Re: HELP! 1991 Bayliner Capri Deck

Thanks guys for all the advice and support! I might have to put the boat on the back burner for a few weeks, but I'm definitely going to restore it one way or another. I just finished reading Runabout Renovation by Jim Anderson. Inspiring Book! Is there another book any of you recommend? Thanks again!

Re: HELP! 1991 Bayliner Capri Deck

Is the foam coming out of the boat the same type that is going back end? To me, it looks similar to the foam that Frisco poured in his videos. I'm not sure though. If it is the same type, it should dry out right as long as the water has somewhere to drain right? If I need to order some, I was going to get it from uscomposities...seems cheaper than aeromarine.

93Bayliner1800: Will I need 2 gallons total or 2 gallons of A and 2 gallons of B?

thanks guys!

Re: HELP! 1991 Bayliner Capri Deck

I ended up using 3 gallons of A and 3 of B. 2lb foam. I used 2 of each just below the deck. The other gallon of each I used under front boxes under dash and read side seat boxes. Honestly ....I could have used more, but it will definitely float my boat, and keep it upright if the worst ever happens.

I believe if new foam had a way to drain it would never absorb it, but once it is in there you have to replace it. I did not put any drain holes etc in my stringers. This boat was built with NO glass on bottom or top of the deck and it lasted 18 years....if I get another 15 I will be very satisfied.

Re: HELP! 1991 Bayliner Capri Deck

I forgot to mention the outboard is a 1998 Force 90 Hp, which runs like a champ. It seems the previous owner did not install the 1998 outboard in the same exact place that the original outboard was in. It is offset a few inches. Is there a particular reason someone would do this?

I am also going to get all the panels and cushions redone.

I'm just going to buy new lounge seats, probably these: http://www.iboats.com/Bayliner-Capr...4944368--session_id.660869775--view_id.675105

What do you think is reasonable price to get those panels and cushions redone?

Your plan is good...just remember that when it comes to plans, they don't always go according to plan...

The most important thing to keep in mind is perseverance...stick-to-it-ivness...keep making progress, even if it seems trivial or minor...sometimes you can do something else on the list, even if it isn't in order...as an example, you may be waiting for supplies to keep glassing, but you may already have the materials needed to do your upholstery...and so on...

I will tomorrow. The boat is currently at my wife's parents' house, since they have more covered space.

Re: HELP! 1991 Bayliner Capri Deck

Looks pretty good. If I had it to do over again like I did this time I removed top cap and removed everything out of hull. My problem was 1. I did not support the hull sides enough and they flexed outward after removing cap. 2. Make sure to level boat to existing deck so you know new stringers bulkheads etc....are level. 3. Everypieceor section of the boat you can remove in one piece...like under helm and seat boxes....would be great to use as a template. Measure everything....EVERYTHING from everywhere. As long as the hull cannot flex during rebuild it would have been so much easier on mine with top cap staying off until final assembly. I was worried about my windshield lining up when I re- installed top cap. When installing stringers....mark lines to make sire they so not move, or build braces to keep them from moving while the are bed/filleted. My opinion I would use PB for almost everything.

This guy gave me some reinforced putty already made in a 5 gallon bucket. I am going to try it tonight and see how it works.

Re: 1991 Bayliner Capri Restore

I just got quite the quote from a guy to redo the upholstery and carpet. He said $2400 upholstery labor + $800 carpet labor + $400 for vinyl + $400 for carpet. That's $4000!!! Really??? No thank you, that seems a little ridiculous to me. Not to mention, he knows the old carpet is already removed and all the upholstery panels are already taken off.

Maybe I can get my wife's grandmother to give me some sewing lessons. Also, I'm probably going to do snap in carpet if any carpet at all.

BTW: I wasn't planning on doing the carpet and upholstery any time soon.

oops, shows just how awake i am at 220. ive never found it hard to get motors off. first disconnect linkages fuel lines and electrical. i use a big heavy duty tow strap around the motor to support the weight, and then another strap to maintain balance so the motor wont rotate or tip upside down. then i use an engine hoist to put some tension in the straps and remove the bolts. it makes it easier if you have the bow down when you first are applying tension and lifting the motor, and then when you have the bolts off and you need to move the motor/get its clamps to clear the top of the transom you can simply raise the bow which will lower the stern. then you can pull the boat away and lower the engine. a pallet or half pallet works great for this. you can buy some caster wheels at harbor freight ridiculously cheap and attach them to a pallet and have a nice simply way to move your motor around which is safer then using the hoist or having people try to lift it.

Thanks! I'm still debating whether my transom actually needs replacing. Should I just drill holes to inspect or take the motor off to get a better view? I didn't know I could just lay the motor down on its' side.

Would there be any benefit to putting it on a motor stand like the one below as opposed to laying it on a pallet with wheels?

Re: 1991 Bayliner Capri Restore

I didn't have a stand handy so I laid it down, but a stand is a great thing to use. I would just plan to replace the transom and stringers. The oem glass work is so poor that if the floor has rot then the stringers probably have rot, and if the stringers have rot then the transom will. I like bayliners for what they are and love my capri for the lines but the glass work was poor and no glass to seal wood from other wood, so one rotting area would lead to everything rotting. If you're going into it to do this kind of work, then have the piece of mind and do it all. That's how I feel

Re: 1991 Bayliner Capri Restore

I went ahead and built a motor stand. The motor says it weighs 285. Do you think I built the stand strong enough? I used pt 2x6's, stainless #10 2-1/2 screws, and liquid nails heavy duty construction adhesive.

Edit also a square scrap piece of pt wood at the bottom.

I'm obviously not a skilled carpenter....

I don't see any major issues w it. Good job. When you pulling the motor off?
