Vrooom, Vrooom!!! WoW!!! Great Progress. Everytime I see your Son and you I get a bit envious. Father/Son Projects have a special place in my heart. Can't wait to see your glassin skills on the Stringers and Bulkheads.

LOL! I put my steering wheel on temporarily yesterday and of course the motor boat sound was made at least once ! Just tell your son come on it's just like warming up the t-bone nothing un-cool about that ! could even use the mouthpiece and get the pitch just right!

Fantastic Progress CW and Son! Looking closer to a splash every step...Great work!

I can't wait to just sit in mine and make the motor noises...:)

BTW, I liked the color combo on the boat with the cap on...the white, green and brown...I have actually been contemplating using a variation of those three colors on my tub...

Thanks Wood, Yeah, it has been pretty cool working with him on this. If all goes well this week we'll be up to our elbows in glassin by the weekend!

Thanks Gus! You're gonna be there sooner than you think. I just have the advantage of my cap being on pulleys right above the hull. Woody's got me so scared the cap won't fit that I had to try it before the structure was permament. :D

Not it makes sense from a framing standpoint on a interior change to have it back on for a day or two.

That color's not staying what is brown will become green at some future date when the bottom of the boat is closer to done.

Don't mean to "Skeer Ya" but... seen a lot of guys here on the forum cutting their decks and re-strapping their boats to pull em in to get it to fit, soooo..... I try to be a bit over cautious now with everyone to help ensure success!!!:D

No Mike, I'm glad you're lookin out for us. I would have never even thought twice about it had you not hammered that home so many times to us newbs. And again, when it's so easy to access why not be sure? I read some of those re-strapping and deck cutting horror stories and I sure don't want to end up like that.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Ok, a little progress this week in anticipation of the weekend coming up.

I have created a cross member to be installed under the floor to mount a pedestal seat to. I trimmed it down to stop at the center stringer so the floor will be able to follow the bow I created.

I put the old metal bench seat base back in just to get an idea about seat height. Of course I sat an made the obligatory motor boat noises, lol. Jr is still not sure about that, lol

and tonight I routered down the edges of all the stringers and cross bracing to prep them for a resin soak and a layer of csm prior to install.

Now on to the question of the day. Livewell placement. I have a ton of room up front and considered a 3.5' x 16 x 18 deep live well with a segmented off bait well up there. But, in all my research on livewells, it seams a rear livewell is more preferred. I did some measuring of the gas tank and space available behind the bench seat and I can just squeez a 3' x 16 x 18 deep (top to bottom) livewell in. The only problem will be having to cut th existing back deck in the cap and I will be unable to have my seat backs go very high so that I can access the livewell easily. The crappy black lines show where the cut out would be.

I would still put a bait well up front. I would also have to figure out how to mount the back pedestal seat with the livewell there.

Anyone have any thoughts on pro's and con's between putting it front or back? I can't decide if weight distribution would be better with it front or back. (I figure given it's size and likely water levels we're talking about 260lbs) If we go for the back location I'd dado the center stringer to allow the livewell to sit about an inch lower.

Looks like you would have to slide the seatmount back but that would be tuff with the splash right there. Maybe shortin up the splash area for more deck room. Does that hatch stay water tight down in the splashwell?

I don't know about that hatch but one idea I had was to cut the doors for the livewell around the seat mount. I may be crazy these days but the cutting and glassin aspect is the least daunting part of the question. I guess I'm more concerned with the weight distribution and ease of access than anything else.

I don't have a pix, but don't a lot of boats have live wells basically right at your feet when you are sitting on a pedestal? If I'm not mistaken, some ski poles also use a similar post mount as a seat pedestal. So 1 mount, double duty:

The red lines are double 3/4" ply either space on each side of the base or laminated together and tabbed to the gunwales at the end, the bottom of the splashwell, and the side of the livewell...

The green is the base/mount

Yup, we're on the same page there JBC, I'm thinking we could also run a support fore and aft and use it as the rest between the lids on the livewell.

Hiya Craig...

Awesome looking progress...

I am trying to catch up but you keep pullin ahead...;)

I like where you are headed with the livewell...The bassassin has two, one fore and one aft, by the time I am done, it may end up with three, two live wells and a separate bait well...

I played around with your rendition, and came up with this...

It affords you to have a huge well, but with smaller, easier to open hatches from the sitting position...and let's you keep the seat post in an optimal position...

Have a great weekend!

I kinda like GT's drawing just be sure the seat is high enough where the lids don't hit Prolly plenty high..

1++ for GT1 drawing. A little more work but alot more ways to use the space.

Gus, I think you found a way to make it all work! I like it with a couple of small mods that you'll have to wait to see, lol

I'm still putting a bait well in the front but now I'll have a ton of storage space...

Nice & probably inexpensive portable live or bait well. W/out the insulation & etc of being installed into the deck, I might paint the lid white. I'm not a fan of poached fish:eek:

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Nice guys, I couldn't get that link to work all weekend from my iPad, so I'll just have to use my imagination, lol

It's been a pretty productive weekend. Saturday I managed to get all the rest of the electrical and a bunch of other odds and ends off the cap. Then I layed out the stringers and cross members and cut the CSM in prep.

and put the first side of CSM on,

Today I spent the day doing some honey do yard work for Mom's day. Gotta keep the admiral happy, lol I did get some time after dinner tonight to spend some time on the boat.

I cleaned up the bubbles and extra csm from yesterday and prepped them for the second coat. My son got home at just in time to come out and help me put the second side of CSM on.

I have my PL and 1/4 in dowel for the install all ready to go. The weather is looking pretty good for the week so let's hope we can get them installed. I already have some other cross braces and bulkheads ready for glass so we could even double dip as we install the stringers. Almost through the first 5 gal pail of resin now.

Hope everyone had a good weekend!
