Mark...do you by chance have a pic of your stern seat backrest? I'm going to make one for my boat and looking for a pic of the construction. I was thinking a 1/2" plywood board covered in foam and vinyl. Does yours have a "backer board"? or is it just cushion? How does it attach to the rails?

thanks man! I"m waiting on my foam (should be this week) and have some scraps and vinyl I can make this stern backrest with while I wait.
Hope your all having a great weekend!

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

here is a not so good pic of the backrest.
siderail.jpg

and one from the stern
sternrail3.jpg

one of the differences i see between yours and mine is your seat bottom is even with the stern height,,,, mine is about 4in below,,,but not nearly as deep as yours
as far as the back goes,,,, just ply with foam wrapped in vinyl. i guess the vinyl was showing signs of fatigue so the po wrapped it in new vinyl like a xmas present,,, lol. ,,,,,, its on the todo list for this fall.
anyway it attatches to the ss rails with 2 screws on each upright. mine are actually countersunk by a dent to keep it flush.
hope it helps,,,

gotta say we had a rafting weekend the last few days, besides having a blast, it solidified the rail height,,,, i love them that high. served as a bar when standing on the platform,,,and the side rails make a nice armrest when people sit on the gunwhale,,,
also on another note the lil (walleyworld) remote controll boat made its maden voyage yesterday, it carried or dragged,,lol a few "soda pops" to the outside boats on our string:D,,,, succesfully after a few attemps,,,bahahaha,,, using a hair bungee as the tow rope lmao,,,,bahahaha,,,, hope ya had a great weekend

Can I ask the dimensions of the rear fold down seat? My 1989 2455 doesn't have that and it would sure be great for more seating :)

attached some pics will add more

Thanks

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

Thanks guys. I got the compound mentioned earlier in this thread and am doing it by hand and getting pretty good results. My question and there is some (not a lot) yellowing of the white gel coat. Can I do anything about that?
Thanks in advance.

THanks Laddy I got luck got it for $2000 with trailer :) last year spent most of summer chasing down faulty spark basically replaced everything electrical LOL ended up converting to Electronic Ignition. Had to replace Lower ( found good used one online for $300) so lucky again. Now on to redoing the upholestry :)

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

daddybx, I didn't get a chance to get into the boat and measure the stern seat for you. I'll get it tomorrow, I copied the original.

lilbuggy, thank you sir for the pics!!!! I've got the plywood cut and a coat of epoxy paint on one side. I'm still waiting for my new foam to arrive!!! Grrr..... The scrap piece i have isn't quite long enough for the backrest.

I yanked off the starboard cockpit trip piece the other day and decided to recover it to match all the new upholstery. I'm reusing the old foam it had and used the old vinyl as a basic template for the new vinyl.
Here is the original trim piece, the vinyl is in kinda crappy shape and didn't match the new stuff.
starboardcockpittrim3.jpg

I pulled out each staple individually and got the vinyl and foam off the backer board in one piece...the backer board is checked like crazy. Its only 30 years old!
starboardcockpittrim4.jpg

What are these things called?
starboardcockpittrim2.jpg

broke two of them ripping out the piece.

I had left over wood, so I decided to cut a new backer board to replace the old one....
Hard to see in the pic against the plywood but I traced the old one and cut out the new piece. One side has a coat of epoxy paint on it and will flip over in the morning to paint the other side.
starboardcockpittrim5.jpg

While I was on a roll, I went ahead and cut some scrap vinyl I had laying around and stitched up the new cover for the trim. I changed the pattern of the stripes vs. the original but this design will match my new upholstery design...:)
starboardcockpittrim6.jpg

(the vinyl is wrinkled because it was scrap and balled up in a bag, I assure you the seams are straight lines! lol, and double stitched..

Thanks Ciera no rush :)
Can anyone tell me best wood to redo the topside bench seat with? Can I use plain old Plywood? Or should I get pressure treated? If any what should i coat the wood in before re-installing

Thanks all

exterior grade plywood will work fine. No need for PT wood. The treated stuff is soaking wet when purchased and would take months to dry out. I used a two part epoxy paint to seal the wood. I also fiberglassed all the seams and edges which probably wasn't needed but I like overkill! :)

Thanks wood! Do you know the name of those plastic body clip dealy bops in the pic above? I gotta replace them on the new trim piece, and thinking of using them to attach the backrest of the new L seat. They almost look like the things that hold on door panels in a car....

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

nice lookin boat there Daddy,

jimmy you are right, thos thingamabob (trim fasteners) are the very same kind that auto makers use,,,, there has to be a gazillion different styles,,, i found napa had the best assortment of them.
my side pieces are attatched using a long bolt( somehow attatched to behind the vinyl and thru the wood) anyway you just match the long bolts to the holes and reach up in the cubby hole(glove box/ whatever thats called)with a lil nut and hand tighten. those plastic thingys(trim fasteners) should do well but dont like being off and on.
you are makin great headway, great job

Re: 1985 Bayliner 2450 Ciera Sunbridge Restoration underway!

sorry just thought of it,,,
my back piece is attatched with a 2 big dog velcro strips, 2+ in x the whole length; note mine the back and top is all one piece that is stapled to the middle of the frontside backrest and wrapping around the top and then the back and stapled underneath(creating a kind of top rail of puffiness) than there is an insert for the middle of the back( kinda like your side panel that just "big boy" velcros to fill the gap between the seat cushion and seatback. which in turn makes my stripes on the seat horizonal. i know your plan is verticle but i thought that describing( as best as i can) may be able to help ya figure out the best way for your application.

Thanks for the pics mark! I found the body clips at o'reilly autoparts. I got the trim piece finished up, just have to reinstall in the boat.

I'm happy with it! It came out nice, now if only the seating will be as easy...lol

Here is a shot of the backside and the new xmas tree body clips
