YES! Just got back from UPS with all my supplies to finish. I called UPS four times last night hoping someone would pull the right strings to get my packages and they all said the same thing, not until Friday.

So I just drove over there this morning and acted like they were supposed to be there now, and they went and got em. Took 40 minutes, but way better waiting until than Friday. Off to the grind I go!

Glad you got the goods!

I keep stressing about the cap fitting, and could not come up with a way to check it without reattaching (no way I was doing that). So I came up with this. I laid out the wood so it over hangs the cap, then I put two brads in each intersection ( no twist that way), then put the small vertical blocks to match the hull shape, with my alignment point being a piece of wood fit to hang off the center of the bow. It fit perfectly on the hull, allowing for the thickness cap edge.

It took all of 40 minutes to construct and test, and I had confidence to go ahead full speed. Then I was grinding, pb'in, and glassin everything in the shop. I poured foam, and cut with a long sawzall metal blade. The long ones will flex like crazy and mine didn't kink, I was impressed. However in hindsight I thought this would save time, but now I'm not so sure. There'd be way less waste drilling holes, which I will do on the deck. That foam is solid though, I could walk on it with no compression - and that's the 2lb foam.

Then I PB'd and screwed down the sole to both the edges and stringers.

Prior to that, I screwed it down, then went back and filled all the holes with silicone. I also coated the screws by dipping them in the tube, no mess. A slow speed keeps from slinging it off, and it seemed to go with the screw in the wood better that way. Who knows, it's getting glassed over anyway, but why not.

I put a layer of csm on the underside and left the overhang mostly dry, I want to wet out the wood real good in the morning and at the same time PB the edges, then come in with tabbing and csm after the PB kicks a little.

She's starting to look like a boat again!

By Silicone you mean 3m 5200?

I hear that silicone does not work as well as the 5300.

I just used silicone. I've never used 5200, but from what I hear it's great, but the tops of the stringers are also coated in pb and then screwed down, so I'm not worried about using silicone for screw holes there. The way I'm thinking is...if that is what screws me, get it, I'll be real surprised.

It all looks great! Good Job!

Re: 1978 Venture Phase V bass boat, new deck and transom - first timer

I got great news today, the new tenant isn't moving in until Saturday - next week. She had no problem with me being there until Friday, YES! I was stressing, I don't like being in that much of a rush. It's still a rush, but another week is fantastic.

I spent the morning getting my tag so I can tow it outta there. At the time I thought I had to get it today to tow it this weekend. The tag process involved having an officer come out and run the vin on the trailer. Which came back to a 78 Tracker trailer from FL, not stolen. A good sign. Got my tag, $12. The guy was great, he'd been thinking about buying and restoring a wooden row boat, I pitched iboats and had him taking notes. His wife hates me already.

I laid 1708 on the inside of the stringers and tabbed the bow in after grinding off excess PB. I made a fillet with pb, but I did screw up. I should have mounted the pieces that connect the transom to the stringers at the same time, but didn't. So I had to suit up and grind out the fillet, the bond was excellent, amazing stuff and hard to get out. It produced a lot of dust. Which got me thinking...fumed silica or cabosil is seriously caustic, so I'd advise that if you are going to grind use extreme caution, with clean-up too. I'm already guilty of not being as cautious as I should be. Maybe I'll just use talc, or wood flour...

Back to it...I got them mounted, pb'd and clamped to the stringers and transom.

I laid csm over the sole that ran up the sides of stringers, but not over. I'm going to do two layers over tomorrow, but probably should have done one then.

Don't use talc or wood flour. Poly resin Is porous and with the addition of talc or wood flour it will absorb water much more readily than when using cabosil.

I've gone through 10qts of it already, and need more asap to continue. Anyone know of any creative sources in a non-boat town? Maybe some other industry uses it???

Good news today, the tenant might let me use the garage until the end of April.... I'm still shooting for being done by the end of next week if at all possible, I want it done.

Here's a list of the supplies I've ordered so far. I haven't used all this yet, but it's been purchased. I know I left out a bunch of stuff, but it's most of it. I'm out of resin, 15 gallons so far an no deck glassing at all yet. I got about half the deck in, then ran out. I ordered another 5 gallons last night, but I won't get it until 8am Tuesday. A trick I've learned is if you need it fast, have them ship to the UPS center (if it's close to you), and hold there. I get it at 8am, instead of delivered at 2-3pm or 6-7pm - never know. The super saver overnight they shipped yesterday arrived at 9am, and made my day.

Progress!!

I think I'm done with all the glass work in the hull. Finally. 22 gallons of resin so far. I think I'll will need another gallon to do some work on the cap, and for holes in the transom to make PB.

I really can't believe how much the sides have stiffened up. They had about 4" of play with everything out, and now that's about 1-2". My template still fit, so I think it'll be ok, I'm hoping to get the cap back in place tomorrow.

Ha Ha, no way...you'll be done in no time. I'm getting the hang of it for sure. I'm gonna miss it after it's over, I like glassing, kinda fun.
