Re: 1979 Sea Nymph FM 161 resto

Painfull week with removing all the goop and paint from hull.

Thanks to H2o for recommending the Kleen Strip and the kling wrap helped a lot. I noticed after applying the stipper some of the heavy black goop started to loosen up a bit. Checked out the can of strip and says takes off epoxy also so after some further applications it did help, but still had to chip and sand.

Seems like North America is getting its fair share of rain lately, so had to clean up garage majhal to get boat partially in so could get some work done.

Some progress. I relaize pics of stripping are boring:

Here comes rain so half in garage:

Done:

I know there is a small section I missed, lower left....

So finally at the point to get some Gflex epoxy on the keel and other seams. First time using it but will tell you one thing for sure it is easier without a day after headach and some shakes !

You only get a 4 oz jar of resin and hardner so was curious how far this would go. I am using syringes for application.

Procedure is to heat up a section with a heat gun, apply the epoxy to the seam and come back and heat again to assist cure.

So mix up 2 oz and fill 5 syringes. Heat up first strip, grab syringe with other hand, start applying, cool it seeps into seam neatly, continue on but what the heck...syringe point is now crooked and flow has increased.............

Dummy, while watching this stuff seep, I had heat gun blowing on syringe.....melted a bit. So went to the heat first, put down gun, apply epoxy, put down and heat again.

I over filled the syringes so plungers go in deep enough and one actually popped out so lost a whole syringe full. Yikes.

So bottom line is went really well and easy, once I got my act in gear. Did whole keel and transom seam with 2 oz. and still have 3 oz of resin and hardener left.

Here is hull seam with some flex in. Hard to see:

Mucho product left:

I like this stuff as it seeps into seam if not a good seal and if a good seal it forms a good fillet.

That's looking good SG and the bottom is just that. Once flipped on the trailer you won't see it again as long as the repairs hold water tight.

I like your idea of having the patch on the outer hull. Just imagine with the weight of decks and occupants inside how much force will be applied pushing outward on the hull. Once all pulled apart and bulkheads removed, these old tin boats really try to go out of shape. I had to use a ratchet strap to pull my boat sides in when putting the end caps on the transom otherwise they wouldn't line up to the existing holes.

I can't wait to start stripping paint again, thanks for the painful reminder of how tough a job it really is. My resto buddy busted his hump helping me get that job done, I cant imagine having to do it by myself. We wore out a few wire wheels and a drill too.

Looking to finish up the sealing, flip boat, water test and see the results. Maybe will be a test case and not use Gluvit.

I did find that you can use the Gflex even if boat is right side up as long as use a heat gun to partially cure after application. thats per West Systems. Looks like will have quite a bit left over for those other epoxy repairs that always come up.

This is starting to feel good as can get patch on, transom in, get engine mounted and start reassembly.

Wow... SG... That hull has been working you, man!

Sounds like you are turning the corner after lots of hard work!! Should be good as new when you are done.

Lt PMC

Thanks for stopping by, you are certainly rockin your SN. Very Nice

Small update here:

Cant express how impressed I am with this gflex. Of course proof will be in the proverbial leak test coming up.... but finished up sealing all seams today and still have just almost half of the product remaining.

Like all products procedures, good learning curve, melting tips of the syringes and also how to burp the syringe instead of shoving out all that well stirred product, proper trimming of the syringe tip, thumb cramps (carpal ?) but still saying worth the effort and cost.

Probably this pic wont do much but it is what it is:

So have to put brain in different gear to plan ahead a bit. Got the 3 patches cut out, trimmed, filed and ready to drill mount holes.

Bad pic but got a bit happy with days progress:

Geez, actually got a seat out to check out type, size etc. so could order a new base and post.

Retired buddy is coming in to help fiilp boat, install patches, H2o test....stay tuned if of interest. I am thinkin of those JAS vrooom sounds in near future

That G Flex stuff looks like a great way to fix those leaky rivets from the outside, not many products have success on that side of the hull. I read up on the stuff at their website and it sounds impressive. Now lets hope for zero drip leak test!

