Re: Floor fiberglass help.

cabosil is a filler that thickens the resin and is used for filling gaps. i.e. the gap between the deck and the sides of the hull. and for filleting to make a coved corner to make the glass lay around the corner.

It will help for you to read other threads on the same subject, do a search and it will answer many questions.

Re: Floor fiberglass help.

Yeah that's what I figured. How much resin would I need if I only did two layers of CSM?

I called USC and left a message. I'm probably gonna place my order tomorrow. My Questions are at the bottom of the post :D

Made A TON of progress today. JB welded the gas tank divets. There were about a million.

Also, Finished pulling the old flooring and foam and gas lines. It's totally barren! Sorry the picture is a little blurry. Ready to start building UP!!

QUESTIONS
SO when I get to it, How do I prepare the resin and adhere to the CSM?
DO I need to re-seal the outside of my gas tank with rustoleum paint or something since I sanded away at it to expose the divets?

Re: Floor fiberglass help.

Did you have holes in your tank? Don't know if JBWeld is good for that. In any case it would be a good idea to pressure test your tank. Don't want leaks after you spend all the time and money to re-do the deck. Wish I could help on the glassing questions but that is way out of my league, but the guys here can tell ya. Wood has given you some good info ^^^^^.

Re: Floor fiberglass help.

Nah, no confirmed holes, just a bunch of divets that had the potential to become
Holes when I starte pressure testing... I'm gonna do that tomorrow and hope for the best. That's why I wanna do everything right this time!

Re: Floor fiberglass help.

Nope, the stringers were dry when I took my core samples a week or so ago.. also reinforecd with a second layer of biax by PO. They're great!
Might re-do the bracing that was between them.. there was some rotted wood just sandwiched between there by PO, you can see where it used to be.. btu that would be about 4 Cu FT of wood.. or might just use foam for that.

Re: Floor fiberglass help.

Yeah, I have all the foam, ready to cut and place tomorrow. I have my wood for the deck -- rethinking using PT wood. should I go with just a regular exterior grade ply? if so what type of wood? -- I want to place my order from us composites tomorrow so I can get the floor in asap and start all the fun stuff :D

Re: Floor fiberglass help.

Go to Lowe's or HD and see if they have Underlayment. If not see if they have Arauco. If not then ask for AC FIR Exterior Grade. Hand Pick and get the FLATEST piece you can find with the LEAST amount of KNOTS.

Re: Floor fiberglass help.

If you are just doing the 50 sq ft of Deck and NOT the stringers then my previous order suggestion still stands. A Gallon of resin will coat both sides of a Sheet of plywood which is 32 sqare ft. You MUST precoat the the plywood first before applying any mat so that is almost 2 gallons before any mat is applied. the bottom of the plywood will recieve One layer of mat which will take another gallon. Then the top will Get two layers not including the tabbing and the filleting. Yep 5 gallons is gunna be just about right and you MIGHT be a little short. You sure don't want to WASTE any. Make sure and order a bubble buster roller too!!

Re: Floor fiberglass help.

Can I use the 435 resin? I'm gonna talk with my co owner about pricing and such tomorrow and post up where we stand and such. Glassing and gelcoating the floor seems like it will be close to 300?

Re: Floor fiberglass help.

Yeah 435 resin is OK, 404 is better. $300 sounds about right.

Re: Floor fiberglass help.

Great. I just had a LENGTHY conversation with the tech at US composites. Basically, it boils down to:

I'm going to do a layer of 1708 on the top of the deck (he said its much easier to work with and much stronger than CSM) and I'm going to need about 3 gallons of resin to do my deck and use cabosil as a filler around the sides. For the underside of teh deck, I'm going to seal it either with epoxy or resin or paint it with a exterior grade paint. How does this sound? altogether should be able to do it for 150. Just in my price range!

I really need some input here, I'm totally new to fiberglass and this is all overwhelming
