MMMMMMM, BBQ...any weather, any place...is good for BBQ!

I just knew you would find a nearer and better supplier...

May your glassing supplier woes be diminished to nothing but a faint memory...you WILL find a courteous, low priced, close by supplier soon, I just know it.

Hope your motor woes are quickly resolved...

Have a great week...:)

Went out today with my LadyBug. It was a very warm day but windy. I took this short video that I thought I would share.

Re: 1978 MFG Gypsy Rebuild

anytime is a good time for some BBQ :)

I used a neutral gel-coat for the deck of my boat from uscomposites, added grey pigment, and then surface wax to the last coat. How does that compare to the Gel coat you are planning to use?

I am partial to the 85HP Johnson for a motor for obvious reasons :)

I am going to coat the deck with gelcoat but will use a dark blue pigment. This will give to time to make up my mind on what to use for a floor covering. I'm not sure what the difference is with the gelcoat, I just know it's very expensive. A light coating of non slip material, such as fine sand will be spread on the last coat. As far as the motor goes, I've been comparing OMC to Mercury. The difference to cubes is amazing. OMC must be more powerful than the Merc for that reason alone. I'm not going to rush into anything, just keeping my options open.

Re: 1978 MFG Gypsy Rebuild

So I've been tossing the idea around of either rebuilding my Merc or buying another one that is working. Iv'e looked at a 70 Merc but buddy couldnt get it started. He also told me it was an '85 but turned out to be an '83, not that 2 years matter. I walked away from that. Then I looked at another motor, a 1989 85hp Evinrude, so I was told. I went to look at it but turned out to be another dud. Actually was a 1979 model. But buddy couldn't get the trim to work or even turn over. There is a lot of junk out there. I just wish that when people advertised their outboards that they have them ready to sell. I won't buy one without hearing it run and testing the compression. People can be weird.

I'm kind of leaning on tearing mine down and having it professionally rebuilt. At least I know what I will have. I think too much.... My brain hurts.....

Have you done a compression check? If it's more than 110 on all cylinders then I'd say rebuild her

Re: 1978 MFG Gypsy Rebuild

I have one cylinder pushing 100. The other two are okay, 120 each. I think that's the numbers. It runs but very rough. I can get it done for 85 dollars per cylinder for machine work, boring, etc. Then 140 per cylinder for new pistons, rings, etc. That's tore down and rebuild as well.

If it's an 85HP, it's not an '89. The 85s became 90s in '81.

Re: 1978 MFG Gypsy Rebuild

Okay, long time no see. I was hoping to have a big old update saying blah blah blah, boat is coming along, fiberglass out the ying yang, blah blah blah. Am I upset? Heck yes. The last two springs here have been great. Hot sunny days, etc. This year...just sucks. Cold, windy, cloudy, wet. I have my boat stored three hours from here. The trouble is the snow here is gone. The snow there...still a ton. I can't get my boat out and am so antsy. It's been a long dirty winter, but the spring is been cold, wet and just gross. However, a little sunshine today.. So I've been advertising in our local Kijiji, looking for outboard motor between 60 and 90hp. I've looked a lot of junk. I did see one 60 Merc, I think it was early 80's . But same as mine, one cylinder was low on compression. I've been toiling between buying another motor or rebuild mine. Some guy calls me a month ago, says he has a 1976 Merc 85 hp. I was so excited. Just what I was looking for. He called me, we talked. He gave me the history of the motor, yaddy yaddy yadda. I didn't here from him again. It was like a carrot hanging in front of me. WTH? Anyway, time goes buy, Kijiji ads out the ying yang, looking at junk. Out of the blue, buddy with the 85 Merc emails me, apologizing for the delay. He's been busy, blah blah blah. Anyway I go down today and look at it. Compression is 130 on 2 cylinders and 125 on the other 2. Not great but pretty well even. It does need a tune up but runs quite respectively. Anyway, I bought it and it now sits in the back of my truck waiting to be delivered to it's new home. It has all the power trim pumps, hoses, etc. Not sure if it works, but will soon see. It has a new electrical system, starter, solenoid, etc. I just thought I would share this. I hope everyone is having better luck..lol.

Thanks Wood. It's always good to hear from you as well. This has been a very long winter and I am so behind. I expected to be just about complete with my project. We get all the crappy weather from the U. S and western Canada. This year has been an exception. Crazy stuff. lol. But I will be okay. I need my fix..

Re: 1978 MFG Gypsy Rebuild

Sorry to hear 'bout the nasty weather hanging around...it is already unbearably hot and sticky down these parts, so I guess we can never be totally happy...
However, very glad to hear you scored what sounds like a nice Merc...5 psi compression difference is absolutely nothing to worry about...so many factors go into getting an accurate compression reading that those 5 psi could disappear with some running time and properly tuned and balanced fuel and ignition...
Hope your weather turns for the better soon...:)

Re: 1978 MFG Gypsy Rebuild

Thanks GT. I'm sure it will be aight. I'm just getting a bit of cabin fever. I think the motor is a good one. New plugs are in store and probably carb kits. It runs very nice and I'm very happy with it. I think you are right, once I get it going on a steady basis, things will probably be better. I will do another compression check at the end of the season and see what I get.

On the weather side, I wish it was hot and sticky here. I love the hot weather. We just don't get enough.
