Re: 1978 Venture Phase V bass boat, new deck and transom - first timer
I keep stressing about the cap fitting, and could not come up with a way to check it without reattaching (no way I was doing that). So I came up with this. I laid out the wood so it over hangs the cap, then I put two brads in each intersection ( no twist that way), then put the small vertical blocks to match the hull shape, with my alignment point being a piece of wood fit to hang off the center of the bow. It fit perfectly on the hull, allowing for the thickness cap edge.
It took all of 40 minutes to construct and test, and I had confidence to go ahead full speed. Then I was grinding, pb'in, and glassin everything in the shop. I poured foam, and cut with a long sawzall metal blade. The long ones will flex like crazy and mine didn't kink, I was impressed. However in hindsight I thought this would save time, but now I'm not so sure. There'd be way less waste drilling holes, which I will do on the deck. That foam is solid though, I could walk on it with no compression - and that's the 2lb foam.
Then I PB'd and screwed down the sole to both the edges and stringers.
Prior to that, I screwed it down, then went back and filled all the holes with silicone. I also coated the screws by dipping them in the tube, no mess. A slow speed keeps from slinging it off, and it seemed to go with the screw in the wood better that way. Who knows, it's getting glassed over anyway, but why not.

The cap check rig.
I put a layer of csm on the underside and left the overhang mostly dry, I want to wet out the wood real good in the morning and at the same time PB the edges, then come in with tabbing and csm after the PB kicks a little.
