Re: 1978 MFG Gypsy Rebuild
Okay, long time no see. I was hoping to have a big old update saying blah blah blah, boat is coming along, fiberglass out the ying yang, blah blah blah. Am I upset? Heck yes. The last two springs here have been great. Hot sunny days, etc. This year...just sucks. Cold, windy, cloudy, wet. I have my boat stored three hours from here. The trouble is the snow here is gone. The snow there...still a ton. I can't get my boat out and am so antsy. It's been a long dirty winter, but the spring is been cold, wet and just gross. However, a little sunshine today.. So I've been advertising in our local Kijiji, looking for outboard motor between 60 and 90hp. I've looked a lot of junk. I did see one 60 Merc, I think it was early 80's . But same as mine, one cylinder was low on compression. I've been toiling between buying another motor or rebuild mine. Some guy calls me a month ago, says he has a 1976 Merc 85 hp. I was so excited. Just what I was looking for. He called me, we talked. He gave me the history of the motor, yaddy yaddy yadda. I didn't here from him again. It was like a carrot hanging in front of me. WTH? Anyway, time goes buy, Kijiji ads out the ying yang, looking at junk. Out of the blue, buddy with the 85 Merc emails me, apologizing for the delay. He's been busy, blah blah blah. Anyway I go down today and look at it. Compression is 130 on 2 cylinders and 125 on the other 2. Not great but pretty well even. It does need a tune up but runs quite respectively. Anyway, I bought it and it now sits in the back of my truck waiting to be delivered to it's new home. It has all the power trim pumps, hoses, etc. Not sure if it works, but will soon see. It has a new electrical system, starter, solenoid, etc. I just thought I would share this. I hope everyone is having better luck..lol.
