Yeah, My idea of fun is NOT running through Fire, or crawling through a mud hole. But what do I know, I'm just an...

Jeez, if you had any more fun, you might be reading this from a hospital room...

All in all looks like you guys got the tar beat outa you and had a BLAST in the process...

Glad to see you made it through in mostly one piece...

Kudos to you and yours...:D

PS- I have used good 'ol petroleum jelly [aka Vaseline] on serious burns and it helps to keep the area moist, relatively pain free, and help with the healing...covered with gauze, of course, very loosely...

Actually GT, i made through with extra pieces until i hit the water.......lol

Well my two older boys were here last night and gave me a hand with putting the seat bases together. just a little sanding and cleats to add to them and they will be done.

Bow plate has been sanded, etched and primed. now just need to hit it the gunwale top pieces and splashwell with scotch brite pad so color can go on it as soon as i am SEALED up.

pics to follow

Ok, so here we go......

all etched and primed.......

100_0685.jpg

100_0683.jpg

and the worst one that went from this.....

100_0629.jpg

to this..........

100_0682.jpg

There was so much corrosion under the carpet from what i believe was the lack of any protection of primer or paint at all under it. It took a lot of time to keep applying JB weld and using the DA sander and repeating to get it nice a smooth.

Still have not added the color to it as I have plans to change to a darker color blue then what it currently is. Going to try my hand at spraying the hull from the water line up to the top with a fade in of the darer color. Now the admiral tells me she does not like Ford blue.

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

on a side note since i will be changing colors.....

to setup for spraying and trying to find the best way to cut down on water in the line that was a big issue with my compressor as i guess i had the water trap to close to the reciever for it to do any good. so a few work arounds and i built a cooling tower/water trap between the compressor pump and receiver tank and it works like a charm. But all that goes to Franz and his franzinator. Kind of looks like a science project or something.

the Franzinator..........

Franzinator-1.jpg

and with it installed....

Sorry for the derail there guys.......

The compressor is going to be a problem for me. I have access to one about the size in your picture from the guy that manages the yard where I keep my boat. He sprays gel coat on his jet ski (he rents them) repairs. He says he does run low on air at times. But since you'll be spraying paint, you won't have the time constraints of gel coat kicking off.

BTW, is there a flux capacitor in there somewhere? lol

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

Ok, so here was the sole installed with what i thought was proper covering of epoxy.....

100_0229.jpg

and then i had it sitting outside in the sun and viola...... the true test came to surface......

one section had formed waves in one section.........

100_0660.jpg

as well as what appeared to be a bunch of cracks, poor adhesion possibly due to water/sap trying to escape and it turned the epoxy and wood a gray kinda color

100_0658.jpg

So the only logical thing to do was grab the resin fiber disc and sand down all the bad spots........

100_0661.jpg

Talk about sucking having to do it all over again, but better to find out now before i got much farther.

Now it looks like this.........

100_0663.jpg

The section that had the "waves" in it you can see in the picture on the left side about the middle where it is a darker brown. What i found when i sanded it down was a LARGE void under the top layer which did not help the situation since that part of the plywood was not actually adhered to itself. So i mixed up some Jasoutside style epoxy peanut butter and filled it in with several layers so it was now SOLID!

When I applied the first coat of new epoxy i used a body filler spreader and put on a rather heavy coat and i could tell the difference from the first coat i put on during the winter. Much better penetration and the flex just about went away and it was a much stiffer sole. did the same thing with the second coat of epoxy and man what a difference.

Temperature really makes a difference when applying. I had heated my garage and the pieces while doing them but i guess it was not enough. I hope this helps someone else and saves them the hassle i went through.

WOW what a handful to type.........

It's in there tucked away secret squirrel style.

I actually do not have a problem with air supply as it has a dual compressor and even using a da sander, die grinder, and trying to exhaust it to see how well the supply woud be i had a hard time to get it to drop below 70psi. If your using a pressure pot, which i believe you were in your thread you should not have a problem i would think. My next add on is a Franz air polisher using an old propane tank used upside down close to the end of the line which will also add a little more capacity, not much mind you but some.

I have several die sanders and they drag my compressor down quickly. Sand for a minute, wait for a minute. So I assume your setup is a bit more powerful than the one at the yard.

What are your compressor's specs?

it was originally a cambell hausfeld 60 gallon. it has a 5hp single phase 220v baldor motor, the pump is a single stage (wish i could have afforded a dual) twin cylinder with air delivery (1050 RPM): 17.5 SCFM @ 40 PSI, 15.2 SCFM @ 90 PSI

the old compressor pump had bad rings and the rebuild kit cost just under what new pump was so i replaced the pump. The PO tried to run it on 110v not knowing much about it so i got it for a Jas bottom feeder price :D

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

so now with the sole all sorted out and fixed...... AGAIN....... it was Carpet time. for the last 2 weeks i have been trying to get it done but the rain keeps popping in and it only seems to pop in right above me. drive in any direction about 2 minutes and no rain..... think i was getting a message.......

so finally today i was able to get the carpet on the sole and now waiting for it to set up, the glue says 72 hours..... but at the rate i am moving that should work.

Majority of the sole

100_0676.jpg

the bow under the bow plate for storage.

100_0677.jpg

think up in the bow storage area i am going to glue the carpet to the hull to prevent things from falling into the bilge. not sure just yet but i kind of like the way it looks

100_0678.jpg

also had to throw a seat in there with some of the vinyl that i will be using on the side panels to see how the color scheme passed the admiral's inspection. the seat bases will actually get sprayed the same color as the other blue parts using the new and improved WOG formula

100_0680.jpg

and another view.

Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY

well for right now that is what i have been up to, if the rain stays away hopefully i can get some color on the remaining pieces.

Oh, forgot, i also picked up the TNT rebuild kits and will be overhauling them to fix the leaks and holding the engine in place as well and prepping the ole rude for paint. Gonna paint her a nice shiny black from top to bottom and new decals.

well that's it for now.... until tomorrow.
