Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

I just nearly soiled myself....

the price of the ez dri foam is WAYYYYYYYYYYYY more than I was prepared for, the regular upholstery foam is like 1/3 the price. I really don't want to spend $300+ on foam for this thing! I saved some of the foam from the original seating but nowhere near enough to do this right.

Crap.......

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

that sir looks sweet, i really like how that looks, and you seem to be coming along nicely.
as far as the little space between the seat and the gunwhale goes, use your scrap wood to make a filler piece,, just make sure you brace it well(like you did with the corners on the new box)

do you plan on storage in there? if so i suggest the accsess to be the side of the L by the walkway,,, if you havent decided yet.
i think it was woodonglass and the flamingo project,,, not sure,,, that used couch cusions wrapped in plastic as the foam,, ( i looked but couldn't find it) sorry.

i am not sure what everyone else thinks but i am all for the top and outside pieces to be glasses over. to seal out the wet so to speak.
i think i would cover it anyway with vinyl, so color matching doesn't really matter much,,, just my thoughts anyway

Thanks mark for the reply....
I had planned on making the door to the storage facing toward the stern....but now ya got me thinking about that. I haven't cut the hole or the cupholder holes yet until i'm sure where I want everything.
After considering things, I am going to cover the entire thing in a layer of glass. 1.5oz CSM i think. I was hoping some of the "glass guys" would chime in about what is the best option for this. I may start a new thread for it as your the only one that reads this...lol Thank you sir!
I like keeping track of my work and bouncing ideas off of others. Thats what these forums are for.
I haven't done anywork today. I might head out there shortly and make those "shim" pieces for that tiny gap.. Its less than 1/4" at its widest. Dunno where I went off on my measurements but must have somewhere. There was a TON of tricky angles to be cut. Especially where the two backrest portions meet up. They are both angled back and the angle between them had me confused how to cut the piece at first.. but i figured it out.

Before I do anything...I want to make sure the bondo glass short strand filler is suitable to form fillets??? AND, will the csm and poly resin stick to it? The bondo glass is made of poly so I would think it'd be ok...just wanna be sure. It would be a real pita to sand/grind it all off if it didn't work. I've been doing good on this thing so far and don't wanna screw it up!!! lol

Lol, well I didn't wait for a response and just went for it. The bondo glass seemed to work ok (ish) for the fillets. Making peanut butter would have been better cause it spreads out easier and smoother. The bondo glass had longer glass strands in it than what i expected. The fillets came out good and a bit more sanding and it'll be ready for glass. The fillets give a nice rounded curve to the creases. I'm happy with it. :)
I used this stuff and cut off the rounded corner of a bondo spreader thingy to create the curve,
bondoglass.jpg

I got scared at first cause I made a huge mess (or what appeared to be) It didn't come out bad after a bit of sanding. Anyone that uses this stuff, remember that it sets in 5 minutes. YES 5!
seating-fillet3.jpg

I shot a close up of the stuff to show the curve it gives. I think it will end up quite nice with a layer of glass and vinyl over it. I will probably use a very thin foam to give the vinly some "cushion". I"m thinking the backrest and seat cushion will be seperate pieces and snap in place.....So many decisions...lol

I"m still wondering if the 1.5oz csm is ok to wrap this whole thing with?????

yep 5 min. lol. although not really experienced with glass i did a keel on a row boat with it and from my memory,,,,,,, 5 min to harden,,, and 5 hours to sand it smooth,,,with my caveman tacticks at the time,( i put on extra, i can always sand back in shape,,lol),, i was thinken,,bahahaha.
it looks like you don't have the overkill i had! i am all for protectin the wood on the seatbase with the longest lasting option, but i do agree with you starting a thread to perk up the ears of the pro's.

(my cheap self) again is thinken of the thicker donor cushions wrapped in some sort of plastic. i would go 2" (compressed to 1")for the body of the backrest and 5 or 6"( compressed to 3 or 4") for the upper edge and the bottom seat cushion. you have allready proven that the vinyl is in the bag( so to speak) great work on the previous cushion! i am sure you'll be fine.

hope it helps

Thanks mark! I really appreciate your advice..I"m gonna keep my eye out for a junk couch to steal some foam. I"m also thinking that I can just buy regular upholstery foam for it too. Its waaaaayyyy cheaper and I can cover in plastic like WOG did in his thread.
Thanks again sir
gonna start a new thread to get some tips on the glassin'

I put 1 layer of csm around the top edges and seams, I will flip it over tomorrow and do the bottom edges about 6" up. I have some two part epoxy paint I'm going to slather over it once the glassin' is finished. I don't think this thing will rot away anytime soon. :)

Not a good pic but its what I got....

