Great you finally got her wet. Puts more spirit into the work ahead. Hope it all flows for you so she can be enjoyed in the water instead of the driveway.

Took one of the risers, port side, and I believe it has the wrong gasket on it. It's my understanding, that because I have fresh water cooling, the gasket should be a restricted flow rather than the free flow that you see in the picture. Can some verify this for me? The manifold exhaust/water hose, 3" in diameter, is also failing and probably collapsing inside causing flow problems.

How do I get this darn lock off the nut without a special key? Gotta do the gimbal bearings and u-joints!

Hey Rick. No trim tabs got up and planed up fast. When I do the gimbal bearings and u-joints how will I get the lock off one of the outdrive nuts? I didn't get a key to remove it.

Is this a good prop for general purpose fishing? (Ballistic 14-7/8" x 15)

Got to get a full load on board and see how close you can get to wot...if full load and you are pegging it, then need to step up a pitch. Every pitch gives about 200 rpm's up or down...

I would think that is a good starting point.

I am turning a 17" aluminum with a 350 Vortec..........I doubt you will be able to go up w/ a 305.............:)

What is yout WOT RPM's at what speed?

Speedo not workig yet and didn't pay attention to the RPM's at wot. Only took her out for about 20 min to see how it would do. Still got some bugs to work out. Think the vaccum line to the speedo may be cracked, dry rotted, etc. Been raining like crazy the last couple of days and can't work on it. Ordered restrictor gaskets for the riser from iBoats this morning.

Continued good luck to you Ron.........

Those WOT #'s are important to make sure you're not lugging the engine.

Keep us posted!!!

WORKING IN THE RAIN!!!! "Man oh man," all the things I found out about OSCO risers and where the water exits out. I didn't understand "before" that the water flows out a slot in the top of the outlet side of the riser and drops down into the 3" exhaust hose. I chipped and cleaned the blocked slots, on both risers, to where water once again flows. Also cleaned and chipped all the outlet holes in the exhaust manifold to were water flows. Installed two new hoses and installed correct riser gaskets for sea water cooling. (Meaning restriced flow gasket.) Gonna take her out for sea trial #2 in the morning.

Took her out this moring and she really ran great. About 32 mph @ 2200 rpm. Adjusted up the shift interupt switch, re-tightened all the hose clamps and just looked everything over. The temp stayed right on 150 degrees. Top tested speed was about 36-38 with light fuel load for just a few moments. Came back home and pulled the stern drive unit and will put new gimbal bearing in tomorrow. The u-joints feel good with no binding at all. I'm going to over-grease the joints and see if any moisture pushes out. Found a small rust-thru spot in the port side valve cover that will need to be brazed or replaced. I was surprized at how quiet the engine runs at planed out speeds. You can actually carry on a conversation without yelling. The drive shaft has a rusty patina to it "I believe" from when it sat in a back yard for about 10 years and fresh water ran into the drive shaft area and bellows. If it were sea water it would have been very rusted up and scaled. The bellows looks almost new.

The nut lock was really kind of a non-issue! It was real easy to remove the lock. Just took a center punch and tapped both sides to loosen and then tapped it counter clockwise and it easily unscrewed.

WELL, when your old, decrepid and have a tendency to lie, the facts can get distorted at times. LoL "That's my story and I'm sticking to it!" Next time out I'll recheck my facts and give an update. Funny how things can get distorted when your excited. Kinda like fish stories and the one that got away! Ha I only put 15 gallons in each tank.

"AND THE SAGA GOES ON AND ON AND ON!" The water passage in the gimbal housing was eroded away more than I thought. Once I started grinding the corrosion out it fell thru all the way. Only one thing to do was to get a 3/4" copper union, fill the water passage cavity with JB Weld Industrial, cut the copper union to a length of 1-1/4", shove it in the passage and let it cure. Installed new gimbal bearing, lubed it, new gaskets and put the outdrive back together. I'm going to take her out again for it's 3rd sea trial tomorrow.

THE HOLE IS AT THE SIX O'CLOCK POSITION IN THE PICTURE

Great imagination on that fix will be watching to see how that hold up. I do have to wonder about the different metals reaction with one another though.

Ok, it's confession time! "I paid a boat mechanic to come over and replace the gimbal bearing!" He's the one with the imagination and I'm the one with the camera and money. Learnig as much as I can from him. He said he's done the same procedure several times over the years and has not had any call backs.

Its great you shared his secret with us. I would have been cursing and pulling out the old wallet looking for parts. Different metals react strange and the knowledge that this is ok is a gold mine. Hope you next test rocks. Thanks again
