Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

Another day of disappointment. Took her out for 3rd sea trial and more of the same carburetor or ignition malfunctions. The gimbel bearing was nice and quiet though. After taking it out and running it 35mph at 2800 rpm's, (Tony), it didn't want to idle. Sprayed carb spray around carb and intake manifold and found no vacuum leaks. Put new points, condenser and rotor in to no avail. Pulled top of carb off and found signs of moisture stain on various parts from where it had been sitting for the last 1-1/2 years. Guess I'll have to tear it down and clean all passages, check balls, etc. Hope I never have to pull the intake manifold off because I noticed some of the bolts heads have rusted away and couldn't even begin to get a wrench on them. Soooo close yet this little petty things are keeping it from being dependable enough to go fishing. Drrrrrrrrraaaaaaaaaat!

P.S. If anyone knows where I can get a used electronic ignition system, at reasonable price, please let me know. Thanks

Must be bad karma I'm dealing with. Went ahead and and pulled that manifold I had hoped that I would never have to deal with. Found nothing wrong in the gasket area. Cleaned everything up, new gaskets, painted, re-installed with new SS bolts and set timing. Same problem with idling. Tomorrow I'll rebuild the carb. Seems to have a sticking power valve and the passages may have corroded from sitting around for a year and a half. When I removed the fuel filter there was quite a bit of debris in it. Not a huge amount but enough to be suspect. Also think I'm going to add some "Marvel Mystery Oil" to the fuel tanks.

Rebuilt the card today and now runs smooth as silk "in the driveway!" I'll take it out for sea trial #4 tomorrow and see how it does wot and if it will start dieing on me after that I'm going to put .070" jets in it from the other carb I have. The ones in it now at .069". If I do that does anyone know if I also have to change the metering rods that go down their center? It was scaly on needles and power piston. Polished everything up with 0000 steel wool.

Well what can I say? They were reported as I saw them. Going out tomorrow for another sea trial and see what it's like. What do you think the numbers should be for my motor/prop combo?

Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

I am cruising at 30 MPH @ 3600 RPM's.......

32 MPH @ 2200 RPM just can't be..........speed and tach need to be verified.
Speed w/ GPS if possible and maybe a shop tach for the RPM's....

Those numbers just don't seem possible and they are kinda important to make sure you're set-up correctly.

Hey Tony. Your right! I checked the tach and it was not set on the back for a V8!! Thanks for the tip. Took it out this morning again and it sure runs a "lot" better after rebuilding the carb. Still not 100% though and am going to add some fuel addative and see if it will straighten up. Here's some pics of this mornings adventure.

It was choppy so I only took it to 30mph and it was about 3400rpm.

That sounds more like it but still a little too good........for that engine and boat based on my numbers.

Again, Ron..........it really looks great! Hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine.

Here's to many trouble free hours!!

Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

Another day of grinding out the bad karma. The motor runs great until I get back to the dock and let it idle or should I say try to get it to idle. Sooooo off came the carb for a third operation and couldn't find any trash, scum or clogged passages. I put it back on this afternoon and still the same thing. Think I'm going to advance the timing and see if the vacuum gage will come up higher than the 15 hgm that I presently have. I had set the timing with a light the other day and could be something with timing. My son started putting the new decals back on I started scrubbing the deck trying to get them looking good once again.

Launching from Gandy Bridge Ramp, Tampa side. Now $5 to launch but I don't mind cause it's a good, clean well maintained ramp.

Got to thinking about my carb rebuild and "maybe" I mal adjusted the float level to high. The specs called for 11/16" and I may have set them to 11/32" as I just realized the guage is in 32nds and not 16ths. Hummmm! Did I shoot myself in the foot once again?

Either SeaFoam or Startron. An $8 bottle of Startron treats 128 gallons. I also buy only Shell or Chevron gas due to the additives. I really feel it makes a difference. I have yet to have a fuel related issue on any of my boats in the last three years when I had to start using this stuff....

Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

Took the carb cover back off and indeed I had mal-adjusted the float. I also noticed that the two center air bleed tubes were not the same length. Upon further investigation one of the tubes was flared out where it had been bottoming out on the carb's bottom. Pounded it back up level with the other and had to take the smallest drill bit I had (.040) and drilled it out. Put it all back together and same old problem. The primary metering rods are "398" and secondary rods are "DA" Gonna put new Autolite AP25 plugs in and see if the "top dead center" matches the distributor #1 position. This little problem has been kicking my "A**" for several days now.
