Re: 1982 GW, 24' Project (UPDATED W/PICS)

ok so when are you testing? can you post some numbers I have the same engine a 228, and Im gettin 28-29 mph on wot 4300, Im using a 3 blade 15 diameter 17 pitch prop, Dont forget to post pics of the fish if you catch any, like i said this way the fishing been Bad i was down on the keys last weekend and we didnt get that much fish....

I'm going out in the morning, sea trial #5, to test the new carb. I won't be fishing though. I've been back in Florida for about five years now and have not been fishing that much cause I don't like sitting on piers. A fellow board member, TriumphRick, took my brothers and I out about 1-1/2 years ago and the fishing bug hit me. Hence my boat restoration project has had a new vigor pending available funds. I'll post some more numbers tomorrow. If I remember I'll take a picture of the tach at 30mph.

Glad to hear you are narrowing things down.

As far as fishing, the FtDesoto ramp is one of the best places to launch to get to some good reefs and deep water quickly. You're GW will be very capable for some runs offshore.

Get your BoatUS or SeaTow membership and a PLB or Epirb and you're good to go!

Keep posting! And have Gene break out some of the 4/0 rigs....;)

You should also check your WOT RPM's to see if you're proped correctly.

Like that 1409.............don't ya........did the vacumm readings come up at all?

Yup! I love that Edelbrock so far. If I can find a safety observer/helper I'm going out this morning for test #5. There's no vaccum post or carb vaccum port on the carb to check it. On the back of the tach it has a select switch for the number of cylinders being used. #3 is for the V8's and that's what I put it on.

"SUCCESS" Took it out this morning and she ran smooth as silk and idled perfectly every time! Now I'm happy! Ran it up to 4000rpm @ 34mph. I didn't want to push the rpm's any more than that at this time. Hurrah for Edelbrock!

Now I have to start putting all the creature comforts in her. I already have a marine radio, but there is a lot of other things I'll now need. Gonna choose a fish finder with GPS and chart-plotter, few life preservers, flare gun and all the other things required by the Coast Guard. Have plenty of good boat rods that I bought couple of years ago with the anticipation of fishing out of my boat a lot sooner than it actually happened.

I was considering the Lowrance or Hummingbird sonar side scan models. Does anyone have any opinion of the Humminbird 798ci Si Combo Nvb Gpsmap Fishfinder - 407450-1v ?

Jumping from one "d%$#@" problem to the next! I swear this restoration is fighting me "every" single inch of the way. This newest problem, at first, doesn't seem sooooo big until you get into it. The darn oil filter won't come off!!!! It's frozen in place. I had to remove the port riser and exhaust hose just to get at it. Once down there you can't get any leverage. I've already bent one filter wrench's handle. I bought a strap wrench and it won't get between the block and filter. Bought a differant style 1/2" drive strap wrench and it failed. And lastly cursed it tell my tongue went raw. Anyone have any idea's, short of pulling the engine? Please no suggesting that I pound a large screwdriver thru it and turn it! Once off there is definitly an oil filter adapter being installed.

LX Kid,

My filter is mounted to a bracket with about 2? of hose. If yours is the same way can you loosen up the two mounting screws, pull the filter and bracket to a place that can be accessed?

To answer your question from several days ago. No I don?t have a restoration thread as of yet. I hope to soon. I have an 1982 22? Boston Whaler Revenge with a frozen GM 350 I/O.

Best of luck, Don.

Hy Don! Sounds like you really have a nice boat. Boston Whalers are really solid boats. Sorry to hear about the engine though. You could probably pick up a good used engine for $1000 or less. My oil filter is not the "remote" located type. I just ordered a kit so that I can move the filter to another location for ease of changing the oil filter. ($65) Why not start your own restroration thread and show us some pictures? You will find a lot of help and suggestions from all the great members on the forum. Also fill out your profile so people will know where your located. Ron

Well this is day 3 of trying to get this oil filter off! Went thru four differant types of oil filter wrenches trying to get it off. Already ordered the oil filter relocation kit today.

Hey Ron..just pound a large screw.....forget that!

So, there is a filter wrench made by vice grips that I have used. Large circular vice grips that will lock in around the filter. Flooded everything down with kroil and used the wrench up high near the bracket and eventually got it to break loose.....

I went to NAPA Auto Parts and ordered this oil filter wrench and will be in tomorrow morning. I've got about $40 in useless oil filter wrenches so far!

"SUCCESS!" The above oil filter wrench, along with a block of wood and pry bar, was able to persuade it to break free. Now if my oil filter relocation kit would get here.

Ah you don't need no relocation kit. Just put a new filter in the stock location. And make sure you twist it on there REAL nice and tight. You don't want that thing rattlin' off! ;) :p

Ha Ha! Real funngy! I never, never, never, never, never, ever want to go thru that again. Three and a half days to get a "stupid" oil filter off! I was sooooo afraid Iwas going to have to pull the engine to remove it.

I'm now leaning towards getting the Lowrance HDS-7 fishfinder. Anyone have this model and have an opinion? Thanks, Ron
