out and cut the new bow supports and seal em up. Hopefully this week i can get some MAJOR progress done as I have my glassers waiting for some much needed attention.

I've been burned, bad, all over my right leg when I fell into a fire once. Easily the most painful thing I have ever experienced.

Keep those wounds clean my friend!

Sorry... Are we far enough removed from this incident where it is okay to laugh?

Seriously, I hope you are okay and that it doesn't hurt too bad...

And, yes, by all means take Jason's advice on following the doctor's orders, resting up and keeping wounds clean because he gets a gold star for that!

Jas - i believe that a burn is the worst pain, form all my injuries, they seem like they never stop hurting and as soon as tepid water hits them they hurt all over again. I so despise when i get burned

PM - yeah your are far enough removed and AWAY that you can laugh..... ;) heck i am trying to figure out myself how a person with 100% blindness and an amputee can make it but by ox style kung fu was no match. I am laughing myself so you may as well join in.

It all heals at some point, but knowing how us guys work, cut ligaments, burns, cut up hands, broken bones missing eyes, arm ripped off by a bear etc. we still have our projects to keep moving forward on, so away we go. Geez men can be stupid about things, i tell ya. oh well what do you do other than a little boat therapy
