Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

Just replaced all the plugs with Autolite AP25's and was really surprised to see Chumpions that I removed. The gaps ranged from 28-45 degrees. They did look like they were fireing good though. Checked distributor and is also installed correctly. New points, condenser, rotor, cap and timed to 8 degrees BTD. No vacuum leaks anywhere and has new Fel-Pro intake gaskets, carb kit, and carb base gasket. No bleed over in the primary. Someone please just shoot me and relieve me of my frustration!

LX Kid,

Sorry to hear about your problems, but I have enjoyed reading your thread. The boat really looks good. It?s just a matter of time before she is dialed in. I too am very curious how your 305 performs on a 24? boat. My boat isn?t even close to getting wet, but I would like to get an idea of what kind of speeds I can expect.

Best of luck, Don.

Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

Got out the old carb and rebuilt it to see if I could do any better with it. "WRONG!" It started running just fine then discovered that it was leaking gas between the main body and the throttle plate. Even with new acceleration pump it wouldn't squirt very well. I'm ready to admit "defeat!" Who makes a new carb, not re-manufactured, that is guaranteed to bolt on and work? I've been busting my "b**t" for a week trying to make it reliable and go "FISHING!" Summer will be gone before you know it. My two year restoration project is being held hostage by a Rock Q-Jet!

Thanks Don. I try to post as many pictures as able to keep the thread interesting. Do you have a restoration thread? What kind and size boat do you have? Ron

Just stick a fork in me cause I'm done. I wanna have some bigger "fish" to fry! If a new carb will make it safe and reiable I'm gonna throw some more money at it. It's time to have a little fun and relaxation. My marine mechanic couldn't fix it and I'm tired of trying.

Ron, just a few thoughts. First, have you taken any compression tests once the motor is warm? Also, have all vacuum lines been checked and re-checked? Did you say you bought a new distributor? How is the vacuum advance working?

It really is frustrating just reading of the driveability problems. Hope something turns up soon!

Also, this is Florida...we can go out all year!!...:)

Well, except last January, where we had ten days below freezing and not above the mid thirty's up here...

I'm convinced both the carbs are lost causes and in need of replaceing. I don't want to fiddle around with a carb that might work now and give me problems out on the water. Safety and reliability are what I have strived for during this restoration.

I went with the Edelbrock 1409 with the spreadbore adapter plate. Also bought the Edelbrock 8143 braided SS fuel line from the fuel pump to carb. Total cost from Advance Auto Parts was $412 and should be here in a couple of hours from their warehouse. Thanks "imported_John_S" for the carb suggestions.

Installed the Edelbrock today and fit is very good. Rain caught me so had to stop work. All I need to do is find a 90 degree fuel pump fitting for the line and improvise the throttle support at the back of the carb. "Tomorrow is surely a brighter day!" I'll get some pics up as soon as possible. (Raining)

Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

This darn fuel/carb situation is killing me. It's fighting me every inch of the way. Put the new fuel line on and the fuel line nut bottoms out before it tightens the fuel line to to the fitting. Back off it came and wrapped a lot of teflon tape around the fuel line so it would pull up tight. Don't like doing it that way but is the only way I could get it to work. "HOWEVER" she sure runs "SWEET" with this new Edelbrock carb on her! Now just gotta figure out how to make a bracket for the throttle cable. Maybe take the carb back off and thread the spare holes in the carb's flange and use bolts to secure it. Here's couple of pics.

hello there you very close, you have to go to a hardware store and get new bolts I have the same issue with my carburetor, go aheah and measure how much longer you need the screws and you will solve that issue.

Not very pretty but is functionally steady. I took the studs out and and used two 2" SS bolts instead. It will work until I find a better way to do it. I had problems and both ends of the new fuel line. Took the fuel line back to the parts house and exchanged it for another but had the same problem. I put lots of teflon tape at both ends and it pulled up tight. Oh, and it will even idle nicely at only 500 rpm. Correct idle speed is 650 rpm!

The parts store did not stock AC plugs and the AP25 were a good sub and are platinum tipped plugs. I could have stuck pop sickle sticks in and they would have been better than Chumpion's! I just never much cared for Chumpion plugs and have had good service out Autolite plugs.
