Cradle looks Great! Shop Vac filter will clog but you can make a filter box out of a cardboard box and it works great. Get a box big enough for the vac to fit in and cut a hole in one side for the hose fitting to fit. Seal it with duct tape around the hose. Cut out the outer three sides to openings just shy of the dimensions for air conditoning filter. Tape 3 filters to the inside or outside of the box with Wide masking tape. Remove the filter from the Vac, close up the box and go to town. the exhaust from the vac will be captured by the filters and they will last longer and can be removed easily and the dust knocke out of them to be reused. I've seen it done and it works great.

Hi bear....

Im going to take some time to do some back reading here...its been kinda busy today...so it might take a bit...

But on the color match......that yellow is the only one that i could not get.....yep...its tough.

The problem is that if you go too dark...to lighten it up....you need white...so the yellow pales and the batch ruined..you have to start all over. you can sometimes bring it back by adding a lot more clear or neutral. then your base yellow again......but mostly...once its too dark or pale...its done.
I did over 250 different matches of that color....I got close.....but didn't nail it.

If you want it bang on...order the gell form a tinitng company....it is really spendy....about a hundred bux a quart.
It will come in your boats color. since it is the bottom you are

Since its on the keel....if you are not to worried about close or not.....you can mix it your self.

When you grind the gellcoat.... just dab your color mix on the area.....you will see instantly how close you are.

Ok.....now as far as the pigments.....in canada we have a different system....so im not sure of the names of the colors you are using...
But neutral of marble clear gell is what you start with.....
I had very close results with the clear....not the neutral.

two things to watch when you are mixing.......a drop of pigment changes the color a great deal....so be very very cautious with how much you add...
after you add the drop.....use a egg beater in a drill to mix the color.....and mix it for over 3 minits after each color change.

you will think the pigment is fully mixed......but even after a full minit on high speed, you might see a full strand of un mixed pigment in the pail......it really takes alot to blend it....!!!

Cradle looks good. I bet that was pretty time consuming trying to get all the angles and such to line up but well worth it for the extra support.

That's a cool idea, I still need to think about your instructions, but I think I get it. The entire vacuum is in the box, and the filters are on the outside... Hope to start grinding this weekend... Still need to build my dust tent! Maybe I can camp out in the garage in it!

Thanks for checking out my build dude...

I'm not to concerned about a spot on match, just to get close is all. myself and iboats gang are the only ones who will know anything... I still have to remove keel stringer, transom, and grind the inner hull before I work on the bottom/keel repair, so it may be a few weeks.

While inspecting the bottom, I noticed there are what appears to be stress cracks only in the gel-coat (very tiny) all alone the keel. Also a few areas along the bottom that look like spider web cracks in the gel... again very tiny diameter... kinda like a crack in an egg shell but if's still perfectly intact.. Is this something to address? should I grind and repair? Part of me thinks I should gel the entire bottom?

When you mention "When you grind the gel coat.... just dab your color mix on the area.....you will see instantly how close you are." Are you saying when using my grinder to prep surface for glass repair, make a test batch of colored gel, and dab on the area, to see how it matches?

Not much progress... Still working on outer supports on my cradle. I'm kinda cashed from my push the last few weeks... I hope to get grinding soon, maybe Sunday?

Also getting my list of supplies together for a UC Composite order...

Not the best but here's a drawing of how to make a "Box Filter" for your shop vac. Cut out the three sides and masking tape Air filters to the openings. remove the vac filter and put the vac in the box, stick the hose thru an opening and tape it closed. Turn the vac on so you can just plug it in to turn it on and voila'.

Question:

I'm testing my outer cradle supports, and when walking in a few areas close to the bow, I notice a slight cracking when I put my weight on a few spots. This is about 8" out from the keel ~ 3' aft of the bow... The glass skin seems very thin in this area... Is creaking cracking normal at all????? I was thinking of reinforcing this entire area with a layer of 1708 before I bed the stringers? Comments?

That is the area with the most keel damage isn't it? When looking at your pictures that was the area I was talking about reinforcing with a few layers of glass...the beaching has thinned it down some...Friscoboater reinforced his keel there and did it in a video, in his thread, I would say yes, reinforce it!

A grinder with a 24 grit is the fastest way to remove gellcoat....but you have to watch that you dont dig in to the hull. so go slo bear.

when you grind the gell....you will have an interface area.....on the edge of the old gell. this is where the old gell is untouched...and you have ground to the glass...its the area of gellcoat in between.
that area is where you can really tell if you have matched the color or not....it is immeadate when you dab some gell on the uncovered glass....

the old glass has a color.....the surface gellcoat has a polished color....and the un polished edge of the gell has a color...your new fresh wet gell...will stand out.....the more it blends in with the interface and the old gell...is where you are with your match.
if you dont care about the exact match......then mix the stuff your self.....a gallon of tinted gell can cost as much as a full 30 gallons of resin !!!

the spider cracks (crazing) on the keel are most likely due to the gellcoat being too thick in that area as that is the lowest part of the mold when they spray it...

its your call if you want to fix them or not.....it will only allow a miniscule amount of water to get to the fiberglass hull barrier.

however....if you are going all this way on the re build.....why not go all the way?

Hey gang,

I don't really like to talk about my personal life, but sometimes it happens... My fiance' and are separating after 4.5 years due to, well lets just say we have different goals for the future, and our paths have taken different directions... I'm super bummed... We're still going to be friends, and I guess we'll see what happens down the road... She moved out this weekend, and it kinda took the wind out of my sails...

Anyhow... back to the Imperial...

I finished the cradle outer supports and the dust tent... I sure hope it helps keep the dust inside the boat for the most part... In the garage I plastic wrapped my fishing poles, the Volvo DPS outdrive, snowblower, and my Johnson... That still makes me laugh...

So now let the grinding commence!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The tearout is almost done, the cradle looks solid, and the dust dome is eerily disturbing and familiar...:facepalm:

like the dust tent, that should minimize your mess...sorry to hear about the lady friend, but whats meant to be will be, how cliche! I have your dogs brutha over here...I always say take my wife...but leave mah dog alone!
