Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Thanks oops!, I was gad I had the gloves on too. As You may have seen in the picture, I have had worse digit accidents than this one.

I will take your advice and rip out the balsa core.

The fore part of the balso seems to be in mucher better state than the central, rearward parts. Any issue with leaving that front part in place? Would I need to build up the CSM/1708 to same height?

Once I get the motor out I will be close to time for the ruff/scuff. Should I wait till I am ready to start glassing before the ruff/scuff?

no. height requirements are not part of the deal on a hull..just glass over the spot you pull the core from to stiffen the area. you can leave the good stuff.

once the motor is out....and everything you want out of the boat is gone......vacume it.....then start the rough and scuff.....take the top layer of resin off the glass and scuff down to the glass....this happens very quickly with a 24 grit disc. so no need to go too deep.

just scuff the area you want to glass to....

after the scuff......vaccume......then clean with acetone about 3 times....then you are good to glass.

if you leave the boat after vacuming......and come back the next day.....then use the acetone.....the acetone should be flashing off of the substraight when you are mixing the resin.
some people wipe the hull after the acetone clean with styrene.....this is just to soften the old glass.....but dont worry about it if you dont have any.....a good wash with acetone will do almost the same thing.

you are almost there bud.

oh.....about the front deck. imho.....if it aint broke....dont fix it !.....unless there was serious water intrusion in the front, and you find wet or rot...why do it?

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

OK today I found that HF dsoes sell High Speed Steel attachments for the oscillating tool. I bought a couple and also got a diamond grit attachment. The diamond tooll does work, but very slow. Turns out the HSS attachments work rather well. I was able to get the majority of the highspots from the deck/stringer attachment areas. I worked on the balsa core areas. I still need to pull the fiberglass out, I got rather large sections and did not have enough strength to get them out. I wish I had read oop!' last post closer. I was grinding the stringer area to get it down to the same level as the surrounding glass and decided to see how the rough and scuff would go. I am using a 24 grit 4.5 inch grinder. It does go rather quick, but mercy what a mess! I will need to upgrade my shopvac, the one I am using has a small diameter hose and is getting clogged with small pieces of foam, glass and wood.

My next order of business will be finding a way to get the motor out.

Here is the area I hit with the rough and scuff. Is this deep enough? I was taking it down till all the foam remnants were gone.

Here is an area I did not hit for comparison.

yeah.....what you want to do is remove any top resin, and just expose some glass.......the top resin is contanimated, and also a brittle barrier for the next new layer.....so you just want to lightly take it off. you want to expose a few strands of glass so you get a good bond for the new layer.

but looks good !

A quick and inexpensive way to pull the motor is to call a Tow Truck. If you have the motor stand all prepped and ready they can come out and lift the motor and set it on your stand in less than 30 minutes and the charge is minimal.

I will be waiting till i get the motor out before doing anymore of the rough and scuff. Need to get the motor mounts and remaining stringer parts out.

I agree.Way easier than trying to kill yourself and the boat with an engine hoist designed for autos.Another way is a wooden homebuilt gantry with a come along and chain. There's a few wood hoist on here to look over.

Not a bad idea. Will see if i can find some plans. Building this would not be a problem, but i would like to know i put it together strong enough to hold the motor without cracking. I would think that using two 2x6's would be plenty strong enough to hold it.

Yep, if you Glue and Screw em together you'll have No Problems lifting that motor. 4 10" 2x4's and 2 2x6's and you'd be good to go.

I did mine with 2x6s and 4x4s.It was just over 8 foot tall.I used doubled 2x6 across the top with 2x6 bracing the top and bracing the upright legs to the foot or ground runner.I used zinc plated bolts, washers, and nuts.I think all the hardware was 3/8ths or 1/2 inch.I wish I still had it, but I kept it out side, and code enforcement said no.So I disassembled it and used the parts for other projects.

Oh,I lifted a big block ford 390 out of my lifted truck, with a top loader 4 speed and transfer case still attached.

I shouldn't have an issue with a 350 smallblock then.

Trooper82,

Just find your thread today. You have a really nice looking boat.

I have to give it to you. You are making great progress.

With OOPS and WOODONGLASS you can't go wrong and with all the other great guys here on i-boats.

Man you are really moving along. You are miles ahead of me.
I was doing some research on removing the blown on fiberglass which is over the plywood deck.

So that HF oscillating tool really does the trick huh.?

I am building a framework to remove the motor from my Glasply.

Pretty simple design. You should have no problems at all.

Hey ya bh thanks for the support. That tool worked great for me. Just make sure you grab a HSS cutter to go with it. The bimetal or high carbon blades that come with it didnt last long at all.

I used a combination of a circular saw, reciprocating saw and the oscillation tool. Then will be finishimg up with 24 grit paper wheel. The OT did not make too much dust, so i figured to use it to get as close as i could to the finish line to keep dust down as long as possible. The boat is covered in dust right now from the little bit of sanding i did yesterday. The circular saw made it easy to get to right depth on the deck. The RS i used for areas i did not need to worry about depth. On the CS make sure you just barely go past the thickness of the dech and fiberglass covering. I had one place that the hull was raised up hfher than the rest so i ended up scoring it. It was right where i will be putting oops!'s patent pending PB so not to worried about it.

I am sure you will be making quick progress with your project in no time.

Thanks Dustin. I can only hope it goes as easy as it has in my mind rehearsals.
