Re: 1975 Starcraft 140 Evinrude OB -- Restoration IN PROGRESS FINALLY
Ok, so here was the sole installed with what i thought was proper covering of epoxy.....
and then i had it sitting outside in the sun and viola...... the true test came to surface......
one section had formed waves in one section.........
as well as what appeared to be a bunch of cracks, poor adhesion possibly due to water/sap trying to escape and it turned the epoxy and wood a gray kinda color
So the only logical thing to do was grab the resin fiber disc and sand down all the bad spots........
Talk about sucking having to do it all over again, but better to find out now before i got much farther.
Now it looks like this.........
The section that had the "waves" in it you can see in the picture on the left side about the middle where it is a darker brown. What i found when i sanded it down was a LARGE void under the top layer which did not help the situation since that part of the plywood was not actually adhered to itself. So i mixed up some Jasoutside style epoxy peanut butter and filled it in with several layers so it was now SOLID!
When I applied the first coat of new epoxy i used a body filler spreader and put on a rather heavy coat and i could tell the difference from the first coat i put on during the winter. Much better penetration and the flex just about went away and it was a much stiffer sole. did the same thing with the second coat of epoxy and man what a difference.
Temperature really makes a difference when applying. I had heated my garage and the pieces while doing them but i guess it was not enough. I hope this helps someone else and saves them the hassle i went through.
WOW what a handful to type.........
