Re: 1979 Imperial

Hey Gang,

I plan on putting a belly tank in my boat. I've never owned a 2 stroke... Are there any disadvantages when it comes to filling and mixing oil/fuel with an internal tank? I'm thinking adding the oil first then the fuel, the oil should go into solution easily, and I shouldn't have any solubility or phase separation issues right?

Hey bear ... sorry I can't help you with the tank questions but the keel repair sure looks good. Great job!

Re: 1979 Imperial

Hey gang,

So I'm trying my best to do anything, even the smallest thing each day on the boat... So I decided to try some fairing/sanding. I used mico-balloons, cabisil and resin kicked at 1.25% MEKP, ended up being a tad thicker than mayo. Well less is more for sure, stuff is very hard... I was using 100 grit by hand, and wished I had some 60... I gobbed the filler on kinda thick, and that required more sanding... I'm learning... I think for small areas I like sanding by hand, but I'm sure I'll dabble with power sanders at some point.

Any comments on my fuel mix post?

Peace!

That turned out nice, was it a tough job to sand it?

Not that I know, but wouldn't the oil not mix so well? I would think it would stick along the length of the hose, but maybe not so much.

Re: 1979 Imperial

If you're good w/ math, 50 - 1, based on the amount of fuel you add. Mixes better when oil is added 1st, then always fill in 5gal increments:cool: (am I daft, that is the amount of fuel a 'regular' small 2-stroke oil bottle gets added to, correct???)

Tougher to gauge amount of fuel & oil that's left in the tank so ya know just how much fuel you can add, which gives you the amount of oil you'll needed, but yep, doable:).

Brutha Troop,

Sorry I wasn't very specific, I edited my post... But yes it was tough to sand (with 100 grit)

I'm thinkin the oil would be soluble enough, and any coating the filler tube would dissolve when I added fuel.

The fairing looks good.

Is poly resin workable 'green' just before it fully kicks like auto bondo is? To knock down the high spots only, then let it kick before the final sand down............

I have a 30 gallon internal tank in my boat. I bought a SeaSense mixing bottle at Bass Pro that has graduated scales for different mixing ratio's (50:1 for my Yamaha outboard). I fill it for the indicated number of gallons that I add to my tank and pour it in through the gas fill line.

The oil mixes pretty thoroughly immediately and 2 minutes of driving around either on the water or on the trailer and it's mixed for sure. So you're overthinking that part. That being said, I always fill my boat with 5 gallon jerry cans that I add the appropriate amount of oil to before I head off to the gas station. A mixing bottle like Shortcircuit mentioned above is a must have. Wal-Mart usually has them.

(if you plan to go this route, and you haven't seen any of my previous posts on the subject, these cans are the bees knees because they don't have that horrible safety crap on them that all the regular new cans have: http://pitstopusa.com/i-5083914-vp-racing-fuels-square-5-gallon-motorsports-container-red.html & http://pitstopusa.com/i-5083906-vp-racing-fuels-deluxe-filler-hose-14-only-fits-vp-brand-jugs.html I have 4 of these.)

Brutha Bear,

I have been outa touch for a few and come back to find the Cobalt is headed to a new home...bit of a bummer, but you gotta do what you gotta do...I just hope the new owners realize they are getting an Iboats certified premium fun machine!

The OB sounds sweet, can't wait to hear mine again...I am soooo jealous...

Your bottom fairing looks pro as always...this is my goal this weekend, also...

Nope...tried it and failed, many, many moons ago...tends to rip and shred in a very ugly way...

I agree with EZ, 100%...

I also use the 5 gallon pre-mix method...

If the tank is bone dry, you could also pump a couple of gallons in the tank, then add the oil, then finish topping up...

I also use the sort of, kinda close enough method, too...let me 'splain...since I know my fuel tank is a 17 gallon...say its half a tank down...when I refill, its gonna need approximately 8.5 gallons...most 2-strokes are 50:1, which works out to 2.6 ounces of oil to each gallon of gas...so, 8.5 gallons times 2.6oz. equals 22.1 oz. of oil...I pour the 22.1+/- ounces of oil in then proceed to top up the tank...since two strokes are usually not too finicky about whether they are at 40:1 or 60:1...even if you are a couple of ounces off...mechanically the engine won't suffer...although at 40:1 you would have a few less mosquitos...

Keep up the great work and you and JL will be fishin before you know it...:D

Later,GT

I'm with EZ and GT on the tank issue.

I use 5 gallons cans to get the exact ratio for my engine, never had a problem since I started to use this method. Altough it may take you a long time to fill your tank that way. I would probably opt for Shorcircuit's mixing bottle if it's more convenient, but keeps the right ratio. At any rate, a few waves, or simply the trip from the pump to the lake should be enough to mix it in properly.

Nope it's white like the glass beads... The green is the existing glass I covered... It was tough to sand cause I added to much cabisil I think...

I like the pre-mixed cans o gas idea also! Thanks Brutha EZ!

Brutha GT! Selling the Cobalt was a trip... The new owners said their keeping "Jackson Lee" as the name... After they met him, they just thought it fit the boat... Thier family is having a blast with it... I do miss it terribly, but know it was the right desision, and gives me motivation to finish the Imperial. Thanks for checking in, and for the fuel advice dood!

Re: 1979 Imperial

Hey bretheren,

Just a quick update... I've been sanding and fairing, and have the hull taped off ready to paint the bottom this weekend... I'll post some pics ASAP!

I also ordered this! http://cook-mfg.net/cart/index.php?..._id=14&zenid=d7def393a50eea70017d4cf0ce03b027 Should be here on Monday! I figure instead of finding the stock unit for my Johnson, this will give me some offset, reliability, and more precision with fine trim... Heck rebuilt stock units were close to the same price... I've also ordered my keel Guard, and belly tank!

Oops, my bad, 'green' was meant to describe the not quite kicked resin, not the color like Kermit.:D

Same term applies to concrete, it has not yet fully cured when you remove the forms & remove the high spots on a slab. That is working the concrete while it is still 'green'.

Glad to hear Jackson Lee's namesake will be keeping his name post-adoption.

Have a great weekend. Stay cool....
