Boss,

I think if you wiped the surface down with wax/grease remover solvent, scuffed up the surface with scotch brite pad, it wouldn't hurt, and then in your mind you'll be certain of a good bond between coats. Maybe post this as a separate thread, the fiberglass gods will answer!

Re: 1995 Monterey 210 Deck/Stringer Restore

Now THIS is what I'm talking about! Man, I am so much happier today than I was yesterday. Having never done any of this before its all a learning process I suppose.

I think yesterday, I was laying it down more like I would paint...What I mean is that I would roll it out and would go back over it to try and fill it in..just didn't work. I ended up with thin spots and the coat really wasn't very thick.

So today I spent about 3hrs going over the surface with 220 grit and a TSP to get the surface ready for another coat. It some spots it was so thin that I could easily sand through the gel coat..not good.

I also wanted the color to be darker as well, so I added some tint and it came out MUCH better today. Man, this morning when I went outside I need sunglasses, instantly:eek:

This time I really loaded up the roller, and made one thick pass at a time, never going back over it. And it rolled out so much better. I ran out of MEKP and have about 20oz of Gel Left and have a few spots I couldn't get to, so I'll touch that up tomorrow.but over all, aside from the stupid gnats that liked to land in the wet Gel, I'm pickled tink!:p

I really need to give a big thanks to all the folks that help me out around here.
EZ, HopeSheFloats, Ondarvr, Ooops, Bear, System-F, Skibum, Friscoboater, LouC, Drewpster, Bond-O, Mick110 and so many others that I grabbed advice from for this project..thanks so much!

Re: 1995 Monterey 210 Deck/Stringer Restore

Thanks Lou...for convincing me not to glue in carpet again! If water leaks through this deck, I give up!

How long did you stay off the gel coat before securing your seats back in? Also I'm going to need to screw down the battery tray, trim motor and the back to back seats. Any precautions I need to take in order to tap through the gel coat? I plan on pilot holes filled with a 3m 4200, but I don't want the gel to crack doing something stupid.
Thanks

Thanks Bob, really happy I went with the gel coat. I think it will hold up for many years.

Are you leaning that way too with yours?

MTribe08,
I'm looking at several options. Still trying to make up my mind. I like the Idea of gel coat with snap in carpet. I still have awhile till I'm at that point but thinking ahead a little. I even like the idea of vinyl on the deck to. We will see.
Thanks
Bob

Re: 1995 Monterey 210 Deck/Stringer Restore

I think I waited a week or so before putting the seats back in...when drilling make REALLY sure you are drilling at the right depth and with gelcoat you can run the drill in reverse first to make a chamfer for the bit to run in so as not to chip the gelcoat...go slow...low speed. After drilling your hole...it's a good idea to inject some thinned epoxy like CPES (www.rotdoc.com then when you put in the screws to fasten things...use 3M4200 and don't put the screw all the way in at first...go about 3/4 of the way in...let the sealer set up...then after it sets up screw it in the rest of the way. What I did to make my rear seats (full width benches) easily removable was to use threaded inserts in the deck...so that every time I remove them (usually once a year for my winterization/major service)...I am not unscrewing a wood screw from the deck....but removing a machine screw from the insert that is threaded into the deck permenantly....

Ok, sounds good..I figured I'd wait at least a few days to let the Gel-Coat set up and fully cure, before I did much.

Those inserts sound like a really good idea..I'll bet either lowes or HD sells something like that. I like that alot because you can seal the insert with CPES and 4200 and never have to take it out. I'll have 4 screws that will hold the back to back pedestal down, and then the snaps for the carpet. But I'll epoxy the snaps in place to seal the hole.

Thanks for the tip!

David,

That looks like it came from the factory - just fantastic!

You've got me thinking of abandoning the spray gun and going with a roller.

Almost there!

WOW!!!! I love the way that came out. Gel coat is two part right? if so it should cure alot quicker than my duraback did. It would be a good idea to give it at least three days.

I too was thinking about the snap in carpet but I think that may be a problem. Where the carpet attaches you have to screw into the deck. That would be a point where water could get in. So I am not sure what I am going to do now.

I am just amazed you were able to do all this without removing the engine.

So killer dude!

If you put 4200 in the holes drilled for the carpet snaps, or epoxy, you should be fine... I had no issues on my deck, plus they do it from the factory this way... I also was tripping about drilling holes in my deck for the snaps, but it all worked out fine.

What carpet are you going with?

I'm telling you..unless you are really comfortable with a spray gun(which I am not) and you want to spend the extra time thinning it out and what not, I couldn't be happier with what I have.

When the time comes to do it, if you need any help whatsoever I can walk you through the tools I used and what to avoid. Also, if you would like information on the Gel Coat, I was at the shop this morning and they said they have customers all over the world using their product. For my deck I was able to cover to the whole thing with a heavy coat and used half a gallon.

I ended up going back over my first coat after I really sanded it down because my first coat I didn't do right, and I still have about 20 oz left of the 128 or so I started with. Enough to touch up some spots and do some areas on the side I didn't get to.

Ok, will do. Yes that was a 2 part Vinylester Gel-Coat tinted to match my original Gel-Coat. I think it came out pretty close.

Yep, that is an issue..but I plan on pre drilling each hole..dropping in CPES to soak into the wood..and then using a 2 part expoxy or 4200 to make it water tight. Should be good to go.

Yes, that is the plan..I have some of that 2 part epoxy that you get at home depot...like the 5 minute stuff..will that work? I should I go with 4200 over that?

I hear ya about drilling into the deck..I'm avoiding it is best I can..so far I'v elimiated the captains chair, battery tray and Trim motor...I'm thinking of using threaded inserts for the back to back pedestal, suggested by LouC..that way, I can seal the insert and if I ever need to pull out the pedestal, I'm not taking the screw out of raw wood.

I have a good friend that owns a "nuts and bolts, fastners" type outfit..he's got everything under the sun..so I've contacted him to see if he can get me some. We'll see.

What carpet are you going with?

Shhhh..its a surprise :D:p