I saw a guy today with a 16 foot Lund, complete with a hull sprayed down in splotches with that Flex Seal crap, ya know the guy on TV that screams at you with his "handy man in a can" and boat that has a screen door on the bottom. So I ask the guy how'd that work out for you? His reply was "not worth a SH*T, still leaks like a sieve". I chuckled inside a bit and told him how he should go about repairing it. After our talk he understood that the cheap and easy way is never the right way to fix a leaky tin boat.

Well some progress but not sure if the ole computer isup to it....browser compatability pblms, script pblms, blah blah blah... thinking might be time for that lethal bullet to the cpu.

Lets see how this goes.

H2o:

Truer words were never spoken "Cheap and easy" doesnt have any place on these forums.

Ok so that post worked.

So 2 fishing and personal buds showed up to give a hand. Needed to wrestle the hull a bit. One of the fellas brought his brother whom we hadnt seen in a while so that was great, the weather held almost all day and got a lot done. You will notice the brother I refer to is going to be the obvious supervisor.

So firstly got the hull up on some sawhorses. Someone had to be underneath as I am using SS fasteners instead of rivets both for the bad (loose) rivets I drilled out and for the patch.

Wow, records being set all over North America. We just set record 18 days straight of rain, but childs play compared to Toronto and rest of NA.

Rain is making it tough to work on boat so got it half in garage and thought I was being shade tree ingenious:

Braced sides of hull with some horses and climbed in to work and crashed and burned. Horses, tools, chairs flying but rode her out.

Better to move on to smaller stuff for evening me thinks.

So appears the PO was a bit more ingenious than I thought. The hook on his winch strap wouldnt fit into bow eye, as the small spring loaded lock got in way:

So his solution was to take a bastard file to the eye and almost cut it in half:

side one

side two

I am fortunate we have excellent tig welders in shop so they will fill it in and I'll smooth it out. Trim that latch just a bit and back in business.

Good grief.

Wow, that is some horrible weather for boat work. Here for 2 weeks it's been blistering hot and not even bearable to be outside until the sun goes down. 1900 hours and it's still 90!

Anyway... bow eye mayhem! The PO slob of mine pulled the bolts on the bow eye through the hull! I'm not so sure that damage is from being filed though, imagine case hardened steel pulled up tight against aluminum by a winch for years on end and all of the vibration of being towed. Mine was chewed up just the same when it hit the trash bin.

I also didn't like that there was no way to back it up due to the angle of the bolts going through the hull. I filled in the old holes and put on a 1/2" stainless bow eye backed by a sealed up piece of my scrap transom ply. Yeah I could have used a 3/8" eye with washers but... you would pull the whole keel plate off the boat now before it would tear out!

On your previous post, your spectator looks like he should be at a tennis match not a boat restoration!

H2o,

That pic from your resto was burned in my memory banks and have been keeping it as an option.

I appreciate your opinion / review but I am pretty sure the PO used a file to open it up. As I am cleaning it up a half round file fits perfectly into the slots he created.

I admit to being a bit wacked here as would pbly be easier to put in a new SS but somehow this is stuck in my craw. I'll have shop fill it up and see how much effort it takes to file it smooth or how much it really is stuck in my craw.....

Shop cut some SS flanges for backing so it wont come out.

And finally, now that you mention it he does look like a tennis ref. Wish it would have struck me at the time so could have yelled at him.

Probably like everyone else been watching weather forecast and looking pretty darn nice for 10 days so probably time to make some hay while the sun shines eh. (is it make hay or cut hay ?)

But of course the rains gods wouldnt leave dodge without one last blowout. Just about 6 straight hours of steady heavy wet stuff.

Cant believe the basement has remained dry, yet the good old garagemahall did some spitting:

Good I had all the lumber off floor.

So sitting watching the boat fill or as I like to think of it as a leak test:

So she was filling up pretty good, no leaks, and then just like that I watched her tip over and empty:

And then she rights herself. Quite a movie

So today dawns a perfect day..........beauty!

Finish cleaning up garage. Bail out boat. Arranged for a mate to assist putting her back on trailer for tomorrow.

Washed, then sanded all the decking and transom for paint and or varnish.

Got one coat varnish on transom and bow piece.

Good day eh.
