Okay... I am back... so... I ripped out the splashwell this evening... somewhere I read that "its only 4 rivets" after 4 hours and 24 rivets later I was successful... Way to much stress... there is no doubt, at my age... that I am not equipted to deal with such things... But it is out and there were no deaths... except for a few Guinness... I have 11 photo's but have had no luck with photobucket... Looking at the underside of the splashwell I am seeing that this thing can be rerpaired by a novice like me... I have been waiting for my tin knocker to get back with me but as of today no word... I would like to drag this boat to him and have this problem solved for a reasonable price... I have mauled Amazon and am ready to bring the trailor into the 21st

Here is a photo of the removed splashwell... on each edge there is 4 and 5 rivets attaching it to the lower lip of the gunwale

in this photo you can see 15 holes that were attached to either the gunwale or a bracket that was attached to the gunwale

here you can see the ghost of one of the four brackets... I believe not original equiptment

Here is the port side... I did not remove two of the brackets on the port side but was forced to remove all four from the gunwale and splashwell on the starboard side so that the splashwell could be moved forward and dropped down for removal

here is the starboard side... every hole you see here with one exception(lower left) was riveted to some sort of bracket

here is the port side... eight rivets attached to some sort of bracket...

here you can see the underside of the splashwell... note the 4 and 5 holes on the outer sides, this is where the splashwell flange was riveted to the underside of the gunwale... also note that from this view this splashwell looks to be in good repairable shape... as opposed to this topside veiw. the grey that you see here is the liquid steel hidding the cracked aluminum..

There is no doubt that this splashwell should be removed as soon as possible during demolition... I believe that I am the millionth person to express this once it has been done... for those contemplating... just get it done... you will have a much better platform to work with... note one of the two port side splashwell brackets...

Standard mounting should consist of the rivets through the underside of the gunnels, screws all along the lip to connect to the transom, and an angled brace/tab on each side where the splashwell intersects with the inside of each gunnel. My tabs were pretty well shot, so I plan to rivet in some aluminum angle to tie it into the sides of the gunnels.

Yep, like MNhunter my tabs were cracked, as well as the corners where the aft horizontal part meets the bulkhead of the well. I drilled the crack ends and jb welded some flat AL stock underneath the weak spots/cracks. It's held up so far.

That's the original 1972 splashwell, stripped of multiple layers of paint with a chemical aircraft stripper, a few small dents pounded out with a rubber mallet, sanded with 220, etched with a 50/50 water/vinegar solution, rinsed, and topped with a couple coats of Duralux Aluminum Boat Paint via a foam roller. Will be installed with all new aluminum blind rivets and stainless screws, new cable boot/gasket, and original trim pieces. I've got an 8ft section of 1/4" thick 1x2 aluminum angle that I'll use to fabricate the brace/tie-in to the side of the gunnels and hopefully add a little extra support across the span somehow.

I was at lowes again yesterday(I should buy Lowes stock) They have a great selection of aluminum, flat stock, angle, square, and other configurations... I am going to run a piece of square stock from gunwale to gunwale attaching it to the splashwell/gunwale braces... I intend to mount two Down East rod holders to the rear of the slashwell, and run the bolts through the square stock... I fish near Amnityville here in Maine and you never know, I could hook into the "Son of JAWS" ... Also the boat floor gods were looking upon me yesterday, I ran into an old golfing partner and he said he has a plazma cutter and would be happy to make some cuts for me in my 1/4 inch diamond plate, no charge... this is a real load off my mind... this time it really paid off to be patient...

As you can see in this photo I need to repair my transom brace... any and all transom brace repair photo's and or repair ideas would be very much appreciated

Many of us have had to repair our knee braces, most of us rivet or bolt or both, aluminum angle to the knee brace and bolt through the transom.
