Re: 1986 ss 201

Sorry the exhaust is bad and like you said money going the wrong way. All black is going to be sharp. You could have used green like adelpheus did in his Chieftain before he had to get rid of it.

Seeing the new parts in plastic looks like the motor and drive are going back in soon.

Re: 1986 ss 201

Looks great, 'cept having to make the new manifold purchase......

Thanks JB, ya that one hurt, you can see the JB weld still attached in a couple spots

I feel like a big slacker. All I did was wash my Merc down

Yea right Jason a slacker

Nice Glen:)

Are you going to put the shutters back in?
I think I wouldnt, just have to be carefull to not come to a full stop after haulin arse so your wake doesnt came back into the motor

Hey Kev, Ya I was planning on replacing them, they are discontinued from Mercruiser so I bouth a set of Sierra, but they are giving problems with fit, another post coming soon.

GA S$%t happens, I was thinking about doing something along those lines, but then thought the black looks pretty nice when it's all fresh and shinny. I'm still trying to decide if I should put the motor back in now or wait. I have to pull the boat off the trailer to redo it and I'm thinking it would be easier with out the motor in it.

Your all right, would be a dumb move to put the motor back in. Got a tiny bit more done between work and employee problems. Any of you want an easy job driving a truck? $25 and hour to start, 4th best benefit and pension plan in Canada???

Any how enough grumbling. I got the shutter problem worked out. The Sierra ones fit great once you clean out the carbon and rough casting in the Y-pipe. Y-pipe and shutters installed.

And the floor stringers next to the motor mount stringers are back in.

I'm now ready to start on flotation and floor, just have to find the time and money to get the required supplies.

Hey Glen... sorry to hear about your employee issues... hopefully it wasn't the new guy who seemed promissing!

Looking good. Sounds like you'll be going on a road trip soon... gotta watch out though... there might be an MBS encouragement sign on the way egging you on to pick up a "winter" project! :D

Hey Jim, Ya the employee thing sucks, the new guy couldn't pass a D&A test so no go there. Road trip for parts probably not for a while now won't be time, and when the time comes I'm sure the Admiral will put blinders on me and threaten death if I start looking at boat next to the highway.;)

Okay finally things will start to move along. Had to make a run down to Montana for a septic tank and cistern for the BIL, so why not take the opportunity to pick up some boat supplies. 6 sheets of 5/8 cdx, 5, 4X8X2" sheets of foamular, saving over buying local $300.
Savings on Cistern and Septic tank $2600. And the Canadian government wonders why we shop in the USofA. Hoping to get at the 201 in the near future.

What did you do, fill up the septic tank with the boat goodies to skip the duty? LOL It does sound like updates are going to increase to your normal torrid pace.

Off topic - Why do some things cost so much up there? I always thought Canada had a fair amount of manufacturing and there has to be a Canadian septic tank maker, isn't there? And i thought NAFTA was supposed to ease the cross border transport and sale pf goods between Can., Mex. and the US. Maybe I'm naive.

Good question GA, Plywood was made in Canada shipped to the US and I can buy it down there for $17.00 a sheet less. The foam I can't buy up here in the 2" thickness only 1 1/2" the 2 in the US is $31.00 a sheet, the 1 1/2 up here is $46.95. I priced out the septic tanks locally $2600. $1050. state side, cistern $2400 up here $1150 .
All NAFTA has done is do away with the Duty unless it is an offshore import. We still usually have to pay taxes when we come back across but the Canada customs fellow must have been in a real good mood yesterday as he looked at our recipts and said carry on have a nice day, so we even saved the 10% taxes.
It was a great day to visit the USA

Re: 1986 ss 201

Okay guys advice time. I brought the 43 gal Aluminum fuel tank in to clean up and check over. I have not dealt with one of these before, and am not sure when to say they are no good. Because it sat in saturated foam for 10 years there is a little bit of corrosion pitting. I sanded down the worst areas then took a real sharp punch and tried to push through the pits, no go, so I gave the punch a tap with a hammer still no go. Then on the bottom of the tank at the weld seam for the internal baffles there are a couple of spots that looked cracked, but they are not deep and show no signs of ever leaking, they are right in the center of the baffle between the welds, which are internal. What do ya think??

Hi Glen, welcome to iboats!

As you are reading along on the site here you'll notice that many of the vets will post photos in an effort to give the other members the best idea of what's going on. An account with photobucket works great for this!

Not a big deal man, we know you are Canadian so we'll be patient;):D

(Sorry for being such a punk right after breakfast like that:p)

Yah sorry buddy! Not enough coffee in the system today:redface:

I don't think I'd worry too much about the pitting. The cracks though? Hmmmmm.....

Okay, this is my first post and I"m told I have to include photos, I hope this works but HeHeHe

First pic shows the pit I wacked with a punch and hammer.

Some more of the pitting.

The next show what looks like cracks, but they are centered under the baffle between the welds and show no sign of ever leaking.

Re: 1986 ss 201

have you tried sealing it up and using a compressor to fill it to maybe 15 psi to check for leaks? solution of dish deterg brushed onto suspect areas will show up any pinhole leaks with a stream of bubbles.

Re: 1986 ss 201

I do believe if I were in your shoes, I'd prolly swab on some nice, wide slabs of JB weld over all that stuff and run with it.

I know the safety patrol guys will say replace it, which is good advice too.

Eh, scratching head here....

Well, you did a heck of a job posting photos, welcome to iboats!!:D

B2 I will give that a try, but like I said there was no sign of leaks other than the rotten fill hose.

Thanks Jason I'm learning slowly;), I believe I am going to give your suggestion a try clean up the whole tank with the sander, then slather some JB on all the suspicous areas, then pressure test as per B2.
I priced out a replacement and almost had a heart attack, be the better part of $650 once I got it here.
