1" Southern Yellow pine Coated with Resin and Glass will work just fine. Yellow Pine Heart wood is used in wooden boat building alot. The resin in the wood makes it very water resistant.

Hopefully I'm getting the wrong idea from reading but you're not planning on just putting new wood back into the the old string skins are you?

No expert but I did read this.

Wood, again thank you for the "all clear".

TDF, what a cuincadence.
I spent about 3 1/2 hours nonstop grinding, two sets of respirator filters, 6 or 7 flapper wheels, and a ripped up tyvek suit. I did take a 10 min break though.

All I can say is, you're gunna enjoy puttin it back together a heck of a lot more than you did grindin it down.

Took a break from the grinding today and went to pick up a sheet of ply. Man that is some pretty plywood that aruaco is.

Spent a little time today fabricating the lower transome. I cut my ply in three sections. My transome is just under 2' tall. Transome is just under 6' wide. So there for I was able to cut a 2x4 section off of one end of the ply (used for the lower transome) then rip the other section for the upper transome.

After my line is drawn, I use the level and clamps as a guide. Really didn't matter if it was THAT straight but you never know when and where you'll need a striaght cut.

I tried different methods to make a good template. I took my time to get the old wood from the lower part so I could use it as a temp. That was a waste of time. After the grinding of the old resin out of that area, the wood removed was just scrape and useless. So I went a different route there.

Waste of time there. This down here worked well.

As for the upper part, this is the scrape piece of chip board from picture #2.

It was a total PITA to cut to fit. Way too much trimming here and there. If I kept at it, there wouldn't be much left.
Closed the day with this.

I beleave this will work alot better.

Hard too get motivated on a extremely full stomach but I jump in the boat today after the Easter dinner. (I love good food)
Finished up grinding today so i could clean the hull fairly well. Gett'n ready for the trans and stringers. I ground out the trim around the top of the hull. Don't know what is called but its the strip of wood that gives you something to screw into when you attach cap and rub-rail. Ground out the old carpet adhesive. I know it looks like crap but I just ground out where I'll be reglassing. Hope everyone had a wonderful Easter.

Re: 1976 Arrowglass transom replacement and then some

Haven't cut the transome wood yet, I just have a question.

I do not want to worry about even touching the stringers or the transome again. Now if I want to change the deck later, fine. But no stringers or trans.

My question: If I use PL adhesive to bond the two 3/4 inch plys together will it last?
Another one: Is it cool to bed the stringers down with the PL but, still use the super dooper PB to fillet it out?

Again I want this thing to last.

TDF, I find your "FIBERGLASS" thread very useful. You have asked all the right questions which has saved me from hunting down the proper way to Mix the resin and that sort of stuff. Wood chimed in alot. Thanks guys. You should come back to the LIGHTERSIDE and finish that glasser. I think you have done really well so far. Thanks.

Not qualified to answer the PL trans thing.

If I remember right if you PL the stringers in just fillet the PL and skip the PB. I'm thinking the preferred method was a spoon dipped in acetone but not sure how well I remember.

I'm really itching(pun or not) to get back on the AC here shortly. I'm just waiting to get past these freeze warnings before I order more resin. I'd hate to have a new bucket freeze in the garage cause I really don't want that stinkiness in the basement.

SKIP the PB fillet on the stringers, REALLY? That would be nice.

Not that I don't trust you, TDF, I can see you have been around here for awile and prolly read 42 plus 3 times what I have, but can I get a ^^^+1 on that.

Now that I think about it, it does sound logilcal, BUT the hull flexs running down the lake. Seems like the fillet would be weaker and would cause the cloth to delam or crack/break. And what about the bond, PL to resined glass?

I am a major newbe to the use of PL, Fglass and all this stuff. Never used it before. I've just used regular ol' caulk you know.

No offense TDF. I appreciate all your information.

Check the first link in my signature. I have updated the drawings and instructions. It "Shows and Tells" you exactly how to bed and install your stringers. I would use Titebond III wood glue to glue your transom laminations together. It's 100% waterproof, cures in 24 hours, and is strong as heck. PL takes 72 hours to cure and thick applications can take even longer and the outgassing must be totally done or it will affect the ability of the glass to adhere.

Re: 1976 Arrowglass transom replacement and then some

Yeah, I checked out the Titebond. I LIKE IT. I checked HD and Lowe's for it online and all they show is the small bottles. I think I'll use a minimum of 3 bottles. Maybe they will have bigger containers in store. This will be for gluing the two 3/4 plys together.

Titebond III used on hard maple set in room temp has a 4000 psi strength, 57% wood failure. Pretty good!

Spent about 45 minutes on the trans today. A lil' work is better than no work.

I used a square and level to flatten my pattern out. Tape, slide the square a lil' bit, tape then slide, ext....Used ducktape to hold it down. Once paper is folded, it likes to stay that way.
Traced it out with pencil. When I was happy with the way it looked, I traced the pencil with a sharpe. Finally just cut it out.

I was worried about ruining a $47 peice of pretty ply but it turned out pretty good. Aruaco is nice ply. I will use for future projects.

The Top part of the transome is not cut yet. I left it sticking out so when I get the wood to lay back on the skin right, I'll trace and trim as needed.

That's pretty good tracin n' cuttin fer a Kentucky boy!!!!! My Lowe's sells gallon jugs of the TB III. I buy em and re-fill my small bottles for easy handling. To glue up your transom, pour the glue on and use a 1/8" toothed trowel to spread it on both pieces, one vertical the other horizontal. That way you'll get total coverage

Re: 1976 Arrowglass transom replacement and then some

Hey, ain't no thang TDF. Sounds like a good idea. I haven't really researched the PL so I have no idea of the texture, hardness, or the bond strength after the cure. Maybe I'll check it out sometime.

Thanks Wood, 1/8 toothed trowel on the shopping list. I was going to use a bondo spreader.
