Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

I raised the trailor as high as it would go and got a few gallons of water out lol, then i lifted the boat in the air for awhile but i got tired of holding it lol

If you dont have a jockey wheel on the trailer, prop up the drawbar on a sawhorse or something to keep it that way....

It has a jockey wheel, but its not the original trailor for the boat so when the wheel is all the way extented the water will only drain out of the boat so much

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

I put a floor jack under the front crossmember of my trailer when I need to drain it out, it tilts the boat up about 30*.

You are going to need to find something to cover the boat when you get to the point of installing things back in. Water and UV rays will damage all your nice work, yeah I know, weird, but exposure to the elements will tear up an interior quickly. One of those silver tarps and a PVC/ABS frame to hold it up will work on the cheap, until you can get a good boat cover. I use a piece of 4" ABS pipe to "tent" my cover, but it's only good for rain, it wouldn't handle a snow load the way I have mine built, no snow down here though....

Just wanted to say nice deal! That yamaha does look cherry! So super clean! I agree with the other posts, if you havent, you may want to fog it for storage while you are working.

other than that, looks great! Good going so far!

I'm not sure where it was posted on I-Boats, but I don't think your are supposed to use pressure treated ply anywhere in close or contact w/ the Aluminum hull/transom. Galvonic (sp?) response just like mixed metals. Esp in situations with water..... Just my 0.015$. Not even 2cents worth.....

Here's one of many that come up under an advance search @pressure treated aluminum:

Nope, not correct. Well, maybe 1/2 correct, or 1/2 incorrect. Depends on if you are a glass 1/2 full or glass 1/2 empty type of guy :D

Readily available ACQ treated plywood (green) will eat an aluminum boat and you definitely don't want to use it! BUT, CCA treated plywood is just fine for use with an aluminum boat, it's what the aluminum boat manufacturers use. Problem is, the CCA treated stuff is hard to find since it was banned by the EPA, or some other nasty branch of our government . The Plydek XL I mentioned is CCA treated.

Those guys

I'd stick with regular exterior grade wood, epoxy coated. Most bang for yer buck.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Yup ^^^^ that's exactly why New"B"s on here get so confused.

jpormen, while fishrdan is technically correct, the common treated plywood that YOU will be dealing with is NOT for use in your aluminum boat. That is exactly why I said to use the Arauco Plywood. It has 100% waterproof glue in it's laminations and if you follow the prep and installation procedures outlined here on the forum and do the proper maintenance on it during the course of your ownership, it will last for Decades!!!!! IF you can find Douglas Fir ext. Grade plywood then by all means get it but... it is not commonly carried by the Big Home Store outlets but you might find it at your local Quality Lumber Yards but you will pay a premium price for it. The Arauco plywood @ $35 bucka a sheet will fit your needs just fine and you can WORRY about something else instead of What wood to use for your boat.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Instead of haivng my parents get me wood or paint, they said they would pay half of a carport for me, i found one a tractor supply, just wondeirng if anyone has used it, if so did you like it how did it hold up. Half the reviews everyone loved the other half of the reviews they hated it. i do live in indiana so i know ill have to try to keep the snow knocked off it once it gets some on there.

Hi jpormen, that shelter would be almost perfect for containing the dust when grinding a fiberglass hull. I will head to TSC to see what guage the steel is. THANKS FOR THE LINK.

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

No problem, i really want to work on it over the winter. But i dont got a garage and it should have been snowing here by now so prolly withen two weeks we shoudl have snow every where so i just wanted a shelter to work on the boat, it might be cold but itll be try. Its not intended to be used during snow but as long as u keep it cleaned off it sohuld be fine

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Hey jp,
Just wanted to throw in my 1/2 cent 's worth...

I don't know how much that carport costs, but if you are going to use it for several years after the restore, then it might be worth the investment.

Me, I'd rather throw up just enough shelter to let me keep working on the boat for cheap, and put the bucks into the materials needed to finish the boat...

There are several ways to get some cover over the boat that would allow you to work on it, and wouldn't cost too much...

And when you get it done and splashed, you can put the money into a nice fitted boat cover for storage...

Just thinking out loud...

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

Man, I'd love to come across one of those for free! Don't worry about the problems that smallboatlover has had with his boat as first and foremost his is a fiberglass hull with rotten, wooden stringers supporting the hull and deck that have been replaced incorrectly. A proper restoration of that hull would require a significant amount of money ($1000+) and a lot of hard work, or a HUGE amount of money to a professional. Secondly his has a junk motor with few replacement parts available with an old helicoil in the spark plug hole that's pulled out.
I'm young and cheap, so I would just hold off until warmer weather to work on the boat, but that's just a few months away where I live, and we don't get much rain or snow. I'd also look around for cheap ways to source aluminum sheeting of a good thickness and do the decking with it. Talk about no more rot. It would be prohibitively expensive to just buy it from an aluminum supplier outright, but where there's a will, there's a way! Got an uncle who can weld aluminum and a junk store with a bunch of old road signs for sale? See what I mean? I'm a scavenger. ;)

Re: 1982 AMF crestliner got it for free

That would look pretty awesome to have a bunch or old signs on the floor welded into one peice. I would only be paying 150 for the carport my parents are paying the other half. But i think it would be a good investment. I can store the boat in it year round that would greatly help with nature taking its detruction on it. And if i sell the boat my bad would find somthing to do wtih the car port.

My dad works at a galvanizing plant and they often have 2X4s laying around that he can get me for free. So i can get a few of those to help suppport the carport if i need to and also i can use the used 2x4s to make a motor stand. I know the design that most people use calls for thicker wood. But with a right layout the 2x4s should hold up just fine.

Sounds good. I thought you were gonna say something about your dad helping with parts for the boat, but that would be very bad as galvanized steel and aluminum do not get along well at all!

im definitly wanting to paint the boat, and having that car port would help keep dirt and dust off of the boat.
