This is really cool, I have a 1982 aluminum hull and was looking for info completely unrelated to this, but got instantly sucked in and have now completed reading the entire thread to date. AMAZING workmanship, tip of the hat to both you and your son. I'm 28 and hope that if I have a son someday we'll be able to do something similar to this!

thanks Gus, we're just trying to keep pace with you :) Hopefully the rain is holding off this week for ya.

Thanks Troop, Hoping for Thursday or Friday at this point. To many kids sports, garden planting and evening obligations this week through Wednesday.

Welcome aboard strokendiesel! Thanks for the complement, we have learned as we went along. With an attitude like that at 28 I have no doubt you'll pass on your hobbies and skills to your children someday. Feel free to offer any suggestions you have as we go. Just stay away form that GT1M dude, he's nothing but trouble, lol

What's the configuration of your tinny? Is it a similar setup to what mine was?

My Brother Craig,
If I can't take a little good natured ribbing from my Iboats gang...I should pack up my glassin supplies and find something else to do...

It is the awesome camaraderie that I feel when I'm here, that makes this place so special...whether it is for some harrassing, heckling, or just plain funnin...

Have a great 'humpday'...

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

haha, I know ya were, it looked like you guys had a great time together!

It was kind of similar... Open bow but wrap around seating and then back-to-backs port and starboard. As of now, this is the best pic I could find, but I'm hopefully putting a replacement electric choke solonoid in her tonight (please USPS, don't let me down) for a weekend fishing/ bachelor party that I'm leaving for tomorrow right after work- so I'll try and take a few better pics. Almost identical color scheme!

Sylvan seemed to have a very common color scheme and look during that period from what I've found. I just can't find any other fiberglass ones like mine.

Have fun at the bachelor party and I'll look forward to more photos.

Hey brutha Bear! Thanks for checking in. Hope all is well with you and yours these days.

Everyone else, Sorry for the LONG lack of posting. Between the holiday weekend and dealing with some health issues (nothing new, it just seems to flare up at the worst times, lol) We've made very little progress in the past couple of weeks. We did get to go camping for the holiday weekend and had a blast. Today I went back to my old man doc and got my meds adjusted and we're hopefull things will smooth out better again soon. Ok, enough of the whiney crap. Tonight I got back to the boat. I managed to get the last layer of 1708 cut and prepped for install on the transom. I also got one last layer cut for the bilge area. I scuffed up the transom and hull in prepperation of installation then cleaned and prepped the hull. Tomorrow, assumming I feel ok still I'll be trying to get it all resined in and the stringers pl'd in.

I hope all are ready for a productive weekend and I promise I'll catch up with all of your projects over the next few days.

Hey guys!

Just checking in- Craig, I hope all is well!
Thanks Stroken things are very well right now.

Hey all, we made some major progress over the past weekend.

We started by cutting and fitting the last layer of 1708 for the transom and bilge area. This thing should be bullet proof now.

Then we resined it all up. We also took the opportunity to do a wet on wet layup on the top of the transom where we had to trim it down a bit after install.

Next we bedded the stringers; and used whatever we could find (yes, 5 gal buckets of resin work well :) )

then we PB'd them all in nice and cozy. It's starting to come back together....

note - we only glued & pb'd the stern half of the port and keel stringers. the bow has a little sag that we are going to get out by moving the boat back on the cradle before we finish bedding and pb fileting them in.

Next I started laying a layer of CSM on the remaining bulkhead and cross bracing pieces.

and my son took over the demolition and grinding tasks on the trailer.

Here's one last look at the finished transom with stringers and the first three cross braces just dry fit.

Work has been halted a bit since Sunday evening when the grinder went up in smoke. I'll swing by and pick up a new one at HF tomorrow.

I hope all are having a great week!

Thanks SP, I'm glad I took the advice on here early on and got a cheap one to begin with. I did see you toasted yours as well. It must be the season, lol

Hmmm, I would have liked it a little better if the bottom piece would have been tabbed into the transom too. Just curious as to why it wasn't??? Other than that, looks like some text book glass work.

There was already 2 layers tabbed in on all three sides. The bottom layer was more to clean up the bilge area than anything.

Thanks Wood

Oh, I see, Professor Wood is just testing the pupil, lol That's ok, I like that you questioned it. If I can't prove that I've done it right I need to fix it. I actually went overboard on the port and starboard tabbing with that last layer on the transom but I just wanted to make it bullet proof.

Well, with drilling the holes to get the "Mechanical" bond, the Overkill on the tabbing and the Excellent "No Bubble" glass work, I'd say the transom is...
