Re: 1986 ss 201

Time for an update, the thread was next in line to roll over a page, yikes I'm real slow if I let it do that. It took a litte figuring and a whole lot of !@#$ with a heat gun and a flat face body hammer, but I got the trim for around my fore deck storage made.

I got the big girl off the trailer as well, was a fairly big job by myself but worked out real good, should have done this a long time ago instead of climbing up and over the gunwals.

It seemed to take forever, but I have the last of the blue foam in, forming the dams for the spray foam. Just have to take the pieces back out, vacuum out the bits and PL them in place.

You going to spray foam around the fuel filler and vent lines? I did just as a way to prevent chaffing....

Thanks tig, and why is your foam not going to look like this, you paint looks great.

Hey Dj, I am just going to spray up to the foam blocks not onto the actual hoses. That will make them accessable and removable, plus I really didn't like how the water and foam re-acted to rot the hoses. The only spot in the deck water will be able to get through will be around the hoses, so hhe opening between the foam blocks will allow it to drain to the bilge.

Re: 1986 ss 201

Glen, I see that you use doubler wood under seating, to solidify better, Also that you use them to join decking.
What do you use to fasten them?

I was thinking gorilla glue & coutersunk 1 1/4 exterior deck screws OR stainless screws(I have plenty)then fill with wood glue. if I can do this, do you think the marine spar varnish will have a negative reaction to the filler?

Thanks, Mike

Looks great Glen. I like how you left a space between the foam and the floor in the bow... drainage, drainage, drainage! I can only image that the challange of getting that boat off the trailer and onto the ground on your own ... the man!

Boat looks great sitting there --- paint looks terrific.

When do you plan to spray???

Hey Mike thanks, I use 1 1/4 deck screws from the top down with gorrila glue then I grind off what sticks through on the underside. I try to just run the screws in till they are flush then put heavy coats of spar on them to fill. Seems to work well.

Thanks Jim, she actually came off the trailer quite easy just took a little time and patiance. The hardest part was getting it back the first four feet, I used a ratchet strap for that, once I hit the over balance point I just let the winch out slowly and walked the trailer ahead.
I ordered an infrared thermometer off Flea bay, I am just waiting for it to get here so I can get the foam to the right temp, it has to be between 25 and 28c to work the best. we are going away this coming weekend so I am hoping for the following week for spray.

Re: 1986 ss 201

Two weeks and very little to report. Real busy at work 10-14 hr days, Then the pump in my well crapped out, had to jury-rig a cistern up and haul water, so I still have that large project ahead of me. I need two days off in a row to get the foam in the SS, and that is not happening, so I have been working a little on the new engine cover and little bits here and there. I will try to get some photos up this weekend.

Yikes! Things have a weird tendency to fail when you most need them not too!!

Sounds like you're rather busy... Starcrafts are patient.... the mob however... that's another story! :)

Boy isn't that the truth Jim, once the sun comes up I am going to be busy installing 5000 liters worth of tanks in the basment for water storage, there goes the weekend!!

I hope this progress and pics will keep the mob at bay.

Re: 1986 ss 201

So far I have not been happy with the design of the motor covers on Starcraft I/O, the 18 SS has a one piece cover that hinges to the front so it is in the way to work on anything in the engine bay. The 201 had a two piece, but again the top was hinged on the front and would tip the whole thing over when it was open enough to work on any thing.
My new design right or wrong is two piece with the top being hinged on the rear and the bottom section will sit on the floor with locating pins. Should be able to lift the lid and support it on a prop rod to check oils and minor maintainance, for access to the bilge just open the top and remove the lower section for access to everything.

The first two pics are how it sits in the boat, still waiting for the hinges to arrive.

The next ones are how it is constructed.

Re: 1986 ss 201

I wanted the sides of the lower section to have some support at the angle joints so this is how I did it.

It is all constucted out of 5/8 ply except the top, which is 3/4, I used 1/16 aluminum for the rear cover over the small self with the cup holders. I know the cup holders are a little low but I wanted to use up the wasted space in the front of the cover, aleast the coffee cups won't get knocked over.
