Re: 1984 Silverton 34C Remodel/Update/Upgrade PIC HEAVY

Thanks.

For exterior varnish it is all Epifanes Woodfinish Gloss. Expensive stuff but I like the look of it.

After a few build coats I begin to sand with 220 grit. Knock it back down flat. Then coat it, then sand, then coat... In the end I believe I got around 8-9 coats on. Sanding removes some build up, but creates a flat surface. Some trucks I've learned. Use a good quality brush. I've done it with foam but find the brush works better. Strain the varnish into another container. Brush in one direction (back into where you just varnished) with as few strokes as possible. One quick tip off after the piece is coated and before it begins to set should give a nice flat finish.

The best secret I've found, lower your expectations! If you fight to get every bubble or piece of debris out, you will go crazy. Decide what your happy with and remember only you will see the negative in the finish, everyone else will think it looks perfect!

Hey man, you missed a bubble!! Lmao, Sry couldn't resist. Projects are looking great man. Re-engineering layouts and where things fit goes a long way on any boat. Great job.

Thanks.

I actually tried some of the spray varnish like what you used on your wood work. Haven't got it down yet, but I'm always up for trying something new out.

Nice lines on that boat, the 80's to early 90's silvertons were always a fav of mine. Then came the bleach bottle hulls... and the sticker prices...

I have always been a fan of the older ones as well. I tend to always lean toward older boxier style boats. I also like the dark green hull color that only came in 1984.

Then put down a thin coat of body filler.

Only able to attack the top half, due to an issue with the body filler not curing right. I will see what I can do tomorrow with it.

In primer:

Then prepped, filled some holes and put one coat of Hatteras off white on the starboard aft bulkhead.

Hard to see in the pictures but the off white is very close to the gelcoat color in the cabin.

I took the valances that run along the top edge of the side windows home. I will get my fabric and recover them soon.

Well, the wood always looks great, but the new valance material is really setting that area off.

It can't be said enough - great work.

Thanks, need to refind my sewing skills. Got it all set up and attempted some test pieces with no luck. Will hopefully tackle the rest of the valances in the next day or so.

Got the second of three valances done and put in.

Mocked up the chairs! Pillows are a real close color match, although in this photo they look quite a bit different.

Then got some teak cut down to trim out the aft bulkhead. They will get stain and varnish before going in for good.

Really looking sharp buddy. I like the valances and that paint was a great match. How about covering those pillows with the same fabric you did your valances in? ;)

Re: 1984 Silverton 34C Remodel/Update/Upgrade PIC HEAVY

I have 6 more yards of fabric I bought. I will do the slider curtain, and most likely wrap the triangles in this material. I thought about pillows as well and may still do that!
