Hey gang,

I really like glassing... It's a mess and stinks, but it's very relaxing... Here are some pics of the bilge finished side of the transom from yesterday... Very solid!

Imperial%252021JAN2012%2520089.jpg

Today I flipped it over and ground down the excess glass from yesterday with 36 grit, and prepped the surface for glassin'....

This time and from now on, I'll have my work area more organized and staged, instead of wingin' things like I did yesterday. I had 4- 500 mL resin containers, and 4 MEKP syringes locked and loaded! Also a barrage of cleaning supplies on standby... This made the glassin process way more enjoyable!!!!!!!

This is 2 layers 1.5 oz CSM on the skin side of transom... BTW I used the chip brush and glass roller! Made a huge difference with bubble removal!

I'd like to do more glassing this weekend, but Jackson needs a walk, and some Bear time... He's been such a good dog while I'm in the garage glassing, and tinkering for hours... I roasted a turkey today, so I'm sure he's expecting some of the kill with his dinner!

Have a great rest of the weekend!

I concur with the others....looks amazin'....

I know what you mean about your best friend....mine knows when I am heading out to work. Jumps for the door to tag along. Then sits in yard while I work. If I take a break, he comes right over for a visit.

Good to have the company.

Anxiously awaiting more updates.....keep it up

That is one nice transom you have there Bear!!

How is the box vacuum working for you? I tried to use one but I don't think that I have the right kind of shopvac. It is okay though I got my primary grinding done now and the boat cleaned up.

Hey Glenn thanks!

Benn looking for some updates on your build brutha...

The WOG vacuum works great! Make sure you remove the filter inside the vac... The box will be filled with dust and crap, but the vacuum will remain strong...

Re: 1979 Imperial

Hey gang,

I was all stoked for the weekend! I was gunna PB my sweet transom in... NOT!

I was test fitting it tonight and somehow it's warped ~ 1/2" so sitting in place there's a huge gap between the skin and the transom... ( it's not in backwards either )

I laid it on top of two vertical 2 x 4's and can clearly see the bend. In a last ditch effort before starting over, I parked my GMC Yukon on it, in hopes it can bend back... I dunno, my glassin seem kinda tough.... as Jas says! RAT FARTS!

I'm deflated...................................... :(

Re: 1979 Imperial

All may not be lost, is the 1/2" gap run top to bottom of the ply transom?

If it starts low enough to not interfere with the cap going back on, go deep w/ the PB across the 1/2" gap & clamp w/ just enough pressure to insure contact & but to not warp fiberglass boat skin.

Re: 1979 Imperial

The apex of the gap seems to be in the middle from top to bottom of the transom. I can clamp the skin to contact the top, and the cap fits, but the skin will be slightly warped toward the bow if I PB it together... But I really hope your idea would work form me brutha. The xtra deep PB did come to mind, but I just wasn't sure?

Re: 1979 Imperial

As long as your careful to not draw the 'glass skin into the cup in the ply wood, it's just extra PB, but I don't see how it's a problem as long as its well PB'd & no voids......

Re: 1979 Imperial

Pics Please!!!! I can't SEE the problem

Oh wait... I re read your post and now I understand. Ok. This migh work for you.
Place the transom between 2 saw horses lay some towels on top of it. Soak em in BOILING HOT WATER and then set some HEAVY weight in the middle. Keep it HOT. Keep an eye on it and don't let it warp the other direction. It MIGHT delam the the glass not sure.

Re: 1979 Imperial

Man, that stinks... And that transom was so puuuuuurdy too --- looked like caramel cake! I'm with Coonie (that's jb)... all may not be lost.... Since you have got an outboard and the you are not needing super-precise specs (for a key-hole, etc...), all you are after is strength back there (for the weight and push of the o/b)... Thus, I would see about just just flattening it out with planer/sander, etc... and then if there is still a gap, fill it in with pb.... (of course, that sounds like a bit of work and it may be easier just to start over). I wouldn't clamp it - not only would it look bush league, but it would eventually want to delam on you as it fought to go back to its original (out of the mold) shape...that's why I had to cut mine out and start over...

Just to be sure.... you are sure the wood is warped and you are not dealing with a curved transom, right?

If its any consolation, I have been working on my transom since November... seriously, its been that long.... So, it sucks to be you right now, but probably sucks worse to be me..
