Re: 1984 Chris Craft Scorpion 186 Restoration

My Sea Ray stepped the stringers as it went up the boat, so it provided a good place to make joints.

That is a cool boat!

Google:

Scarf joint

It can be used to make longer then 8ft stringers

If your stringers are 3/4" wide, you can stagger the seams & glue up 2 layers of 3/8" ply and make any length stringer you need.

Make sure to use exterior rated, waterproof glue laminated plywood and a waterproof glue....

Nice boat, Norcal....I almost bought one of those CC Scorpion bow riders last season...same color combo, in fact! It had totally been redone (new transom, stringers and deck) by reputable marina. I have pics if you'd like to see them.

Now, get to work! Boating season is fast approaching!

Thanks for the replies.

I understand the concept of how to splice them, just looking at the way they are laid out got me thinking about if it would make a difference in strength. I was thinking of doing the bulkheads first since they run the width of the hull, the stringers in between which would be 3 pieces 4 across and I plan on re poring foam for strength/sound dampening. Deck will be screwed down keeping everything solid. Still not sure though.

That would be cool, feel free to post them here. I try to find as many as I can for inspiration. I want to keep the classic look when I convert to a sun pad/bench seat and since that was a factory option it would be cool to get an idea how how they originally did it.

Opinions on doubling up the 3x4" if I do 1 piece stringers? Would that add to much unneeded weight?

I'm not sure that this:

Is the same question as this:

I may be missing something, it's been a very very long 7 days, but I don't understand the new question. The 1st qoute above is the only 3X4 reference I noticed..

Doubling the 3 stringers to 4" wide?

Doubling up if I do a 1 piece stringer. Since I would need to do a joint, I would do the offset joints for strength so I would end up with 1.5" wide stringers with side by side 3/4" plywood.

If you're concerned about weight use 2 pcs of 1/2" or 3/8" ply.......

But what does a whole sheet of 3/4" ply weigh? Instead of half a whole sheet doing single 3/4" stringers, you'd use a whole sheet +/-.....

So ...... What ever happened here ? Did it get finished ? Verdict on stringers and bulkheads. Did you consider sea cast for any of these items it is supposed to "cure" the rot problem and can be used for (quoted from sea cast site) Never do another transom, stringer or motor mount replacement due to rot.

The main reason i am asking is i have a 187 limited that I am going to do a full resto on transom, floor, stringers, bulkheads, BUT .. I am going to fix the whole water sitting issue between the ski locker and the drain plug. I saw a trick of glassing a pipe from the ski locker under the gas tank to the engine valley, they also cut out the raised plate the bilge was on and made it shorter instead of an 1&1/2 inches i think it was cut to 1/4 inch.

One more question, Can anybody explain to me why when they installed the plug from the factory it is an inch or so higher than the bottom of the hull?
