Re: 77 Starcraft Holiday 18 i/o - rebuild with pics galore

Back from holidays and onto my second job which is the boat. I picked up a cheap 29.99 paint gun on sale and painted the fenders with Whitecote. When this stuff cures its as hard as a rock. I don't think I could even scratch it much less chip it so it should really last.

I'll have the new fenders, hangars and leafs on this weekend for sure. I'll post some pics when I'm bolting it back together. I need to start catching up to you dudes.

Trailer is looking great that whitecote sure sounds like the ultimate trailer painting product looking like new or better.

Here's the fenders and axle bolted on. It's not the final paint job on these parts as they'll get done again on the trailer when I do the whole thing. The fenders look a bit high so they may have to get rewelded at some point into the final position.

And more. The bolts on the leafs and shackles are now twice the thickness they were before. All part of the leaf spring mounting kit from Princess Auto...Harbour Freight sounds like the US equivalent.

So, is the boat finished and you have no way to get it to the water??? I can't remember...:p

Seems like forever since we've seen a pic of the boat.....

I don't think the fenders look particularly high. I wouldn't mess with 'em.

It'll float :) I want to get my shifter in and I will temporarily bolt the gas tank in so I can get it out on the water at least once.

My problem was not knowing the exact condition of the trailer. At least now if I take it out the trailer is solid so the boat won't end up in the trees at 80. :)

Cool man. Thanks for the second set of eyes. I will just leave them as is.

I have seen boats with mud flaps so to speak bolted inside the fenders to extend the covered area down.

I bolted some of the pieces back on the trailer so I can tow it away for sand blasting. Hopefully this weekend I can start. I dig these older trailers as the gauge and the quality of the metal used is something you don't see anymore.

I'll also be wiring in a 4 pole trailer connector so I can easily disconnect the swing away tongue extension for painting without cutting or pulling any wires.

PS. I know I have to start rotating my pics. My neck is gimped now.

Good progress I think Sprinter, but it's hard to tell with my head at 270 degrees (we're upside down here!). Should be on the water any day... nice! :D

I agree with Ez that the fenders look fine - and with you, some rubber mud flaps will stop any grit/gravel peppering your stern chines.

Laughable progress again. I wired in and shrink wrapped the 4 pole connector in the tongue extension and added in the bow roller. Man does the Stoltz roller glow in the dark...relatively speaking. The old ones weren't very noticeable in black.

With any luck the boat will be up on tires tomorrow and I can get to sandblasting.

Yah those Stoltz do glow a bit eh. Well, when I priced em out I was pretty sure they were made of gold so they should glow a little for ya sprint;)

I had a bit better day today. The boat is up on tires and the trailer is partially torn down. Maybe a half hour or so to pickup the stern and put it on tires then slowly pull away up to a point. Lift the nose pull the trailer out and place some tires under and done. It's quite stable.

We put a tire on the bottom of the stack so that the stack would not deform as much.

Tore some of the trailer down. Tomorrow is tearing down the rest and my first crack at sandblasting.

One of the pics shows the partial tilt trailer feature :)

Re: 77 Starcraft Holiday 18 i/o - rebuild with pics galore

Man... The right tool for the job makes a huge difference. I finally used my 5 gal sandblaster and got some of the paint stripped. 5 minutes with this thing would be a half hour with a grinder.

I used black ebony (copper slag) for the abrasive and have some sil4 sand that isn't creating any dust as well.

Hsre's the setup of what I'm using and a table full of parts pulled off the trailer.

I only had a bit of time to mess with it after pulling the parts but it makes short work of the stripping. The sandblasting unit was like $50 but I'm sure you can catch it on sale at harbor freight or princess auto in Canada for $30 when they are on sale. I bought mine from a guy in a kijji ad and this this was new in the box.

Here's a few more pics. Tomorrow is sandblasting day so I'm sure I will get that trailer done tomorrow or at least very close.

It's a welfare setup but it works and I don't mind waiting for the pressure to build up before I use it. You might get a minute of blasting and a 30 second wait for pressure to build up but it is doing the job 'cause in that minute I can get quite a few linear feet done.

Re: 77 Starcraft Holiday 18 i/o - rebuild with pics galore

My ceramic nozzle is shot so enough sandblasting for today. I also picked up a wire wheel cup by Milwaukee and it's way better than my old no name one.

Just a bit more blasting/grinding the and the trailer will be officially stripped.

PS It's about a tie with the sandblaster and the wire wheel. When the blaster is working perfectly then all is good but there is a ton of stopping and starting as the compressor and/or tank is too small. I'm always having to stop to build up pressure.
