Wow, Great job CW. I was just re-reading the entire thread. Felt like you guys are all out in the garage together again. Is there a benefit in having such a large bilge area? My box was pretty large too, and I was wondering if the size really mattered? Good luck and good to see you back.

BTW, I really like your pink Morse. Real men are not afraid to wear pink! Not that I want you to wear the machine, but I bet you look good next to it.;)

Craig,

I have a question about your process. When you tabbed in the transom, did you wet the area first with resin, then add fillets, wait for a bit for it to start hardening and then lay the cloth? I tried tabbing tonight and I started with the PB then applied resin around it and then laid the cloth. The PB started hardening in some areas before I was ready and it got out of hand so I just pulled the cloth, cleaned up for the night and will try again tomorrow. Just curious what steps you took. Thanks, AJ

Whew, there for a minute, I expected a Bear-esque bailing on it post when you said to sit down. Whew, that was a close one.

If you're only going to do 1 board, do it well. So ya done good!;)

Yeah, I kinda thought that'd get your attention... thanks JBC!

WooooHoooo! He's Back! and producing...stoked to see you getting it on again...now I have some real competition...;)

I'm not sure about the competition part but hey, I haven't given up yet and I'm startin to get it rollin again. Thanks Gus for stickin by us.

Well...I see you haven't forgotten how to do quality glass work. NICE!!!!!:D

Awwww, :blushing: thanks Woodsy.

Thanks AJJMH, welcome back aboard! I'm not sure on the bilge box question as I am just rebuilding back to the factory size on that. Maybe some of the other much more knowledgable iboaters will help us out on that question. Yeah, that Morse really has grown on me. can't wait to give it a workout this winter.

I bet it feels good to get back at it. Nice work.

Yup sure does. Thanks Decker!

AJJHM, We did this in a multistep process. The first day we pb'd in the transom. Once that cured we filleted edges around it. Once that cured we did a wet on wet layup of 1 layer of CSM followed by 2 layers of 1708 biaxial cloth. Once that cured we did 2 layers of 1708 covering the entire transom.

Nice work CW ! Glad to see ya back at it !

Thanks SP, glad to be back at it.

Thanks sevanseriesta, we're slowly getting back into it again and starting to pick up steam again. No stealing necessary, if you find something you like here great! just be prepared when we learn from you. Welcome aboard!

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Ok my iboats brethren. I trust you all had a productive weekend. We were busy but we did manage to get a few hours in on Saturday.

I finally had some time to clean out the hull from all our laziness this summer. I scrubbed down all the stringers we had bedded and pb'd in, vacuumed out the dirt and grime in between and wiped it all down with acetone. Finally, ready to move back forward again!

I managed to spend enough time to lay 1 layer of CSM and 2 layers of 1708 wet on wet to tab in both sides of the port side stringer and the port side of the center stringer.

by the time I was done my back was killing me  I had forgotten how uncomfortable this could get, lol

Here's Saturdays results.

Tonight I was able to get back at it again. Not much time but made enough time to do a wet on wet layup of the starboard side of the center stringer.

We're almost out of 1708 so I'll put in an order tomorrow and we'll have to wait for it to arrive to finish the starboard stringer. Not to worry though. We have enough scraps to take care of the bilge area and we have a few other pieces to bed in as well, not to mention getting back onto the trailer. Look for our next progress on Thursday.

Thanks Troop, I was getting jealous of your progress. I got a line on a local supplier for fiberglass materials. I'm hoping to catch up with them tomorrow before I try another supplier out of Wisconsin. I love US Composites but the shipping times kill me, lol

Thanks Gatorfan! We are getting re-motivated. Big projects like this need some breaks here and there I think.

Thanks Decker! These projects seem to always be finding new and improved ways of contorting our bodies, haha...

Thanks much brutha Bear! I have a feeling we're just hitting the tip of the iceberg for glassin practice.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Ok, tonight we decided to get a bit of a start on the weekend. So we bedded another bulkhead board and pb'd it in. We didn't have much time but in the spirit of my boat brother Trooper, somethings better than nothing. Here's hoping everyone has a productive weekend ahead.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Updates coming soon... It's been pretty busy but I have been getting quite a lot done on the boat. I've had to cut out my iboats time to fit it all in but I think you'll all find it worth it shortly. It even includes a JASesque battery debate on front fishing deck hatches and locations, lol... I'll be uploading pics today and hope to start catching up the thread after that.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

ok, here is the first catch up post.

the majority of the main deck area stringers are tabbed in and just waiting for me to cap them. I have laid out the support cross braces and as planned there is about a 3/4 inch bow to the middle of the deck to facilitate drainage. I feel I should kerf the cross braces so they don't have a constant pressure on the screws holding them in place. So my question is. Should I kerf the top or the bottom of the braces at the center stringer? I feel like if I kerf the bottom then I can fill the expanded cuts with PB and make a more solid connection at the stringer. If I kerf the top then I feel like I wouldn't get as much resin/pb into the cuts when they are squeezed together.

Thoughts? suggestions?

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

In the interest of keeping my forward momentum, I decided to continue on down the remainder of the stringers path.

The first thing I did was to create a template of the hull for both the center (keel) stringer and the 2 outer stingers.

I did this by stapling a large piece of cardboard to a piece of scrap wood so I could hang it just to the side of the stringer location.

Then I created a redneck scribing device to transfer the curve of the hull to my cardboard. (much like I've seen else where on this forum from the pro's but maybe they were a bit more pofessional about it)

Then I just ran the bottom of redneck scribing thingamajig along the hull where the stringer should go while the sharpie end put a line on the side of the cardboard. This process gave me a pretty good line to follow for cutting out both of my templates. (yes, the starboard and port stringers have the same bottom curve to them)

and here is the results

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Have you already got a layer of csm on the braces ? If it,s just 3/4 " in a span of say what 4 ft I would think it would bend ok without kerfing. The weight of the deck I think would hold it down . Are the deck boards running parallel to the stringers or perpendicular.? Plywood does not bend well against the grain ..Hopefully someone that knows what there doing will chime in. Sometimes my elevator gets stuck between floors ya know..

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

yup, already have a layer on them. I can stand on them and they bow down nicely, I'm just concerned about long term constant strain pulling at the screws. If everyone agrees they're alright then I'll just leave em alone.

The deck will be put in in two pieces. It's 5ish ft wide so I planned on two 2.5ftish pieces running fore to aft meeting on the center stringer. I'm planning on 1/2" for the deck.
