Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

I'd just cut it larger so you will have access on both sides of the knee brace. If you look at my deck I have no wood across the back at all. My stringers stop short so I left it open.

Or you could flip the wood over, if only you hadn't cut the edges at an angle.

Nice progress, you are really getting motivated:)

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Thanks Huron! Too bad I jumped the gun and angled the edges before test fitting. Maybe this was all meant to be... Scary :)

For some reason I thought my stringers went all the way back and there was support back there, and our boats are pretty much the same so that means mine don't either . Already forgot how to put her back together now :D.

Sweet, guess I really didn't screw up then! I'll make the cuts tomorrow.

Sorry for my questions, just want to make things right the first time. Thanks guys!

Thanks for the picture EZ! I like your trim around it as well. I'm not too worried about it all now .

I'm going to go out soon and start sawing, just need to wait a bit since it's Sunday and Easter Sunday at that!

Happy Easter guys! Hope everyone has a great day!

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Hey, this is looking good! I'm eager to see the next steps. I'm working on my first re-floor on an aluminum boat (1986 Alumacraft 1610 Supreme), and I'm not sure what to do where the deck meets the sides. When I replaced the floor on a fiberglass boat, I glassed the deck to the sides. I've checked out EZ's thread, and Huron Angler's but didn't see how that was treated. If you don't seal the deck to the sides, won't water get under the deck?
Thanks,
Lewis

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Thanks Lewis! Another aluminum guy? Sweet! :D Have you put any pictures of your boat up?

The way it looks to me is that the deck should just be secured to the ribs, and the deck coated with epoxy and just leave the sides open. Then the water can flow down there on the sides if there happens to be water. This is how my boat was from the factory, there wasn't any type of seal.

But you have a good point, and now I'm wondering if just leaving it open is a good idea and what I should do. I would think trying to direct all water to the bilge would be a good idea(like on a glass boat). I am planing on copying Jasoutsides sand treatment on the deck, so that might do something not quite sure though. Hmm hopefully someone will jump in here.

--------------------------------

Ok so now I have two pieces of the deck in for their first test fit. The middle one needs a bit more of a sand. I'm trying to cut them just a tad larger so that I don't have too many screw ups later on. They all need a bit of sanding before epoxy, and I will need to try them with the stringers in later.

So I made the cuts here. Much better!

You can also see my 2x4 clamped to the transom. I've got some more aluminum backers drying at the moment.

Middle portion cut. I really can not cut straight, so that means a bit more sanding. Good thing these will for the most part be hidden .

Ohhh man the excitement is growing! Just need to get some rivets tightened up and Gluvit down before this goes in.

It's a good sight when new wood is going down :D!

Forgot to add. I have hit my sides of the boat a couple times when lifting the deck into the boat. It's a bit hard with one person. But needless to say my paint is holding up pretty darn good! It's pretty hard now, and only one chip from where i really whacked the side :D. Wooohooo!

Boatguy,
Well, I'm not sure I'm entirely an aluminum guy -- I've got a few fiberglass skeletons in my closet! But in addition to this Alumacraft, I have a little 1950s Lone Star fourteen-footer and there's a 1982 Starcraft sixteen-footer in family (my sister's now), so I guess I've got some aluminum in my blood. Yes, I have started a thread on the Alumacraft project. It's at: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=472568&p=3196934#post3196934. Just getting started, but I'm already spending money like a sailor on shore leave -- epoxy, paint, pedestals, plywood, not to mention an outboard!

Close enough of an aluminum guy for me, Lewis :). I had a glasser before (never in the water) and then I saw the light, and thank god I did :D. I'll go check out your thread! I've been spending my fair share of money as well, and I've still got a lot of stuff to get still .

Re: 1978 16' Starcraft SuperSport Resto

Got my hull all power washed out now, and my last rivet tightened.
I may add again that that el-cheepo bottom feeder rivet gun works very well! Much better than spending all the money. I can hear the sound and how it changes now when they are tight :D sweet!

So now just need to get the hull wiped down and vacuumed out of the last dirt to be ready for Gluvit. Once Gluvit is done I'll fill her up again for one last leak check.

I just need to cut my last piece for the bow, and the tip of the bow. I'm planning on joining the two with dowels or biscuits to make it stronger. That piece used to be very weak, and I thought I was going to go through a couple times this past year.

Also I've been working on the stripe again. After my first fail I've been toying around with trying to find a picture to go off of. No luck :( google and everything. What I need is a direct side view of the boat, and then I can get things right. If anyone has one please post it. I'm also going to need to find a vinyl shop to do the cutting, some things have came up and I won't be able to do it at school. I'll be looking around, but if anyone knows or works at one let me know.

Thanks Guys :D! I'm getting somewhere .

Red would look nice and could possibly go with a truck I may get. But I've got my mind up for navy blue to keep it like it was :).

I could always go with lime green. Then I could be spotted if I was having problems ;). That would be different. Glad to see you back around fsh. :D

I think my stripe is about right now :D. I'll let you guys let me know. Thank you Huron for the photo.

Here's Huron's stripe.

And here it is now on the computer.

I'm going to contact a couple local sign shops to see how much it will be to cut it out. Hopefully not too much. The only real reason I'm doing it this way instead of taping by hand is because I don't want it to be really out of whack. If I painted all the time then I would probably tape it out, but I don't :).

So would that basically be like a big decal sort of a deal? Cool!

Jas, it will just be used as a template to paint. That way my lines will be nice and crisp. I could just use it as a decal, but I think actuall paint will look way better :).

Ah, got it! Yah, that seems like it would save a ridiculous amount of time trying to make those curves with green tape. I know I for one would make a total mess eventually having to throw away my boat and start over.:)

Exactly what I thought :D. If I painted things for a living, I'd just tape it off but I don't...

Your paintjob turned out great :D. I just know I can't tape it out .
