Re: 1978 Starcraft Holiday 18 Rebirth

Made some progress the last couple days. Filled in all the old snap holes on the tops of the gunwales, have a few more larger ones Im still thinking on where the PO had drilled 4 1/4" holes and then decided to move whatever it was over a half inch. So once I get that figured out the top and splashwell should be ready for a coat of rusto.

Tonight I got the vinyl on one of the side panels, came out pretty good. This vinyl I got off fleebay seems to be pretty nice and has a good stretch to it. I decided to not put any padding under it cause I figure all it does is trap water and the whole plush squishy look doesnt do it for me. What I discovered is by not going with the padding you can see every imperfection in the wood, the only spot that I dont like is right where the seat will be, so oh well, its not really that bad and ya wont see it anyways. Im going to make sure the other panel is really smooth before I do that one.

Side panel looks great from here glad to see the boat didn't end up in the garage sale:) Main reason I won't let the wife have one is she always manages to sell some of my valuable stuff instead of her junk :D

Panel looks great. Congrats also on making garage sale signs that people can actually read :D Morons around here practically hang printer paper on signposts with letters drawn in pencil.

Quick update....... inside trim pieces are all covered in vinyl now. Got all the teak pieces sanded down, was happy with the way they cleaned up. Working on rebuilding the dash now.

One piece sanded and one not.

That rail does look brand new.

I got so distracted by the led lights that I didn't notice you tore the dash area down :)

Well I havent been completely slacking lately. I have all the interior side panels covered now and my neighbor across the street covered the seat boxes I had built.

Pile of interior stuff.....

Have been getting ready to paint the topsides of the boat now, holes are JB'd and everything is sanded nice and smooth. Going to lay down the roller this time and use a spray gun. I havent sprayed anything before so I hope it turns out decent. Im ready to go but with the hot and humid weather and now rain Ive been putting it off. How concerned with the humidity should I be?

My redneck paint booth. :facepalm::p

Re: 1978 Starcraft Holiday 18 Rebirth

I look like a smurf, nothing like a paint thinner wipe down. Well here is my first attempt at using a spray gun. It went pretty good except for the garage breaker tripping because of the compressor a couple times during each coat and me having to yell for the wife to flip it back on. Mirror like finish....... not really, but Im sure it looks 100 times better than if I would have rolled it on. I'll see once it drys and I roll it outside to see how many thin spots I have but I gave it a good three coats.

Incase anyone is curious what I was spraying it was Rusto Marine navy with some of the hull paint to lighten it up, about 10-15% xylene and a shot of magic hardner.

Looks pretty darn Professional to me!! I think you'll be pleased with the durability of your Painting formula. I use Rustoleum, with Valspars hardener and Acetone. I have always had very good results.

Re: 1978 Starcraft Holiday 18 Rebirth

Thanks guys. Can't wait to start putting it back together now.

Well I pulled it out yesterday into the sunlight and the bow wasn't looking too hot. It had hardly any shine to it. So after some advice from my uncle I put one more heavy coat with the paint thinned out a lot more. It still ain't perfect but looks a lot better than it did.

It looks fantastic Charlie and what a well thought out colour scheme... she'll look like she's at WOT in the garage by the time you've finished! :D

Re: 1978 Starcraft Holiday 18 Rebirth

Thanks Triton.

Finished up making the teak all shinny, came out a little darker than I was thinking but looking at the boat in my avatar there its pretty dark, but happy with the way it came out. So I got that put back on this morning, last night I glued the carpet in the side wall storage pocket things and a couple other items mounted back on. Excited to mount the windshield back on so it starts looking normal again.

Picture of my teak on the bow (it just screams late 70's...... I love it).
