Mounted the seats in the boat this afternoon. They look OK. I guess I didn't really think much about the color before I bought the material because it kind of looks weird in the boat.

Oh well, at least they look better than they did before for about $50 total for material and staples. Hopefully they will last a season till I can afford new seats.

Could have chosen a better color...oh well, they are only temporary.

...looking at the pictures, I guess I could have put more thought and time into the corner folds -- some are too obvious and some don't match the section next to them. The seats were in 8 individual pieces when I covered them and I didn't think about how they would go together in the end.

I think they look great. I really like the palm branch, sunshine effect you used in the first photo. That white flower worked as well. Considering a tight budget and being ready to splash when the time comes just keep at it it's lookin great

Thanks LR. Yeah, the palm trees and sunshine have been great around here lately. It has been sunny and in the upper 70s to low 80s every day lately. That is what is motivating me to get this thing on the water ASAP.

I am going to start recovering most of the upholstery in a few days -- probably everything except the side panels. Somehow, those are still in pretty good shape, except for where I spilled resin on them. I went shopping for vinyl yesterday and there sure is a lot to choose from. What are you going with on your upholstery, besides the new lounge seats? Are you still thinking of using the outdoor furniture fabric? Please post some pictures?

I plan on replacing the side panels similar to original covered in vinyl. Maybe a panel of Fabric just to tie in the bow work to the back we will see. Not back to work yet due to health and day job. but warm air is coming. It's actually been colder than I remember or I got old. Could be both. As soon as I get back to work I will post a bunch of pics. I gotta get busy cause I think the fish are already stirring.

I stripped my engine cover/doghouse and my 2 rear seats and found someone to duplicate the covers with my material (marine vinyl from Joann's) for $100 labor. I will reinstall myself. Upholstery shops wanted $550 if I just brought them the entire seats and engine cover. I am saving $450 labor by stripping and reinstalling myself.

While I am waiting for my doghouse and seat covers to be redone, I am replacing the wood on the bottom of the rear seats, which was getting a little soft after 25 years. The original wood appears to have been PT plywood. There was absolutely no glass or resin.

I went to HD to by a sheet of PT ply and all they had was 3/4", way too thick. They sold me a sheet of regular 15/32 CDX and told me to apply a product called Copper Green Wood Preservative to it. They said it would make my CDX the same as PT ply. has anyone ever heard of this product? Will it work for this application?

SD, do you have any pics of your doghouse before it was sent to be redone? Mine is just covered in red carpet and I'd be interested to see what it is suposed to look like inside/outside.

AMD, here are the before photos. I just got the new cover back and should be installing it today or tomorrow. I will post the new pics when I am done.



The bare wood parts were covered with red carpet. The wood is dark, but it is dry and pretty solid. I will be sanding, glassing the corners, and painting with Rustoleum prior to installing the new carpet.

The inside is just bare wood right now. I will be adding some angle braces and glassing the seams. I removed the decaying foam and will likely be replacing it with firewall stuff from an auto parts store.

Hey AMD, would you please post a picture of your engine cover? I considered covering mine with carpet and I am curious about how it would have looked. I decided to go with the new vinyl cover when I found someone who would make it for $40 plus materials.

Thanks SD, those pictures look great. Was it hinged to the floor in the front? Mine isn't and I was wondering if it normally is. I do have the aluminum strip on the back plate to secure it, like yours.

I'm embarrassed to say that after looking through all the pics I have, none show the doghouse. My interior needs work (mostly original) so I did not take many pictures of it for fear of being ridiculed...lol

If the weather behaves this coming weekend I may tinker with the motor, at which point I will be sure to take a picture for you.

In the meantime, I did find this pic of someone's interior. Looks nice

AMD, The engine cover wasn't hinged. It actually has to slide out a few inches before you can tilt it back, unless you first lift up the large hinged piece with the seat backs attached.

Thanks Tink. I was shooting for a March 22 completion date (phase 1 that is) -- one year from starting this thread. It's going to be tight though, especially since I will be out of town all next week and I won't be picking up my rear seat and bow cushion covers until 3/18. The good news is that it looks like I will certainly not miss another season.

Since 70% of the transom is still solid (yeah all but the bottom, the important part), I will take care of that next winter with NidaBond or Arjay (Phase 2). As small as the transom is on these Rays, it looks like the pourable transoms will only run about $150 more than wood, and will require significantly less grinding. I cringe at the idea of grinding again.

Well, I made a little more progress over the weekend. I picked up the new covers and began installing them. Wow, it is a real PITA to get these things on straight and without wrinkles. Per the woman who made my covers, I wound up adding a small layer of new foam on top of the original foam to get everything a little tighter. She explained that the old foam had compressed a bit after 26 years.

Here are some pics of the engine cover and one bow cushion. It took me a few hours just to get these 2 pieces done. I still need to install the cup holders and teak to the engine cover.

As you can see, I wasn't quite able to get all the wrinkles out of the red stripe on the bow cushion. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to make that look a little better?

Looks great SD. I think once the sun hits that vinyl for a while it may heat up and settle down flat? I see that you had to pull the red stripe quite tight to get it to lay flat.

Where does the teak go on your cover?

Thanks AMD. See the picture below below for where the teak will go. It makes a ledge the seat cushions can sit on to make a nice sun pad. I still have to refinish it before I install it.

I did have to pull the red stripe pretty tight. However, that piece to the left of it is actually about 1/2" taller than the rest of the cushion. Here is a picture of the old piece from the side.

No kiddin.... I didn't know that seat cushion did that. Those wooden pieces were missing on mine.