Woodonglass suggested tearing the glass instead of cutting and that really worked well!!! I tore strips the length and width needed and applied a lyer of resin to the wood and then layed the glass in place and dabbed resin until saturated.

BTW, it was weird coming home after work and not seeing my two boats. :(

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

You jinxed me mark! lol

Headed home tonight due to rain coming in. The radar was looking kinda funky and I didn't want to worry while anchored for the night. I woke up last night about 3am and the wind picked up to about 15mph and we had drifted to within 50ft of shore!! I moved us to a protected cove and set the anchor as best I could. We were good for the night and next morning. Thankfully!

I'm using a 15lb "fluke" anchor with the slip ring deal. I don't like it because if the wind shifts, it basically dislodges the anchor. I'm anchor shopping now......
Thinking more like 20-25lbs and NOT a slip ring.
Any suggestions from anyone? I'd like to be able to sleep comforably and not worry about moving regardless of condition changes.

sorry, didn't mean to jinx you:(

as far as the anchor goes,,, do you have chain on it? if not add like 10 ft and it'll do wonders, imho.

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

Yes sir, I have 10ft of chain. It normally holds ok, but if the wind shifts direction that slip ring anchor dislodges and I go drifting.

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

Ciera,
gotcha, i dont get that much down here with the current holding us gainst the anchor, however when the wind blows harder upriver it will swing me around (the anchor as pivot) and get me closer to shore:eek:
when this happends and i am staying at a particular spot we go to the second smaller stern anchor option. that should keep you firmly seated as well.
its kinda an art to get both anchors seated,,,,, or a pita however you look at it , lol
hope it helps

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

Thanks Mark I appreciate the advice! I think i'm going to get a new anchor anyways for peace of mind and use this 15lb for a stern anchor. I currently have just a tiny lil anchor for the stern and rarely use it because it doesn't do much if the wind is blowing. I've got my supplies ordered for finish up the seating! I'm getting anxious to get this done and a bit nervous about the sewing/upholstery work. Marine vinyl isn't cheap and I wanna do it right the first time!
I've ordered all new foam for the seat cushion and backrest, 1/4" foam to wrap the entire thing with to give the vinyl some "cushion" against the bare wood parts. Also ordered a box of SS staples for the air stapler. I also picked up 2mil plastic sheeting to cover all of the foam after its glued down and a couple cans of 3m super77 adhesive spray.
Waiting for the foam to get here to get started!!!
Thanks for the help sir,
Jimmy

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

I ended up wrapping all the seams and edges with CSM and then painting the whole thing with two part epoxy paint. I still have to cut the hole for the storage area under the "box", but the cupholders and water inlet hole are cutout.

I have all this in my seat thread, but wanted to post it here as well. I'm pretty happy with how this has turned out so far and this is all the stuff you will never see!!!! lmao
The upholstery work is going to be key in making this look decent. I'm going with the dark blue and gray like the stern seat I made.
Mostly blue with some gray stripes, was gonna try to make curved stripes but thats just more headache...:D

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

this is a real crappy MS paint sketch of the vinyl layout I have in my head. The gray stripe will be centered on the seating 'box" and also the angled backrest part. The colors aren't exactly right and the sketch is super crappy but kind of an idea of what i'm thinking....

too stripey? I was thinking maybe to much stripe "ness" lol
I'm trying to plan this out in my head....

Jimmy,
great progress,,, i have been silently following the seat thread,,lol.
you are doing a great job with it. i agree it is a little too stripey but not sure,,,, how about one large grey stripe on the side and another on the back L part,,,. or even better longwise stripes top of seat grey to about 6 in down with 8 in blue bottom piece on the seatback, and on the seat,,, part blue towards the inside with about the last 6 in in grey,,,, just thinkin out loud,,,,it's your boat
and by the way once done you gotta make me one:D,,lol,,, i'll put some of those rgb's on your rig as trade,,lol.

again great work

WOW, Great job on the boats. I read all the pages and got some great Ideas. I have a small Bayliner Capri 1600 BR and I love it. Got it from a friend that bought it back in 1996 from an older couple and put it in the water 4 times. It's in great shape. Going to start my compounding tonight. Thanks for all your hard work.
